Tom vs. Bruce

Post by AWS260 »

Now this is a Kickstarter I can get behind.
Tom and/or Bruce wrote:Previously, we've pitched the column to websites, but among the sticking points to possible deals were limitations on what we could do and for whom we could write. We feel that even though we can be a bit obscure, verbose, or obscure and verbose, we have a specific style and sense of humor. We'd rather not do Tom vs. Bruce than compromise it. So by working directly for you, our Kickstarter benefactors, we get the same freedom and trust we had with our editors at Computer Gaming World.

***

The funding is for ten brand-new Tom vs. Bruce articles to be delivered roughly monthly over the next year. We chose this goal because it's what we would have been paid by Computer Gaming World for ten articles.

We've spent a lot of time on Tom vs. Bruce over the years. Believe it or not, it's hard to sound off-the-cuff, breezy, and conversational. And to schedule time to play these games. And to figure out how best to relate them without simply turning in a boring old AAR. And getting the best screenshots to illustrate our points. You'd never know from the way 1up chucked the text online and inserted random screenshots, but we were pretty proud of our visual assets. That's not a euphemism.

Thanks for letting us know about this. I pitched in. Support your local AAR writers!

Anyone have a link to "Jeff Green's marketing study" Tom mentions in the video?

I miss that magazine more than a lot in this world. It was always my favorite and I'm not jus tsaying that. From a few years before I even owned a computer I read each and every copy front to back. I loved it all...especially Scorpia. PC Gamer is ok and all that's left from those days but it cant hold a candle to what was Computer Gaming World :( I am so sad I lost all my old copies from back when.

I'd love to see these guys get Kickstarted. I loved all their articles. I also never agreed wit hone more than the other. They both seemed to hold stands the same as my opinions.

Well, Tom v Bruce reached their $10k goal. They have two $1,000 donors -- I'm curious to find out who they are. The only gajillionaire on their donor list that I recognize is Ken Levine of Bioshock fame.

Their stretch goal is $12.5k, which will allow them to bring on three collaborators, one of whom is Erik Wolpaw. I love me some Erik Wolpaw.

Good for them. Tom vs. Bruce was one of my favorite articles from Computer Gaming World.

Tom vs. Bruce

It's good to see that they not only secured the funding necessary but they also managed to squeeze in some stretch goals, including a few guest appearances by others and the opportunity for Bruce to fly to Tom for a face to face. I was morally obliged to chip in since I've been enjoying their banter on the Three Moves Ahead strategy podcast from its early days. They did attempt a Tom vs Bruce style four way using dawn of war II in one of the episodes. Anyway looking forward to seeing what comes out of it.

Ah. Somehow I missed this. I'm glad it was able to get funding without me though and thanks to all who did fork out some cash.

Reading it now. I dont understand why didn't use Emperor Battle for Dune. I wrote them about it too. Them not actually playing against each other is a slight cop out.

Yeah, they're doing a terrible job of updating their backers. Bruce posted the following in the comments section of their Kickstarter page at the end of February:
There absolutely will be new ones. We are working on two simultaneously, actually. Last month I flew out to California to film the "video" TvB with Tom and am editing it. We are also writing a joint piece with one of our featured contributors. We do apologize for the delays.
