My understanding? That they didn't use the Kickstarter website. Otherwise, not much.

Kickstarter is just one form of crowdfunding?

I have been invited to an annual post-Christmas game of Twilight Imperium 3 with my sister's friends. I would like to finally finish a game of TI but that requires (1) two days and (2) people who are serious and know the rules.

Frankly, I'm intrigued at the possibility of a most epic game and at the same time a bit frightened at the likely result. Her husband happily threw himself into the grinder against me during our 4 hour game of Eclipse at Octocon. No doubt we would end up in another 15+ hour grudge match.

God, I miss TI3. I don't miss the 14 hour games that you, me, Seppe, Lawnboy and (the long absent) Snow used to endure. But I do miss the game itself.

Kotaku writes about being blackballed by Bethesda and Ubisoft.
Kotaku wrote:The truth is that we’ve been cut off from Bethesda since our December 2013 report detailing the existence of the then-secret Fallout 4. Ubisoft has been nearly radio silent since our December 2014 report detailing the existence of the then-unannounced Assassin’s Creed Victory (renamed Syndicate). When we ask representatives from either company for comment or clarification regarding breaking news, we hear nothing in response. When we ask them about their plans for upcoming games or seek to speak with one of their developers about one of their projects, it’s the same story. Total silence.

I remember Snow. We played Tide of Iron at the first Octocon.

Now I miss Tide of Iron too.

I remember when he got ToI. He came over to my place and excitedly set the whole thing up. We played the first scenario...and I actually beat him. You've been around me enough to know how embarrassing that can be for someone of even normal intelligence, let alone geniuses like you guys. I suspect that shame is what drove him out of Chicago.

I'm going to be playing in a one-shot game of Spirit of '77 this weekend.

The DM and other players are all grown adults. They're married, have teenaged kids, and professional jobs.

I'm going to be the only one there with any actual memories of the 1970s.

Goddamn that makes me feel old.

FWIW, that game really seems more rooted in movies and TV of the 1970s. Everyone will be on board.

RIP Wayne England
Wayne England, one of the most iconic tabletop gaming artists of the past few decades, has passed away. Known for his illustrations in Warhammer rule books, on the pages of White Dwarf magazine, Dungeons and Dragons manuals and Magic the Gathering cards, England helped define the artistic style of many a game’s universe.

Labyrinth
Europe has announced the summer release of Jim Henson's Labyrinth: The Board Game.

The new game, created in partnership with The Jim Henson Company, features five beautifully crafted figures capturing the likeness of the major characters from the movie. The game, designed for up to four players aged 6 and up, is a fast-playing family game with an emphasis on simple game play and evocative art.

In addition to the figures, the game also includes a 2' x 2' game board, 32 Labyrinth cards, over 30 game tokens, 6 polyhedral dice, 6 reference cards, 4 character sheets, 4 Ability cards, 4 Weakness cards, 4 card stand-ups, a Goblin Clock and Clock hand, and a rules booklet.

The continent. Or at least a company in it.

It's River Horse Games out of the UK.

I need to stop buying games. In the last 72 hours the following were either purchased or are arriving at my house soon:

Attack on Doom Rock
Project Z
Legends of Andor
Lost Legacy
Elder Sign: Omens of Ice

I just packed up a whole bunch of stuff to sell at auction during a game convention in June...and immediately filed up the shelf space cleared with more stuff.

Star Wars: Imperial Assault question for those who own it.

My kids and I were given a copy of Imperial Assault for Christmas, along with the Twin Shadows expansion. We've had to shelve it because school kept us to busy for a 'campaign' based game, but school is almost out, and I'm planning to dust it off.

We've never played it, but both kids and I are experienced board gamers.

Should I integrate the expansion content into the base campaign for our playthrough, or hold off and just play the base set first?

It's possible that the expansion includes a few random missions that might make it into the campaign, but I doubt you would be able to tell them apart from the originals. I think it all meshes well. Anything Tatooine- or plot-specific from the expansion will be excluded from the original campaign by the setup procedure (which is pretty elaborate). You'll have a couple of new heroes to choose from, but I don't think there's any reason to avoid these in the main campaign.

In short, I'm pretty sure that mixing the expansion material into the main game won't do any harm. You're just stirring buckets of Star Wars theme into buckets of Star Wars theme.

I didn't get far enough into Imperial Assault to really dig into this, but at the time I remember wondering how you integrated the expansions once you started the campaign, because the Imperial player builds out his deck of "encounters" right when the campaign starts. I'm sure there's an answer, but at the time I questioned it I couldn't find it.

I believe you have to start the campaign with the expansion already in play.

The core of the expansion is a whole separate campaign, so its missions wouldn't fold into the original campaign anyway. Some of the random optional missions might, but they're generic enough to fit in either storyline.

All I have is Twin Shadows, but that campaign is designed to combine with the original campaign, although it is also playable standalone.

This is a great longform piece on the ancient Egyptian board game Senet. It's a delightful read, filled to the brim with quirky old Egyptologists.

There's a new expansion out for New York 1901, Goons of New York 1901. Not the kind of thing that would normally interest me -- I've never played the base game -- except that it was designed by grade-school kids at an after-school board game program in my neighborhood.

I think that's pretty cool.
After gameplay, each child provides structured notes on winning tactics, losing lessons, and ideas for new elements and mechanisms — then the students stand and present these thoughts, after which they vote for their favorites — all with the goal of reinventing the game.

In the case of New York 1901, after two weeks of work we had whittled five hundred submissions down to 98 distinct ideas for modifying the game. These included things like airports, day and night phases, taxes, eminent domain, and of course zombies. The heavy-hitting classics made the cut, too: Godzilla, King Kong, and a "gigantic worm".

While looking for some info on using Tabletop Simulator, I came across this review for it that made me laugh.
9/10
Pros:
+Easy to comprehend
+Best workshop support on Steam hands down

Cons:
-Trolls are too frequent
-Guy watched porn on tablet while playing risk with us, but I was winning so I didn't want to quit.

Though I wouldn't have thought to use the ingame tablet to watch porn. So perhaps I wouldn't be that great a resource after all.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to play mansions of madness with a friend in China using tabletop simulator, the MoM app, and FaceTime.

I suspect just setting up a webcam to display the table and allow communication is the way to go though.
