NSFW pictures

Post by pr0ner »

Given the dustup in the random NSFW thread in EBG, perhaps we need to revisit what is and isn't allowable when it comes to risqué pictures. I always thought the rule was no actual nudity (no fully exposed breasts, no genitals), and no nudity in spoiler tags since the pictures still download, but links were okay. Apparently, some people thing there have been topless pics here or that they're okay.

I have no issues with nudity and porn in general. But I've always counted on OO as a place where that is not really allowed. What's the official word?

I believe the CoC says no nipples with the exception of Elisha Cuthbert or Scarlett Johansson.

I have no official capacity.

Your recollection of what was acceptable is accurate for OO, as I recall. On GG, folks were not allowed to link to actual nudity.

My opinion, as long as threads are appropriately titled, I'm fine with actual nudity, links to nudity, etc. Not fine with child pornography or sex acts (apparently consentual or otherwise).

I'm also not fine with folks bullying others who make threads, appropriately titled, they find objectionable. If threads are within the rules and you don't like it, either ignore the issue or appeal to authorities to make a change in rules. Bullying sucks.

Well put. That certainly seems reasonable to me.

When OO started, we had free hosting through Rip, whom, as I recall, had some fairly strict limitations due to a combination of conservative (paying) customers and some funny laws where he operated his hosting business.

Once we moved out on our own, we relaxed those rules a bit. Light nudity has been fine, as long as it wasn't porn. T&A has been allowed. Genitals have been given a no-no.

Without making an official statement, I'd like to remind everyone that courtesy also plays a factor. Posting NSFW images in threads not labled "NSFW" is simply not nice. Pushign the limits in NSFW tagged threads is not nice either.

That photo you "discovered" of some nude/semi-nude/porning woman that you think is so amazingly hot? I can find a better one in about 10 seconds with Google image search. Anyone can. It's the internets. If I'm looking for "inspiration", I'll go looking for an NSFW tagged thread.

I think an official statement may be warranted if there is confusion. It goes without saying that anything objectionable should be tagged as NSFW. That's just common courtesy.

As to the content of that thread, as someone said, I thought T&A are ok, but all non-Brian groin area shots were not allowed.

I would agree, it may be time to re-visit the CoC. I hate to police grown, intelligent adults, but there is confusion that could potentially be avoided by a clearly written policy.

You may want to re-think your policy on that now that ChaosRaven has created his Hepcats World of Dongs thread. If someone posts actual dongs, the argument will be that it was appropriately titled.

As I mentioned in the thread in question, I favor a community that makes all feel welcome. I can accept that my idea of appropriate content may be different from that of the majority, but it would be a shame if our content kept a stellar person from signing up or contributing regularly. If you're after general titillation there's a whole wide internet right out the front door; I don't see the need to bring it inside.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

I'm not phased by porn but I don't frequent this forum for porn either (anyone who is would be quite disappointed).

Then again, who decided that you can see the whole breast as long as the nipple is covered? I mean at that point might as well show the goods !

But, I don't come here for porn, my net isn't regulated but I'm sure it is for some people and the community is what makes this place great so if we need to cut boobs, I'm more than happy to accept that.

My preference (FWIW) is that NSFW pictures of any kind result in a NSFW tag on the thread title. Nipples result in spoiler tags, anything more than nipples should be an actual link, no linking to sex acts or anything illegal, and as a courtesy you should explain what you're linking.

I think for the most part we do a pretty good job of policing ourselves and acting like mature adults here. I don't think allowing NSFW will result in people suddenly throwing porn around anymore than I believed that legalizing pot here in CO would make everyone become stoners.

Good point, but again, the question becomes, would someone that would be sensitive, offended or insulted by something like nudity, be clicking on spoilered links in a NSFW thread? You would have to actively seek that out here, not just casually browsing checking out the forums (IMO).
Granted, but I still find a considerable distinction between "OO allows erotic photos without exposed genitalia as long as they're tagged NSFW", and "OO allows hardcore porn as long as it's tagged NSFW". (I of course don't expect hardcore porn is on the table, but for the sake of argument....) I might make a decision not to frequent a forum over such a distinction, regardless of whether I had the option to wholly avoid such content.

Now that's a serious discussion I'd like to have since I live in that world. Does that need it's own thread or ?
That is indeed a larger discussion, but the fact is, I love you man regardless of how our opinions diverge. What I know is that pornography is definitely detrimental to how I view, treat, and think of others and myself. Doesn't mean I think sex is evil though, or that I don't slip up and fail to meet my own standards.

Out of curiosity, why? I mean, what exactly about that would make you uncomfortable? Knowing that you're a mere click away from nudity, or that your OO brothers and sisters are in there, salivating and porning up the place?
I was speaking more from the position that maybe it would make my wife less willing to contribute here, or other women (or men) in general. It's the internet, I realize we're a mere click away from nudity at all times. :D

I'm also for restricting it if it results in people getting in trouble at work, or making it so that OO is blocked for them.

I'm decidedly not in favor of restricting it on the grounds of "boobies!" though. One of the things I treasure most about this place is it's decently high percentage of open-minded, mature adults, and I think for the most part, even the discussion found in some of the NSFW-specific threads (like the round robin, for instance) reflects that maturity (iirc, MOST of the discussion in that NSFW round robin thread revolved around our different ideas about physical beauty - at least that was the most interesting discussion in that thread, IMO).

I agree with MHS and Carpet, I think that as a community we are mature enough to know what's OK and what's not and also that people who can get "banned" at work should avoid thread with NSFW in them.

I realize the off-topic has even gotten off-topic. Such is the nature of discussion, particularly the ones I seem to find myself in. I guess what I was initially responding to was the question of whether NSFW content made anyone uncomfortable. The very definition of NSFW is of course vague, but in general, the sharing of erotic content for the sake of titillation does make me uncomfortable, and the broadening of what we allow would likewise broaden my discomfort.

But I want to make it clear I don't expect everyone to hold my views. Neither am I prude. Sometimes a nipple is just a nipple, and not the wholesale descent of mankind into barbarism.

Nudity in itself is a beautiful thing... well the female body anyways, I don't view it as something to satisfy a basic instinct of sex but more of an appreciation of one of the greatest thing nature gave us :)

Porn is a different thing entirely.

Yeah, I do agree there's a distinction. But there's also a blurred boundary between the two. Like I said at one point, it's our attitudes and responses that are significant. If someone's salivating over and making lewd comments about what they'd like to do to the subject of a Renoir, it makes me just as uncomfortable as if it were hardcore porn being discussed.

According to what has been said here I believe i have never broken any rules and i actually lean to the tastier side of the rules. I consider a lot of my postings to be art.

And i know exactly who is talked about when its mentioned they should ignore the threads instead of simply being negative or bullying..even i na semi funny but not funny way.

I shall continue on and support my latest thread. Enjoy.

I bear you no malice, Daehawk. While I may have mocked or stated my discomfort with the NSFW threads at times, it's not my place to judge or belittle anyone here. It's your community as much as it is mine, and if the spirit of the rules are being followed you may of course post as you wish. I hope none of what I've said has felt like an attack on you, as that certainly was not my intention.

Hence I haven't clicked that thread and never will.

As to the topic at hand, I'm sympathetic to both points of view. There are a million other websites with every degree of nudity and sex, so it seems unnecessary to bring those into OO except inasmuch as they might occasionally relate to a wider discussion. I also wish that we had more female members and cheesecake threads can be off-putting to many of them.

OTOH we all know what NSFW means and we all have the freedom to click or not click on those threads. The only kind of censorship I support is self-censorship.

So if it came down to a vote I'd abstain. :snooty:

"Boy's club" might be a suitable metaphor. It's no strip club or sex club, but it's still not somewhere I'd take my wife without discomfort. You can argue that the pin-up posters are behind curtains, but it still might make some people uncomfortable we're a club with them on the walls. Shrugging and saying that the club is OK with you putting up beefcake posters if that's more your bag doesn't necessarily change that.

But I accept that not everyone feels the same, and that I can entirely bypass the rooms with the posters on the walls. And some of the other rooms are fantastic. And even the people who love the pin-up rooms are great people I enjoy interacting with.

Well sure, with all the Star Wars and zombies and fast-food threads it's certainly a boy's club. Every time I see the word "boobies" it seems like a 12-year-old boy's club.

I'm perfectly happy to co-exist with tasteful light nudity on the forum as long as it's labeled NSFW and it doesn't become too prominent. The latter does matter: this hasn't been the kind of place where nude pics are a major preoccupation, and I think the tone would suffer if it were.

Edit to add: My objection is to objectification and the crudity that comes with it, not to skin itself. I think we know it when we see it.

Well, when poorly cropped blowjob pictures start appearing, even in spoilers, that's when the objectification and crudity (and density, in the case of the poster who put it here) really rears its head.

I find this all very confusing. I don't post much anymore so I don't find my own opinion particularly compelling - but a big part of why I don't post much anymore is because the DoD has determined that OO has offensive content that I am not allowed to see at work.

I have no problem with nudity or what have you, but I don't see any value at all in having it here. Clearly Daehawk enjoys yoga pants. Why does he feel the need to post 87 picture of women in yoga pants? He's already seen them. He can see them any time he wants. What is the added value of posting them?

The internet can produce a nearly limitless supply of anything you'd like to see inside of a heartbeat. Why does it need to be here?

Well he's slowly drifting out of range
