Board(ish) Games for Two?

Post by Fretmute »

My girlfriend's dad had a brain tumor removed, and is stuck in the ICU for a while. Does anyone have some pointers for low real estate (i.e. fits on the hospital bed tray) games that she and he can pass the time with?

The only thing I have is Zombie Dice, and they are over it.

Lost Cities. Plays quick and is easy to learn.

Lost Cities travels nice and I'm pretty sure it would fit on that bed tray. I keep seeing people rave about Hive, but I've never played. Not sure if Mr. Jack Pocket would fit on the table, but it would be something different.

EDIT: That's what I get for taking too much time!

Blokus works well with 2, and can probably fir on a hospital tray.

Odin's Ravens is an easy to learn card game that I don't remember needing much room. Also: Lost Cities

What about old school games? Cribbage, backgammon, Yahtzee even?

I was going to recommend Dungeon Roll, because it's the tiniest game I own but I wasn't sure the hospital would appreciate the clickety-clack of 37 dice flying around a tray table.

Looks like Lost Cities is in the lead. :)

What about Dominoes?

Damn tapatalk. I forget the name of the mushroom set collection game. Also love letter, not great with two but playable. I am sure I have others that my wife will never ever play. :(

Thanks for the suggestions thus far.

She is, for various reasons, looking for games that he doesn't yet know how to play, which rules out the more mundane ones.

2 De Mayo. It borrows the write your orders then resolve mechanic from Diplomacy. One player is the occupying Napoleonic French force and the other are Spanish freedom fighters attempting to inflict enough casualties on the French troops before they are inevitably wiped out. It plays pretty fast (30 min.) and the board is very small.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation. I believe it's small enough to fit on a tray.

It's a bit hard to come by, but there seems to be an incoming reprint:

I have it and have never played it (or punched it, I think), I can lend that too.

I don't want you to get Super Drug Resistant Staph all over your games.

[edit] - But it's a fine offer! Thank you.

How do you disinfect board games?

Also Battle Line is similar to Lost Cities but much better. Lost Cities is pretty basic and will become stale pretty quickly. Battle Line spices it up a bit.

Another vote for Lost Cities. It has a parlour game feel to it.

Rummy style games are generally good two player games where you can sit and talk and play or sit and not talk and play.

Dominion is rather fun; it's basically the only boardgame* my girlfriend likes to play with me, because it's not too 'agressive'. But you need a bit of table space to lay down about 16 piles of cards or so.

*it's a cardgame really, no board at all.
