Nothing much new to add, but I'll echo some of the previous choices -

Master of Magic
X-Com
Alternate Reality
Legacy of the Ancients

All had a certain magic to them. Not sure if that can be recaptured, with developers more commonly cashing in on a game's name and history and making a similar product.

Also, I think Devil's Whiskey is a pretty good game in the Bard Tale's vein. Yeah, sure it has problems, but it has gotten further than maybe other re-make type products, and just "feels" like the old BT games.

Another two cents...

Master of Orion 3.

Talk about getting lost in the design process. The fans really wanted MOO 2.5, but the designers and devs shifted the game focus totally. I really, really wanted to like MOO3, but I just couldn't bring myself to it.

Master of Magic of course. A Jagged Alliance 2 remake would be nice, or Star Control 2.

I reckon with a few small changes I could have turned Star Wars Rebellion from a poor game into a great game. It really had atmosphere.

Starflight 2
Master of Magic
Master of Orion 2
Privateer
X-com
The Summoning
Star Control 2 is being remade to work on XP. I've played it and it's the original that will run on XP. =)

I'd like Looking Glass to rise from the dead and release the next version of:

Terra Nova!

With a new single player campaign as cool as the last (without the cheezy FMV, thankyousomuch) and a full Battlefield/Tribes-esque 64 person multiplayer component! Woozah!

Not in any order:

1. DOOM -- not the travesty that is DOOM 3
2. X-Com -- but only if the same graphic style is retained (i.e. same graphics, higher resolution)
3. Conquest of the New World -- snazz up the graphics and maybe add a few more elements to the gameplay
4. Front Page Sports Football Pro -- best football game evar; bring it up to date
5. Deadlock II -- good game, horrible interface
6. Betrayal at Krondor -- 'cause it rocks; update the graphics and away we all go again!
7. Gangsters -- improve the realtime section
8. System Shock -- a good choice for a graphical update because so many have never played the original
9. Man of War II -- whoever said graphics count for nothing never saw this butt-ugly game
10. Master of Orion 3 -- and do it right this time

I'll have to second Terra Nove: SFC. However, I say reshoot the campy FMV and make it even campier! Man, I love FMV and I am such a sucker for B movies.

Cheers,

Daggerfall and/or Arena - Morrowind was great, but Daggerfall still has the edge (especially with updated graphics).

1) Sid Mier's Alpha Centauri: Into the Civ 3 graphic with all that Civ 3 added. Good lord I just wet myself thinking about it.

2) X-Com: Ideally with Silent Storm's engine.

3) Descent: Freespace: Ideally with Freelancer's engine. That's right. I love the mouse control.

The guys at ntcompatible have a possible solution to getting Magic: The Gathering to work in XP.

The graphics? Yes. With what Civ 3 ADDED? No.

Alpha Centauri was perfect as is. Don't you dare ever touch it, SuperHiro, I swear to God I will break every joint in your body.

Oh ho! It's so fucking on!

Alpha Centauri is like a really good porno. It's just the right length, decent plot... and most importantly, rather short lulls between the fun stuff. All in all... it's absolutely perfect.

Alpha Centauri + Civ 3's diplomacy, culture, resources would be the DVD version.

Culture was okay, but it had far too much power. I mean, the US culture is pretty strong, but you don't see Vancouver seceding from Canada. Resources had far too much power, as well. If you don't have rubber, or oil, you're stuck. Your entire strategy has to turn on a dime. You have to break alliances over stupid things.

The trading was a little better as far as just putting down a road. That was pretty cool, but once again, there was never really a problem in my book with the old system.

The diplomacy could use a slight upgrade, but if it ain't broke...

A list:

1. Wizard's Crown - Change nothing but the graphics and I'll be happy.
2. M.O.M. Needs some fixing, but I trust Stardock so no worries.
3. RoboSport - Needs graphics and better multiplayer and would sell 2m.

I hope that Stardock makes a killing with the MOM revival and some other companies explore selling off unused intellectual propoery to small, focused devlopment studios.

BWT for whomever asked about Day of the Tentacle...there is a prog out there SCUMMVM that will let you run older SCUMM based games...ie. Monkey Island, DOTT, etc. I just loaded it up the other day and it works GREAT!

http://www.scummvm.org/

"Bernard, float over here so I can punch you!" Heh.

Also, for the person that mentioned Bard's Tale - it's KIND of been remade, though not with licensing...it's called Devil Whiskey. Interface is the same, same style, everything...just updated graphics. Obviously they are very big fans of the original though.

Frontier: Elite II, probably. With a more user friendly interface and graphics that are better but not so good as to eliminate the possibility of seamless transitions & continuous space.

Be a heck of a shareware/indie project for someone to take on.

1. X-Com. Because the gameplay is so deep already, we don't need to change a thing except update the graphics.

2. SMAC - modify how overpowered flight is in the game. Update graphics. Done.

3. U7, U7: Serpent's Isle. Another great story ready for a graphical update.

A bit harder:

Empire - the all-time most playable wargame. It would be a fun challenge.
Jagged Alliance - add in more character interaction.
Battletech: The Cresent Hawk's Inception

Magic: The Gathering on XP

Postby Buatha » Tue Nov 09, 2004 9:14 pm

I have Duels of the Planeswalkers running in XP (with Spells of the Ancients) and have no problems.

This link discusses how to get it working with the original version:

http://forums.mtgnews.com/showthread.php?t=67392

Back on topic, I would vote for X-Com or Sundog: The Frozen Legacy.

Another vote for each of:

X-Com - I'd like to see a little more/different in a new release. The old one works fine on XP, so a re-release as-is would be pointless. Decent graphics and a better world map system would be nice. Maybe X-Com: Total War... :D

SMAC - some bugger borrowed mine and never gave it back! The diplomacy was great and hasn't been bettered since, in my opinion. Still looking for a bargain bin copy of this.

Stars! - same scale, same style, better UI. That'd be nice.

I'd also like to put in a vote for:

Tropico - there's still no other game like it and I'd love to have a larger scale, different location. That thing is just so much fun. The second one was cool, too, although I much preferred the more political leanings of the first.

I loved the original X-Com. A really good re-make would rule... HL2 Uber Mod Anyone?

Or how about X-Com but as a Shooter with the feel of the Human Missions in AvP2, and maybe a dash of 'Aliens'. Make the player feel seriously outguned and scared until they get better gear. Maybe toss in a Op: Flashpoint squad control model. You'll need to keep the base building and world view. Having some way to dynamically generate some missions would be needed as well. A Co-Op Multiplayer would also be a must.

No one will ever get it right, but it's cool to think about.

That'd be X-Com: Alliance, if I remember the title correctly. It was planned and hoped for, but has never appeared.

X-Com is still unrivalled in so many ways. Why oh why has nobody successfully cloned this game?

I'd love to see an updated Colonization. Solve the lagging midgame this time. Maybe incorporate some of the exploratory elements of Seven Cities of Gold, or go back to AH's Conquistador for the superpower rivalry aspect.

Starflight. Sure.

I also wish someone would do a true sequel to Railroad Tycoon that preserves train and track micromanagement within the big epic empire-builder framework.

TUNNELS OF DOOM?!?

Someone here besides me knows what that is? Awesome. I do believe that was the game that hooked me on RPG's forever. Snuck into the livingroom many a late night to play that sucker while my parents slept...

But...I'm not sure you could really "remake" a game like that. It would be so inherently different if made today you would not even recognize it as the same. It was practically just very blocky pixels if I remember correctly?

Plus, to me at least, that game was all about a new experience, in the wee early hours of CRPG's, that title may have been one of the first, if not the first? Don't know. I do know that it rocked my adolescent ass as being cool as hell.

I would remake HL2 without the requirements for Steam and no CD check for the retail version. Those two things have caused a lot of grief over an otherwise outstanding game.
