All-time favorite games list (over 900 participants)

Post by Lordnine »

I thought this was fun. This site compiled the top 25 lists of over 900 participants to come up with an overall ranking for over 2000 games. How does your list compare?

Mine is here.

I've played 6 of the top 25 on the main list. My list is more in line with yours in that it is very heavily PC tilted. I did manage to get one console game in there, though. I'm sure as I think on it some more things will get shifted around and added/deleted. It's pretty close, though.

I’m happy to see a Rayman game on someone else’s list! Have you played Legends yet? I found it superior in every way to the (already great) original.

I really need a comparison test to determine my faves, ie which of these do you like better, X or Y? I forget too many games. Does one of those exist?

I played 22 of the top 25 and enjoyed most of them with a few small exceptions.

That's actually the only Rayman game I've ever played. I was just blown away by the quality of it, though. And it even has a very entertaining coop mode! I'll buy Legends in an instant when it comes to GOG.

Which might be never, but oh well.

Wow, I only played 18 of the top 50. A lot of those game I have no interest in. Well at least I know what games suit me best.

When did I become not a video game player?

Of the top 100 games of all time I played #50, Diablo II, 66, Planscape Torment, 78 Civ V (which I didn't like), 87 X Com Enemy Unknown, 92, Heroes of Might and Magic III, 98 Super Mario Bros.

6 total. Of those six, I put two in the my personal top games list (Diablo II and HoMM III)

When you stay hidden on STEAM, that's when.

I'd need to look at that Top 100 list. At one point, I would have considered myself a die-hard PC gamer but I have come to love my Xbox360. I don't play as many games as I used to, but it's still an important hobby to me.

top 100 games i have NOT played (that list was easier):
3 the last of us
15 chrono trigger
17 MGS3:snake eater
30 SSB Melee
34 Journey
25 SSB Brawl
53 SGT Persona 4
55 persona 4 golden
68 MGS4
70 Okami
73 banjo-kazooie
80 earthbound
82 xenoblade chronicle
88 battlefront 2

84 of the top 100 played. I'd say I still get some gamer cred.

Also, The Last of Us is the only game on that list I plan on playing.

Also it's weird to me to see a greatest video games of all time list, unqualified, that includes nothing pre PC and no Coin Ops in the top 100. Like those things are so historic as to have no value.

It also makes me want to go to an old fashioned arcade and see if I could find anything to enjoy at $.25 a pop.

I am not sure there is any coin-op I would add to the list. I can still enjoy Galaga, but I am not putting it up against Skyrim.

Do people still enjoy Super Mario Bros?

I'm not sure with the old coin ops. It's been so long since I played one but I'd love to find out if I'd enjoy Donkey Kong again or the Original Tron game or sitting down in Vector Based Star Trek hutch or even play in the Battle Tech Center again (not quite traditional coin op or arcade but [old man]back in late 80s/early 90s, I drove to Chicago twice and Toronto once just play in the Battle Tech Center[/old man]) or even Gauntlet or Track and Field or the like.

I'd not want to play on an emulator. I'd want to pay on a hutch with the big 'ole original buttons and joysticks and paddles and such and then figure out if I'd enjoy the game or not.

I've played 19 of the top 20 and beaten 13 of them. I'm not sure if that should make me feel good or like a loser?

Lordnine, thanks for posting about this website. It's pretty neat to have a living list that will change as people input their own lists. I just posted mine. Of the current top 25, I've played 14, but only one of them, Portal, is on my list.

The current list may be console-heavy, but it is credible, and I'm glad it has some older and lesser-known titles. Good gamers are participating!

I'm also glad I was able to input almost all of my favorites. The only one I couldn't input was Moria, which is understandable since it was a shareware or freeware roguelike from the 1980s.

From top 50: Have Played:
6. BioShock
7. Half-Life 2
18. Portal
36. Deus Ex
43. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

From top 50: Own but Haven't Played:
3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
8. Portal 2
11. Fallout 3
17. BioShock Infinite
30. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
48. Assassin's Creed II

I'm still pondering the excellence of gaming-year 1999 but now have an excellent backlog.

Seems like most of that list is the games people remember because they just came out. Curse the people of my generation! At least Half Life 2 is up there.
Where's System Shock 2 in the top 25? Planescape: Torment? Original Half Life? Civ 4? XCom Ufo Defense and Enemy Unknown? Bah! I should have been born an old man, the way I complain about these things.

You would have really hated the list when I first posted this then. I just checked it out and it has considerably more older titles now.

I don’t think it’s so much a list of only remembering recent titles, it’s that games tend to build on the successes of the previous generation. So with a few exceptions, once you put nostalgia aside, newer games do tend to be better than old ones. The exception would be genres that have mostly disappeared.

I cannot take this list seriously.
