I might as well jump in on this name change thing. Hang on while I decide between tgb1949_marantz, naedhawk, or rrrnorton.

I'll always answer to Ironrod. I'm not running from my past, just updating to a more recent secret identity.Lee wrote:I don't like this name change thing. Its like ATB on Gaming Trend, you can change your name, but you will always be ATB.

Are you saying that's what I was trying to do? Because I explained my reasons in the initial post and they had nothing to do with that.Lee wrote:You build a reputation on your name and while you can't erase that reputation to most of us with a name change, you should have to stick with it.

Re: Name Change
I just put in a request to change my handle from my real name to "Holman," which is a family name I like and have used elsewhere.
Using my real name inhibits me from being a part of some of the better horse-fucking discussions around here. And I hope to be on the job market again in a year or so.
Am I right in thinking that my posting history will follow me? I've put a note in my sig for people wondering if I'm me.

Yup, only your identity changes. It's sort of like a witless protection program.Paul Roberts wrote: Am I right in thinking that my posting history will follow me? I've put a note in my sig for people wondering if I'm me.
IIRC I hit some minor snag with logging in after my identity transplant.

Huh. Odin has had some login trouble, and is also a name-changer, but Bad Demographic hasn't changed names and has also had login problems.Kraken wrote:IIRC I hit some minor snag with logging in after my identity transplant.
wot?
To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?
Unless one loses a precious thing, he will never know its true value. A little light finally scratches the darkness; it lets the exhausted one face his shattered dream and realize his path cannot be walked. Can man live happily without embracing his wounded heart?

Re: Name Change
Mine wasn't a chronic problem but a one-time recognition thing. My username and password didn't match anymore and I think there were some shenanigans with my email address/username as well. Whatever the particulars I solved it and haven't had any subsequent trouble. The Meal wrote:Nor have I (changed names) and yet I also have (the lost auto-login issue).silverjon wrote:Huh. Note that you won't be completely off-the-grid. You may change your user name, which will change with all your old posts, but when folks quote your posts, your older username will stay with the quoted text. It'd take a pretty dense potential employer to not put two-and-two together in that case.Kraken wrote:Yup, only your identity changes. Yeah, but when there's a Wikipedia disambiguation page, it gets a little easier to hide in the weeds.

Yeah, so I'm not really sure what happened here, but it appears that I just deleted Paul's account. I feel like a complete idiot.
Paul, feel free to re-register, and I'll see if there's anything we can do about your old account.
I'm really, really sorry!

My login trouble was short-lived and occurred weeks (months?) after my name-change. I don't think there's a correlation.silverjon wrote:Huh. Dont worry we can fix it for you. I'm swamped (on my iPad at the moment, don't have key pass handy), but worst case by the end of the weekend all previous posts and post count will be associated to this account. Just need an hour or so to babysit SQL.Holman wrote:This is the last time I cross the Overlords, I swear! [sobs]

I'd like to risk the deletion. I put in my request to get my username changed to just "hog". The Hogenator was funny once (ok fine, it wasn't even funny once) but most places I go by hog.
