But anyways, part of the point of using the China Card was to guarantee at least a minimally successful operation. And, uh, minimally it was.

Yeah, I should have just put 3 points into Italy. Now we're hosed there. On the plus side, at least we don't have Chinese troops marching through Rome on parade.

Oh well. We're going to play U.N. Intervention along with "Suez Crisis" for a total of 3 ops. I guess the UN's handling of the Suez Crisis went over just fine with all the parties involved.

We'll use those ops to put down an influence point in West Germany (bringing us back to "control") and two influence in France. The 'no chaining' rule means that we can't just hop our influence over to Italy in a single action. Which is unfortunate.

Indeed. I guess in hindsight we should have just used Socialist governments to remove both Italy influence points and then used the China Card to put down three influence on Italy and 1 elsewhere. But then there would be the risk that you might successfully counter-coup, which would suck.

Anywho, since the next move is already pre-planned, and fairly obvious, we'll go ahead and do that. The Soviets will play Defectors (giving the U.S. 1 vp) for 2 ops. We'll use those two ops to place 2 influence on Italy, taking control of it.

The U.S. will play Comecon for ops before event.

The three ops will be used to put one into France (to finally gain control) and two into Spain/Portugal (thus also gaining control).

The soviets now get to place one influence in each of four non-US-controlled east European countries (so, any of them).

The Soviets will play Warsaw Pact Formed* for the event:
Warsaw Pact Formed* 3 USSR Early Remove all US influence from four countries in Eastern European, or add 5 USSR Influence in Eastern Europe, adding no more than 2 per country. Allows play of #21 NATO.
And will place 1 influence in Yugoslavia (for control), 2 influence in Bulgaria (for control) and 2 influence in Austria.

Well, at least we can play NATO now.

That being said, the next action by the United States is to play "Duck and Cover" for 3 ops.

This will be used to launch a coup in Syria. I presume that this implies large-scale carpet bombing.

Not that it matters given that U.S. special forces are too busy sampling the hukkah in Damascus, but as a heads up, I'm going to be out of town from Saturday to Thursday. I *should* have a reliable internet connection there, but I'm not certain.

One correction: there should be 3 USSR influence in Austria, not 2. We added 1 influence there when the U.S. played Comintern, and then 2 additional influence when we played the Warsaw Pact. So there should be 3 there total.

The United States will play "Vietnam Revolts", gaining the Soviets 2 influence in Vietnam. We will then immediately follow it up by using the 2 ops on a coup in Vietnam. One might think this is counterproductive, but our military-industrial complex needs a workout.

Oh, I guess, technically, all Soviet cards that use all their ops in south east asia gain +1 ops value.

I know, if only you guys had been running the country in the 60s, right? Though technically there may not have even been a "Vietnam War" - what probably happened is that Ho Chi Minh threw out the French and gained control of the country, followed by a U.S.-sponsored military coup that overthrew Ho Chi Minh in favor of a pro-U.S. dictator.

Actually, I believe that we will keep two cards for next turn, since one of the cards we played this turn was the China Card rather than a card that we drew.

In any event, the Soviets will play Sid Meier's Decolonization for the event, which allows us to add 1 Soviet influence in each of four different African and/or Southeast Asian countries.

We will then add 1 influence in each of: Thailand, Burma, Indonesia (taking control), and Sudan (taking control).
