...been a slouch the last few years. The unplayed loom larger and I'm turning sixty this year.
This year will be different. My wife never wanted anything to do with computer games. Now all that's changed. She is firmly hooked on hidden object puzzle games. This year promises Might & Magic 10, Wasteland 2, Blackguards, Age of Decadence, Witcher 3, Divinity:OS, Pillars of Eternity, and South Park:Stick of Truth. And that's just some of the rpgs...

Games Finished
Skyborn - 1/1/14 - story-driven, easy combat, 15hr., RPG Maker game
Grotesque Tactics - 1/3/14 - bickering-driven, 20hr., male showvinism-filled with panty-sniffing goblin, patch essential, tactical rpg
Halo:CE - 1/11/14 - could have done without the timed arcade race at the end.
King's Bounty: The Legend- 2/13/14 - AAA+ Ninety-five Quests done, volumes of well-written story, being a completionist is necessary to win, leveling strategy and tactical combat always balanced, travel and ui awesome, lowest point was having all my favorite units become cannon fodder towards the end.
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition- 9/22/14 - bought the original before the turn of the century and never played it. Forced myself to finish it now. Go Bhaalzboy! I hope the sequel is better.
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines- 10/24/14 - AAA+ My second time through as the ugly/stealthy Nosferatu. This time I won the maverick ending. One of the best games of all time plus ten years of faithful patching and restoring deleted content has made it brilliant. Troikalove to Gabe Newell in the final credits.
Legend of Grimrock 2- 11/11/14 - AA- The minus is for the stupidly difficult endboss and wasting my precious build points on the worthless firearm skill. Last time I had this much puzzle fun was Portal(s).
Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes- 11/28/14 - AAA+ Finally got around to "Elemental Redemption". Played on challenging difficulty, in small world with all nine opponents. Took solely magic paths for research, champion and city builds. Won "spell of making" victory in exactly 400 seasons. I especially enjoyed the negotiations part - it made me feel really shrewd. What a fun game!

Not Worth Finishing
Alien Logic: Skyrealms of Jorune - 1/12/14 - too much aimless wandering
Dominions 4 - 1/12/14 - I've reached the conclusion that the massive amount of inherent randomness in this game discourages me from making any further attempt to learn its complexities.

Now Playing
Bioshock
Battle for Wesnoth

Jesus said, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body."[Matt 10:28] God can totally destroy us.

Jesus also said, "For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”[John 6:40] Eternal life is conditional.

His disciple John wrote, "Whoever has the Son has eternal life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have eternal life. [1 John 5:12] Eternal life is optional.

"Finished"
Defense Grid: The Awakening - Feb 28
Commander: The Great War - August 2. Victory playing as the Entente.
Shadowrun Returns - Dec 1
Thomas Was Alone - Dec 6

*I used to have more on this list but I removed them because some are not the type that can be finished, some are ongoing and some I chose not count because they were short tech demos or casual games.
Maybe some of those should be included but they don't count for me.

2013 - 21 games finished
2012 - 12 games finished
2011 - 27 games finished

Only nine games finished last year...yet more proof that life gets in the way of gaming as I get older. There are some great experiences on that list though, with The Last of Us easily being my game of the year. Let's see what 2014 and a new console generation bring...

Finished

Grand Theft Auto V - March 23
Splinter Cell: Blacklist - July 8
Dust: An Elysian Tale - August 3
Max: The Curse of Brotherhood - August 16

In Progress

TitanFall

I suppose I can post here, but I tend to abandon a lot more than I finish. At least with that thread, I can finally get a sense of closure when I've decided to leave it behind.
It's almost as if people are the problem.

Because I'd actually like to keep track this year:

Finished!
-Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - Fun for the first 2/3, difficult spiked like crazy for the last third, making is way no fun to play.
-Super Mario 3D World - 1/22 - Finished up through the end of world flower. Debating whether to go completionist.
-The Last of Us - 1/25
-The Stanley Parable - 2/19
-Assassin's Creed 4 - 2/27
-Dishonored - 3/21 36 hours, game and DLC low chaos. Probably going back through in high chaos. (Finished high chaos 7/5)
-Walking Dead season 1 - 5/15 (took a side trip into GW2, CK2, and there was a two week vacation, hence the time between Dishonored and this)
-Saint's Row the Third - 6/3 (main only, turns out I don't own the DLC)
-Walking Dead: 400 Days - 6/14 Yeah, it took me a month to get to playing the hour-long DLC.
-Thomas Was Alone - 7/12 Good time, though the last two levels were more annoying than difficult, and ended kind of abruptly.
-Saints Row IV - 7/12 Main game, both DLCs, all solo side activities.
-Bioshock Infinite - 7/22 Eh, it was a decent game, but definitely not game of the year material. Pacing problems at the end, for sure.
-Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds - 7/25
-Spec Ops: The Line - 8/24
-Steamworld Dig - 9/7
-Borderlands 2 - 10/14 Playthrough 1 and Tiny Tina DLC. Will probably do TVHM and the other DLCs, but no guarantees, so I'm calling this finished for the purposes of the List.
-Middle Earth: Shadow of Morrrrdorrrr - 11/15/14 ~25 hours, most stuff done.
-Mass Effect 3 - 12/14/14 - ~43 hours, no DLC.
-South Park: Stick of Truth - 12/21 - 14 hours. Holy hell was this all kinds of wrong and awesome.
-The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - 12/21 - 4 hours
-Octodad: Dadliest Catch - 12/25 - 3 hours

Currently Playing
  • Lego Marvel Super Heroes(PS4)
    Van Helsing (PC)
Games Finished
  • Assassins Creed IV (PC) - this is effectively done as I've got 94% completion and the main quest and almost all collectibles are done. I may try some online at some point.
Games Abandoned/Retired
  • Minecraft (PC) - I've not put any time into this for awhile. I may fire it up again if we restart an OO server.
Injustice: Gods Among Us (PS4) - This lasted about 1 hour until I couldn't get a combo in the tutorial (some sort of kick/juggle multi-hit combo). I retried many times and even went back to it another day. No dice. It was a BD present, but martial arts fighting games aren't really my thing. Too much button mashing for me.

7/10 Papo & Yo (PC) - Moments of awesome interwoven with moments of kill me now. Short, not very replayable, but beautiful, original, and worth it.
8/10 Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PC) - Best implementation of a control gimmick ever, beautiful and clever, but easy and short.
7/10 Dracula: Love Kills (PC) - As recent hidden object games go, it's satisfactory, although the story is laughable.
8/10 Lilly Looking Through (PC) - Another <3 hour game. Sweet, beautiful artwork, good puzzles. Sort of like Amanita's games but less abstract.
6/10 Midnight Mysteries: The Edgar Allan Poe Conspiracy (PC) - Plus one for being about Poe, but old HO games don't hold up at low resolution, and this one is super short.
6/10 Serena (PC) - a 45 minute free adventure, neat idea worth playing I guess.
7/10 Infected: The Twin Vaccine (PC) - Good twist on hidden object games by playing more like an inventory-driven adventure game. Less than 4 hours, though.
8/10 Gone Home (PC) - What it does well, it does fantastically well. It gives the player a real house to explore and unfolds a story in a unique, open but guided way.
7/10 Dark Fall 2: Lights Out (PC) - Should have been a 9/10, but there are major puzzle design flaws that allow you to bypass too much story, and it's not creepy enough.
5/10 Where Angels Cry (PC) - Another lite adventure under 3 hours, with good puzzles but awful writing, voice acting, art, and animation.
9/10 Amnesia: The Dark Descent (PC) - Excellent horror, madness, and adventure, hindered only by limited delivery of the story. Played the Portal/Justine add-on too.
8/10 Hexcells and Hexcells Plus (PC) - Perfect improvement on Minesweeper, and Plus is much more difficult, but of course no replay value.
10/10 The Cat Lady (PC) - Seriously, if you liked Sanitarium...awesome sound, art, writing, and the gameplay is mostly satisfying. A shocking, graphic must-play.
8/10 Abyss: The Wraiths of Eden (PC) - About as good as a hidden object game can be, it's really a lite adventure game with mostly fetch-the-right-tool puzzles.
10/10 The Walking Dead: Season 2 (PC) - Plays just like the first season, tries hard to keep you emotionally invested in the characters, and it works.
10/10 Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse (PC) - Beautiful return to the style of BS 1 and 2, must-play for point-and-click fans.

Games Finished
1/24/14 - Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (XB1) - 84% completion when I finished main storyline. May go back and try to hit 100%, plus I still need to do the Freedom Cry DLC.
2/24/14 - Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PC) - great game. Not challenging but very emotional experience that I'm glad I played.
4/13/14 - Infamous: Second Son (PS4) - I actually beat this one about a week after release, but wanted to wait until I finished both a good and evil play through. Got my platinum trophy as well.
5/15/14 - Batman: Arkham Origins (PC) - Thought this game got a bit of a bad rap. I really enjoyed it even if it was derivative of the first two games.
6/18/14 - Watch Dogs (XB1) - Close to 80% completion. Did most side quests but passed on the collectible grind.
6/28/14 - Gone Home (PC) - Intriguing game that was way too short and probably not totally in my wheelhouse, but I enjoyed it.
7/7/14 - Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4) - One of the best shooters I've played in years. Not because it really does anything new, but because it executes the fundamentals so beautifully. Extremely well-paced, challenging without being frustrating, and an engaging story with characters you start to care about. I don't typically pay full price for shooters, but I enjoyed every penny of this one.
7/31/14 - Monument Valley (iOS) - Beautiful game that has some very clever and lovingly crafted levels. Wish it was a little longer and more challenging, but for 3 bucks it was a pleasant
experience.
7/31/14 - Shadowrun Returns (PC) - Fun little game that scratched my RPG itch for a bit. A little too short, but I guess that's a bit of a blessing for me these days. Not great, not terrible, but it was fun to jump back into the Shadowrun world after so many years. I'll definitely pick up Dragonfall the next time it goes on sale.
9/7/14 - Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition (PS4) - Beat campaign on Expert with a Crusader. Despite having sunk at least 100 hours into D3 on the PC, I picked this up on a whim. Glad I did, as I really had a blast.
9/27/14 - Dodo Master (iOS) - Fun little platformer I picked up cheap. Great production values. Short but satisfying.
9/29/14 - The Last of Us: Remastered (PS4) - Storytelling wise this game deserves all the 9s and 10s it got. I didn't feel the gameplay was perfect, but I will give credit to the combat system which made every fight seem like a desperate struggle for survival. One of the most stressful, heavy games I've ever played. I'm glad I played it, but I have no desire to ever play it again and was glad when it was over.
10/23/14 - Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (PS4) 100% completion - Fantastic game - my thoughts are over in the PC thread.
11/10/14 - Sunset Overdrive (XB1) - all storyline missions, all collectibles. Another terrific game and in the running for GOTY for me along with Shadow of Mordor.

Finished
  1. Tomb Raider: Survival Edition (Jan 5, PC, Hard combat difficulty, 92% completion) Rating: 5/8 (opinion)
  2. Shufflepuck Cantina Deluxe (Feb 21, PC, 22 hours) Rating: 6/8. A fun, addictive homage to the sci-fi air hockey game Shufflepuck Café, though it emphasizes grinding and collection over raw challenge.
  3. Air Forte (Mar 12) Rating: 2/8. Bundle trash in which you fly your airplane over icons that solve math, geography, and vocabulary challenges. At least it has that Blendo style and is over in under an hour.
  4. Redshirt (Mar 14, 12 hours 45 minutes) Rating: 6/8 (opinion)
  5. Waking Mars (Apr 2, PC, 10 hours, 90% completion) Rating: 6/8. Addictive for its writing, voice acting, and scientific veneer. The plant management and Metroidvania movement are, mmm, okay.
  6. Gone Home (Apr 13) Rating: 7/8. Brilliant "detective" story told through found journals and letters that explore family and romantic relationships with great writing and cultural authenticity.
  7. Triple Town (Apr 24, PC) Rating: 4/8. This match-3 is very addictive at first, but in a matter of hours, you'll have seen everything except for the pointless trinkets for which you can grind.
  8. Device 6 (May 1) Rating: 3/8. Overrated interactive fiction with gimmicky multidirectional scrolling text, awful puzzles, and trite story. Nicely done epilogue, though.
  9. 10000000 (Aug 6, PC, 8 hours, score 10,200,273) Rating: 6/8. Fun and addictive match-3 RPG, but because of the precision required, it should be played on a touchscreen device, not with a mouse.
  10. Thomas Was Alone (Aug 27, PC, 5 hours, completed without hints) Rating: 3/8. The narration is cute, but the puzzle platforming is tedious and I didn't understand the story in the end.
  11. Dragon's Dogma (Aug 30, PS3, 114.5 hours, earned The Hero trophy) Rating: 6/8. A good alternative to the Elder Scrolls games with much better combat and a smaller scale, plus its own set of annoyances. I'm not bothering with the Dark Arisen content.
  12. Revolution 60 (Sep 15, iOS, Normal difficulty) Rating: 3/8. Cinematic sci-fi thriller with quick time events, branching plot, and real-time combat. I like the all-female cast, but would also like better pacing and a clearer story.
  13. Trauma Team (Sep 20, 32.5 hours) Rating: 5/8 (opinion)
  14. The Walking Dead Season 2 (Nov 11, PC) Rating: 5/8. Very bleak and harrowing continuation, but the relationships aren't as poignant and the finale is too soap opery.
  15. The Wolf Among Us (Nov 28, PC) Rating: 6/8. Good noir tale with intriguing mix of fairytale characters. Looks beautiful and has good social commentary, but inconsistent in voice acting quality and pretty short overall.
  16. The Cat Lady (Dec 6) Rating: 6/8. Despite a slow start and low-budget production, I quite enjoyed this tour of a suicidal woman's physical and emotional horrors.
  17. Hoplite (Dec 9, iOS, earned Victory achievement with 71 points) Rating: 6/8. Cool, accessible litle puzzle roguelike.
  18. Doug Dug (Dec 10, iOS, high score $19,100 516m) Rating: 4/8. This Dig Dug-like game isn't finishable, but I'm done with it. It's addictive, but I wish it was more than a score chase.
  19. The Journey Down: Chapter One (Dec. 15, iOS, completed without hints) Rating: 5/8. Rastafari-flavored point-and-click adventure. Has charm, reggae, and high production values, but the story and puzzles aren't that interesting yet.
  20. Detective Grimoire (Dec. 19, iOS) Rating: 4/8. Collect clues, talk to suspects, and solve deduction puzzles for an unexciting case.
  21. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Dec. 28, 86 stars) Rating: 7/8. My first Mario game since the original Super Mario Bros. Rich with cartoony adventure and challenge.
  22. Bulletstorm (Dec. 29, PC, Normal difficulty) Rating: 4/8. It gets more fun as more weapons and skillshots become available, but it hardly rises above the dumb roid shooter genre.
  23. They Breathe (Dec. 29, PC): Rating: 4/8. Half-hour art game about a frog exploring the scary aquatic world. There is a payoff at the end, but it's annoying to get there.
  24. The Stanley Parable (Dec 30, PC) Rating: 4/8. I wasn't much charmed by this well-produced meta-joke of a game.
  25. Lume (Dec 30, PC) Rating: 4/8. A cute, artistically impressive little adventure with you-gotta-be-kidding-me puzzles.
Rating system: 6-8 Thumbs up; 4-5 Thumbs askew; 0-3 Thumbs down.

Abandoned
  1. Closure: Playing with light and darkness makes for some neat puzzles, but the game is mostly pretty annoying. Stopping after completing 14 puzzles. The best closure is to walk away.
  2. A Virus Named Tom: I like how this requires outside-the-box thinking and has a malicious protagonist. But the requirements in dexterity, both mental and physical, became too great for me. Gave up during the third set of puzzles (holo-suit).
  3. MacGuffin's Curse: It was a good idea to set a series of box-sliding puzzles inside a city to make it feel like an adventure game. But it's still a tedious box-sliding game, and I'm not taken by the story or humor. Stopped at 13% completion.
  4. Intrusion 2: I like how you can ride things and that shooting from elevated cover is advantageous. Otherwise, this is a dumb platform shooter with aggravating "physics" and awful music.
  5. Paint it Back: This is my first nonogram game. I really enjoyed the mental workout as well as the impressive pixel art and humorous painting titles. But, after completing only 4 of the 13 galleries, I've had my fill.
  6. Unstoppable Gorg: Too hard for me to beat the 9th level even on Easy, and I wasn't having much fun anyway.
  7. Dream Quest: I introduced this way-fun roguelike to OO, but have given up on ever beating it. And I resent that everyone I introduced it to has surpassed me at it.
  8. Little King's Story: Gave me 40 hours of fun. But it has major flaws in control and navigation and I don't feel like attempting the penultimate boss battle again. YouTubing the rest.
  9. Pikmin 2: Similar to Little King's Story, but I hate it. Decided after one evening of play that it would never be fun.
  10. Threes: OK, but I prefer Doge 2048.
  11. Puzzlejuice: Mix of Tetris and Scrabble that could have worked, but it's buggy and the difficulty ramps up too quickly.
  12. The Nightmare Cooperative: Puzzle roguelike in which you control multiple adventurers all at once and can recruit more. Too messy and vague and I don't like the presentation.
  13. RGB Express: Simple puzzle game of routing trucks to their pickup and delivery points. Just two sets of puzzles were enough for me.
  14. Card City Nights: Boring deckbuilding game in a Pokémon-like setting.

Just finished Defender's Quest:

Summary: Worth the 5 hours you will put into it, but note this game also started life as a flash game on Kongregate.com (and still is, AFAIK).

Some of the cut scenes banter is pretty funny, and the title doesn't take itself too seriously. Graphics absolutely suck (compared to something like Defense Grid, for instance)

Genre: Tower defense
Twist: You have a central on-screen "hero" that can affect gameplay as the baddies come down through the mazes. Defending units (towers) have different classes, and moves, and move with you to the next levels, and can be upgraded with some pretty cool improvement tree options.

Even upgraded and different weapons, armors and spells available, for the different classes.

IMO, someone should take this idea, which is a great one, and make it into a full blown, AAA title like Defense Grid.

8/10 stars

/edit - nevermind. I thought that was an intro post with links to the previous years' posts. Didn't realize it was your personal links. Spoilered to get it out of the way.
Actually, I'm glad you did this. I've often wished that each of these yearly lists began with links to each of the previous years. I'm very nostalgia-oriented, and I love to look back and see what we were doing in years past, and comparing those times with my real-life events. No idea why I do this.

Anyway, yeah, this is a placeholder for me I guess, as I haven't completed one single damn game this year.

It's a fun little game. I will probably back-burner it before getting into Ep2 someime around 2020.

Can't believe I actually finished something - Tomb Raider! Never got to the end of the first edition on the PS3 but completed the Definitive Edition on the PS4. Finally. Had to take a two month break after I rage quit near the end but then came back and finished it up in one session. :D

Last Sunday I finished the main storyline of AC4 Black Flag. Loved the game. I was only about 80% finished when I finished the main storyline. Now I need to see if I want to go back and finish up those last few elements. I'm definitely not going to chase down every treasure and fragment, but I would like to take out the last couple of forts and complete exploring all of the locations. Oh, and maybe get the last couple of stones for that Mayan thing.

Inescapable is complete. it is a very late 80s/early 90s Atari ST/Amiga-y Euro title. i can say the last fifth of the game was a slog, and i don't think i ever really liked it. ah well.
