I used to play Silent Service non-stop on my old Apple 2GS. Fun times!

Wait, what?
Totally missed this post back in '04.
The wiki entry is interesting. I remember seeing this on the shelf around 1995 at our local Software Etc. Had I known it would be collector's item, I'd have snapped it right up.

I couldn't decide on one ...

But I think I might select this one:

... not from the game per se, but if you don't know it, you owe it to yourself to find out about it.

I'd love to see Ultima redone too, as well as a RTS Syndicate.

Outcast. Loved the open-ended and sprawling landscape, and this was long before Farcry! Apparently someone's been working on a pseudo-sequel/remake taking advantage of higher res available today, so here's hoping it will eventually be released to PC and consoles.

Would *love* this if it were re-made as a sim and not a GTA clone.

Yeah, apparently it's a Crysis mod. I realized this after I posted about it, but it doesn't make it any less impressive.

I just came across my Indiana Jones Desktop Adventures box while looking for something the other day. I'd love to see that remade for today. It was great for a 10 minute gaming fix.

Sorry for the gravedigging, but I've just thought of another one. Anyone remember Street Rod? It was a game from the mid 80's (85-86) and it was fairly unique for its time. It was more or less a drag racing game focusing on modifying cars until you had a good enough car to race the King of the road. You either did this buy winning races and buying cars and parts by browsing the newspaper or by winning the opponent's car via pink slip. This game would be a good candidate for an iPad remake or some such. There was a sequel released in the 90's, but I never played it.

Just found out that there's an open-source fan made sequel, though it seems to have been abandoned as there isn't anything newer than 2005:

Thanks, Rumpy! Your post jolted this gem into my memory. Half the fun of this drag-racing sim was spending a ton of time tweaking all aspects of your car before the race. The other half of the fun was the actual race, where you had to really concentate on driving it. After the race, you could watch the replays from various camera angles. It was an enormous time-sink, and I loved every bit of it. I still have it here, and I'm tempted to install it again, but I much rather have an updated remake.

I never played that, Giles, but it does seem very similar. I don't consider the upgrading that many modern racing games have as very involved, and it's something I miss having in today's games.

Great game! I played it around 88-89 on my old girlfriend's computer. I'll have to look for the 90s version.

I liked Street Rod 1 much more than 2. The aqueduct racing wasn't my thing.
I got so good at Street Rod 1 that I found the straightest path to defeat The King, which I believe could be done in less than a month in-game time. Pink Slips all the way!

Yeah, from what I remember of the sequel, they also made the street racing longer and in general it was a much harder game. Racing games back then were also harder because the terrible physics most had and you couldn't really see much of a road ahead to correctly judge your driving line and much more about reflex. If you think about it, those games had a lot of blind spots. It's why I'd love to see a remake done with modern technology.

I'd have them remake Age of Rifles. There just isn't a decent Wargame construction set that allows for that period of conflict.
