Favourite series of all time?
Not sure if we've done this before. We've certainly discussed best/favourite games but fave series?
Civilization? Age of Empires? Final Fantasy? Baldur's Gate?
And how do you see recurring characters? Are Rayman games a series or just platformers with a recurring set of characters? Mario? Donkey Kong?

Baldur's Gate, easily. It's my first true love.
wot?
To be fair, adolescent power fantasy tripe is way easier to write than absurd existential horror, and every community has got to start somewhere... right?
Unless one loses a precious thing, he will never know its true value. A little light finally scratches the darkness; it lets the exhausted one face his shattered dream and realize his path cannot be walked. Can man live happily without embracing his wounded heart?

Ultima. Even though it faltered at the end, it's still the one that really made me a computer gamer.

I'd have to go with Ratchet & Clank, since it covers at least 2 generations.

Re: Favourite series of all time?
Tough call.
I've played months (probably literally) of Civilization games. And I liked all the FEAR games.
But the series that probably pulls me in the most is STALKER. I've played all three games at least two times each. But it's the fact that ever few years I find the urge to play again. Or less. I've actually been feeling the urge again recently.

Definitely Baldur's Gate...so many great memories from that short series, as well as all the other Infinity Engine games. I think the fact that they're still among so many people's favorite games after so many years really says something about how great they are.

Out of the Park Baseball really just updates each year, so I won't count that. The other choice is the Total War series.

Thief, Fallout, and Baldur's Gate all made the running, but let's be honest: I'm me. I'm going with Elder Scrolls.

Re: Favourite series of all time?
If we are solely going based on games. Then I have to go with ultima. I would sit right now and play any of them. I wish there had so been more with dragonlance. It was by far my favorite series of anything and the couple games they did make so didn't do it justice. I mean being able to defeat takhisis with a kender backstab while holding a small dragonlance did seem sort of like a cheap shot.

I'll go with the Star Trek adventure game series: 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites.

I'm a wargamer more than any other genre, so I'll say Combat Mission. Since 2000, I've rarely not had at least one PBEM going in one of the CM games.

Re: Favourite series of all time?
I'd have to go with the old Gold Box D&D games, starting with Pool of Radiance. I had a bit of a symbiotic relationship going on between those games and pencil/paper D&D, and my love for one just increased my love for the other.
You could probably trace my love of all things fantasy and RPG back to Pool of Radiance. There have been MANY RPG series since then that I spent more hours on or loved just as much, but I have to give credit to the game that was my "origin."

It's this or Fallout. They have both gone through amazing evolutions. It's a tough call. I think I would have to give it to Elder Scrolls as well.Blackhawk wrote:Thief, Fallout, and Baldur's Gate all made the running, but let's be honest: I'm me. I'm going with Elder Scrolls.

Re: Favourite series of all time?
This. I actually used to call in sick from school to play Pools of Darkness as a junior. Just something about having a character at level 40, casting Delayed Blast Fireball, doing 300-500 damage, wiping out entire armies. Ahh...YellowKing wrote:I'd have to go with the old Gold Box D&D games, starting with Pool of Radiance. Civilization by a wide margin. Don't think I've played anything else since Civ 5 was released.

Wizardry (the game that started it all for me), and I should probably add Civilization as well, though I didn't jump in until Civ4.

I'd go with Thief.
Half Life would be my runner up. The original remains my favorite, but I think the Thief series was overall stronger.tjg_marantz wrote:Not a single HL? Interesting.

Somewhere high on my list would be Utima I through VI. (I never played anything later.)
