Shadowrun 5ED.....

Post by TigerRider67 »

SO would anyone care to share their opinions of the new Shadowrun. I am thinking of picking it up for something to run opposite 5ed D&D. Would like to hear what you folks think of it.
Mostly how easy is it to run? How friendly is it for technically impaired folks. lol

SR5 cleans up a lot of the problems with 4e. Namely, too many broken builds possible, and wonky matrix stuff. It is a fairly simple system (attributes and skills determine number of dice to roll, 5 or 6 is success) made complicated by many opposed rolls and modifiers. That said, it is fairly easy to run a simplified version of the game as you get started. SR's strength is the mission hooks and the history of the world. The runs lead to a very different style of game than DND, with planning sessions often lasting as long as the run, and avoidance of combat often taking a priority.

However, the 5e book is horribly edited, and a disorganized mess. Get ready to look at three different pages in separate chapters to get a ruling on stuff. The Matrix, though, has been significantly improved, and the hacker is now almost required to be on the run with the team, hacking devices on site.

It's a great game, my favorite RPG, and requires a lot more PC smarts than many games, but it can be a bear to get into. Run it simple, buy hits for the NPC's, and disregard any knotty rule that slows down play or requires an extended test.

Be Bladerunner.

BTW the core rulebook is in the following bundle

There's a ton of Savage World stuff, maps, one of the core Battletech books, and a bunch of other stuff for $20. And it's for a good cause
