I think I've got a good enough grasp to try one of the actual missions. Wish me luck.
Keep a copy of this Mage Knight Player Aid handy and you should be good to go (although this playmat is also mighty handy to keep organised).

Good luck!

Played 1846 in preparation for the later same day play of 1830. A good time was had by all and I even won '46!

Some more Mansions of Madness (tried some of the DLC) and a lot of Cthulhu Death May Die on Saturday (3 plays 1 win). Sunday, different group was over and after a quick sessions of 10 candles (a pretty cool horror RPG), we played some 7 Wonders and some Fire Rescue. I eventually want to find a 7 Wonders replacement, but it's a quick and easy option when we have more than 4 people over.

My wife and I played Village, which is about becoming the most prestigious family in your village through trade, travel, prayer, and, uh, dying. It's one of my favorite euro games -- meaty enough to require some brain-burning choices, but not analysis paralysis. The theme is light as a feather, except for the part where your older family members regularly croak.

I lost by a sizable margin. I tried to end the game quickly by sending my family members to early graves. But I didn't replace them quickly enough, so I had to spend several turns without enough able-bodied family members to get any work done.

I really love Village, but I haven't played it for years. I need to change that.

Village again last night. One of the players focused incredibly heavily on the church, and ended up with 8 family members in the clergy at end-game scoring. If you haven't played Village, this is an enormous amount, since you can only have a maximum of 11 family members in the entire game. He didn't win, but he came awfully close.

Anecdote about Village: one of my gaming buddies is terribly color blind. He was having a terrible, terrible time telling the difference between the orange and the brown cubes. So, I committed the cardinal sin of defacing my game and put a dot with a sharpie on all of the brown cubes.

We have a colorblind player in our regular group and we've run into the same thing many times. We used to have to put dots on certain pawns in Pandemic. He actually posted on BGG to the developers of Frosthaven about it, because there are cards in Gloomhaven where he can't tell the positioning hex on the red/gray diagrams. They responded that they were looking at options, so hopefully that will be corrected and a little symbol put in the target hex or something.

Guy went and played Photon (fancy laser tag type set up in an arena) with us once. The helmets are red and green. He just shot everyone because it was all gray to him.

Played first game of Airborne In Your Pocket. So, this game won't fit in your pocket. That observation aside, it was a quick fun game. We played the first game using the base rules and we walked out with no real challenges. Played the second game with some of the advanced rules, including a specialist and using secondary objectives, and got wiped out. My secondary objective was on my very last outdoor tile, and then I had a huge path to head back to the bunker. Even using a trenching shovel, shortening my path considerably, I only had a few event cards to find the gun emplacement, blow it up, and get back to the safe zone. But the event cards took care of my ticking clock problem, because everyone one we turned over had 4-5 opponents that we had to take out, and we had found no good weapons. We were gunned down like dogs in the second room of the bunker.

Quite fun game, lots of random chance to success (or failure), lots of variations with the different specialists, bunker commanders, secondary objectives, scenarios and alternate rule cards. Quick to play, a game should only take you about 20-30 minutes to complete. Next up is combining it with D-Day Dice.

Why do I suck so badly at games? Took me 5 tries just to get through the tutorial campaign in Descent. And even that required some significant house rules tweaking to get through.

I need to quit buying games, as I'm simply terrible at them. :?

That actually makes me feel a bit better, tbh. I thought I was just so terrible that I couldn't beat the "training wheels" campaign.

I did read quite a few opinions that playing solo while controlling two players is actually much more difficult than playing with 3 or 4 players. The basic lack of skills and abilities available makes things much harder. The sweet spot is apparently 4 PC's...not sure I could handle controlling that many.

Did some non-solo gaming for the first time in months and managed to play through a round of Conan and then a 3-way free for all of Combo Fighter. Enjoyed both tremendously.

I liked it - the mechanics are unlike anything else I can think of. Has a very RPG feel to it because of the amount of choice you potentially have each round - ultimately only limited by your energy levels. The "river" system that the enemy uses felt a bit more reasonable as well in comparison to how other PvP games I've played always seemed to turn out (Descent 2 comes to mind). The way it balances the overlord's ability to activate enemies and gives the players half a chance of guessing enemy activity based on energy levels, position on the track, etc...

It uses the same engine as the Monolith Batman game.

I probably should have said "that I've played". I own the Batman Monolith game, but it sits untouched. I got it with the hopes that they'd tweak it for solo, but I also really like the minis. Now that I've played Conan I really do hope they can figure it out because otherwise the game will sit untouched. My group is apathetic over superhero themed games. Doubly so for official superhero themed games.

After their Beyond the Monolith Kickstarter (which was focused on competitive play) bombed, and their Conan the Conqueror Kickstarter (which was all about cooperative/solo play) went way beyond their expectations, there is some hope and chatter that if they do a Season 3 of Batman it may be coop/solo.

That's the hope, yes. However, I've also learned that in waiting for things like this to materialize, invariably something else comes along in the interim that's faster/better/tweaked right out of the box to do whatever it is they're trying to accomplish. This is a weird hobby.

A small group, 4 of us, was able to get Eclipse V2 out. Some of the things I discovered:
1) Not all the expansion races from V1 were included. (If I had actually read what I bought, I would have known)
2) I got models for the 6 base races, and 6 sets of terran races. That was cool, and very nice.
3) Bringing down the turns to 8, is huge.
4) Completed the game in about 4 hours, and it was fairly close, so we all had fun. (All have played V1 a lot, so maybe it was just our familiarity)
5) I lost, but that's nothing new.
6) SuperNova's (and expansion tile) are way overpowered if found in the first few turns.
7) Missles are very deadly, they always were, but they got a lot more so it seemed.
8) Getting two money for passing first, helps. A lot! Not game breaking, but it can help you out when you need to balance.

Overall, it was a lot of fun. Not sure if the quick time was that we all knew the game, or if it was a combo of shorter length and knowledge. There was a Dized app for the rule book, which was cool. But I liked the PDF version I found someplace. I had to hunt through too many broken up menu's in Dized, but I can see how it would be a good resource. I also have the playmat, and that made the game better as well, since the tiles all fit and you know how to place them.

I enjoyed the game, and the "expansions" i got from the kick starter were nice. Not sure if I would buy them all if I was buying it on the secondary market, but the playmat is something I will certainly would recommend.

And I didn't take any pictures, so I can't share anything, but let me know if any questions and I will try to get some upladed for anyone interested.

I play over 100 games a year and I win about five-six games a year. I don't play games to win them, I play games to see the process of play, what decisions people make, what works and what doesn't work. The reason I lose so many games is because I refuse to take a bunch of time to make the 'right' move, I just look at the board, and see what's what and make a move. It's very important to me that the games don't bog down into everyone waiting for someone to make the 'perfect' move.

Played our first game of Aeon's End: A New Age (The New Age? whatever) this weekend. We played with the recommended first play setup and we got crushed. I am starting to miss the original Aeon's End that we only *thought* was hard.

I always feel like if I don't win, I've wasted my time playing. Probably stems from only playing solo games, so I don't get the benefit of the social gaming interaction.

Need to figure out a way to break that paradigm and get over that mental hurdle, as it will likely kill boardgaming entirely for me.

Get a copy of Death Angel or play Robinson Crusoe. I don't think I've ever won a game of either across dozens of plays. Enjoy the journey.

I'd suggest just watching the game instead of your position in it. See what the other players do and get a sense of how the game plays out. Also in my opinion, the best games are those that take a lot of plays to really get a handle on how to win.

So, schools are now canceled in OR due to COVID-19 through the end of the month (or maybe longer), and I'm contemplating what to do with my three kids (16, 15, 11) while stuck at home.

I love boardgames - and all games, really - but my wife isn't a huge fan and it's a hard sell for the kids sometimes. I just picked up Imhotep, and I twisted their arms until I got them to play a couple of times. It got a pretty decent reception, and my wife actually said she enjoyed it (after I stopped blocking her strategy and pretty much let her win - she is very competitive and hates to lose).

We also play a ton of Five Crowns, which they all love but I kind of detest. It's a card game that is just so random and luck based. It's fun to play while having drinks and shooting the shit, but, as a game, it's pretty lacking. I think they like it because it's so simple.

All that said, any recommendations for games to keep us busy -- and the kids off their screens -- during our extended staycation? Probably looking for something with a cool setting/ambience (like Imhotep) and with a relatively manageable rule set I can teach them quickly. Bonus points for a game with some strategy that is easy to learn but difficult to master!

Haven't played it in a long time, but when I was 15/16, the board game of choice was Cosmic Encounter. I'd wait to hear from someone that's played a more recent copy, but I genuinely loved that game as a teenager.

The might also like any of the D&D board games - Wrath of Ashardalon or Castle Ravenloft - both I have experience with. There are others, I just haven't played them.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

Probably looking for something with a cool setting/ambience (like Imhotep) and with a relatively manageable rule set I can teach them quickly. Bonus points for a game with some strategy that is easy to learn but difficult to master!

Wingspan is the top-ranked family game on BoardGameGeek for very good reason. If you don't yet own it, I strongly suggest starting there. It tends to be a little more expensive, but does include exceptional quality components including a nifty thematic bird-feeder dice tower. It's so popular that it's frequently sold out at most online gaming stores, but I believe it's still available directly from Stonemeier Games.

I would also echo hentzau's suggestion of Pandemic. 7 Wonders, Lords of Waterdeep, Stone Age, Small World, and Splendor would all be great choices, too.

Looking at the ages makes me ask, what about a D&D campaign? Get the Starter Box for $15, and you have HOURS of fun.

Hopefully my daughter will get into it too but I'm enjoying my first playthru of Rallyman GT. Playing with two cars to run thru the rules for the first time but looking forward to trying out the solo AI that's posted on BGG. I think it will be easy enough to teach to my 13 year old and hopefully the wife will be interested. Your kids might enjoy the competition and push your luck elements.

We do like playing Ticket to Ride and Pandemic together at least.

Black lives matter!

We picked this up for Christmas. I think it is time to pull it out and give it a whirl.

If I could get them to play D&D with me, that would be a dream come true. Unfortunately, I think they’re all too cool for school and think their old man is a big nerd every time I mention it.

Screw it. I may try it anyway. If I take away all their screen access, what else are they gonna do? 🤗

Try easing 'em into it by starting out with Lords of Waterdeep. It's basically an entry-level Euro-style worker placement game with a wee splash of D&D-flavour that pretty much anyone can play and enjoy. If they like playing Lords of Waterdeep, then it's just a matter of pointing out how interesting it might be to play something that delves into the various quests your adventurers are sent upon... ;-)

Give it a go, man. 5E is great. And that starter box set is the perfect way to introduce. Premade characters, dice, and a really fun campaign that allows them to go up to 5th level by the time they finish it. Really the best way to introduce the game.
