Let's play "the contest"
I realized I hadn't bought a game in a while. "A while" being 2 weeks, which is a long time for me these days. I was curious how long it would be before I buy another game.
So let's play a game - figure out the last time you bought a game, then post back in the thread when you buy another game.
The rules:
-if you get a preorder that you bought before today, that doesn't count as buying a game
-you have amnesty for today so you can buy System Shock 2 or something in the Steam sale
There are no winners and no losers. In fact, everyone is a winner, because if you don't buy a game, you're working at your backlog, and if you do buy a game, hey, new game. We'll just learn something about people's buying and playing habits. And maybe next time you think about a game, you may think about this thread and change your mind. Or maybe you won't be thinking about buying a game, and then you'll think about this thread and buy a game. Or chocolate pudding.
Here goes:
I last bought a game on 1/28/13: Ni No Kuni

Well if we are counting on when we preordered a game It will be further back but the last game I bought was Borderlands 2 and it was released September 18, 2012. Lets just count that as last bought game. See you in a year or so.
Borderlands 2 - 9/8/12

I think the last one I bought for myself was Diablo III - back in July-ish, 2012. I've bought my daughter some games but figure that doesn't count since she is 6 and doesn't have her own resources.

Re: Let's play "the contest"
Wow--I'm surprised at myself. I've been very restrained about PC games lately.
The last PC game I bought was Combat Mission: Fortress Italy on October 24, 2012.
(I bought the Lego "Lord of the Rings" game for my boys in December, and I did play it some, but I don't consider it a game for me.)
I've been on a boardgame spree, though, and I've bought several games this year alone:
Up Front (kickstarter - not yet available)
Normandy '44 (used)
Fields of Fire (used)
Guns of Gettysburg (kickstarter - not yet available)
A Distant Plain (P500 - not yet available, not yet charged)
[EDIT: Oops! Discussion is PC-based.]

The last thing I bought was Lucid, I guess July 25 (last time it was 75% off). I thought it looked soothing.
wot?
To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?
Unless one loses a precious thing, he will never know its true value. A little light finally scratches the darkness; it lets the exhausted one face his shattered dream and realize his path cannot be walked. Can man live happily without embracing his wounded heart?

Yeah, are we counting boardgames in here, or just video/PC type games?

Just video games. I thought about that, but decided to keep it simple. Board games don't really go into the same kind of backlog because they are designed to be played over and over.

Then that would be Skyrim. November 11, 2011.

That is untrue, I just don't buy a lot of games anymore. Those just happened to be my last purchases.Teggy wrote:Well we've already learned that Milton hates all games that don't have "Borderlands" or "Guild Wars" in the title.miltonite wrote:Well if we are counting on when we preordered a game It will be further back but the last game I bought was Borderlands 2 and it was released September 18, 2012. If we were counting board games I would be in here at least once a month.

Yesterday, 2/14/2013. Bought Conquest of Elysium 3 on Steam for $2.50.
Expecting my next purchase will be when some game I'm interested in is on sale for a similarly dirt cheap price. Can't fathom what game would cause me to pay anywhere near full price at this point.

Last game I bought was Fire Emblem: Awakening on 2/4/13. I've got a preorder for Etrian Odyssey 4 due in a couple weeks, which doesn't count since I've had it preordered for months now. After EO4 I honestly don't know if I'll buy another game until Age of Wonders 3 comes out.

I preordered Omerta on 1/18/2013. I am not aware of anything else new that I am interested in buying... that may be a first for me. A really good sale (<$20) on Far Cry 3 or Assassin's Creed 3 would break me though.

Last purchase: THQ MegaPack:
January 23, 2013
(Note, I did buy GW2 for a friend as a gift this weekend, but I wouldn't count that for the purposes here).
2nd Note: if Dragonborn goes on Steam sale, I'm not necessarily counting on that as a purchase - should I?

I'm going to say yes, because you could play something else instead of spending money on the expansion if you wanted to.Pyperkub wrote:

Re: Let's play "the contest"
My last official purchase was on 1/22 of this year -- FarCry 3 during an Amazon sale. I have a $50+ credit with Amazon and $32 in my STEAM wallet, left over from the Xmas sale. If you told me two months ago that my balance would remain unchanged for this long, I would have thought you were crazy. I'd like to participate but I have a feeling sooner than later I'm going to seem something I'd like as part of an absurd sale.
Though I will admit, working through backlog has certainly killed my motivation to play new games.

Well like I said, there's no "winner". It's more to see how different people's spending patterns are on games.

Well, surprise, surprise, I've already bought a game. I was hoping for an original Fallout sale during the last Steam sale, and one finally showed up today. I picked up the Fallout pack for a whopping $6.79 out of my Steam wallet.

I last bought EVERY BUNDLE. I think I had to quit the second "The Contest" not long after I joined GG because I found it too stressful.

Re: Let's play "the contest"
I've been buying less and less new in the last couple of years, primarily because I no longer feel like I own my copies, due to the online activation thing that has seemingly gained near-total acceptance.
That said, I still do buy the occasional "must-have" game that I'll buy in spite of that.
The last game I bought was "FarCry 3" on 12-28-12.
Wow. It's been two months; a new record for me, I think. In my heyday, I used to buy two or three full-priced games a month, along with maybe a half-dozen bargain-bin games a month.
I'm not counting the occasional GOG game I might have bought in the interim, since I already own boxed copies of everything I buy there, and my purchases there are so sporadic, I have no idea when or what the last one was. EDIT: Just checked, my last GOG purchase was 12-20-12 for "Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition" (a game I already have two boxed copies of).
