As opposed to this:

(The (') signifies one time token, and (')(') would be two)

So I get the usual choice of placing 1 disk here, to gain 1 Info, or, to place 2 disks here at once to gain 3.

Normally, players may place a token on this spot to put a disk directly onto the Networking box(without paying information or money.) However, a player with a Remodeled Advertising spot can instead place two disks here, and put a token directly onto Print, which would normally cost 2$/2i.

During the Hiring phase at the beginning of the turn, players reduce their profit(income) to bring more employees(represented by 3 time disks) on-board. However, no employee's disks can be used on future turns if they don't get trained. A player with Remodeled Training can train a new hire for 1 time disk, instead of two. Handy.

Random Turn order for turn 1:

GreatToBeAlive
Newcastle
SpaceLord
El Guapo

Turn order on subsequent turns is hugely important, and players determine turn order via the Marketing space on the main board.

Turn 1:Hire Employees:

GladToBeAlive: It's now your option to hire an employee, based on this chart:

Image

The job market starts at the circled level: 5/5. If you hire a new worker, it would leave you with 2i/4$ for turn 1. In addition, it would cost you 2 of your 4 disks for turn 1 to Train this new worker. On turn 2, you would have 7 disks, and would receive 6$ in income instead of 9.

For each worker hired by any player, the next box(5/5) is used, then 6/6, etc.

We can pick any color, I take it, and the color has no relevance to the actual game play?

If so, in honor of my daughter I'll pick purple.

And...now I need to actually read the rules and figure out how to play this.

By the way, in the game rulebook, it shows that we get to see what type (Boom, Stable, Recession, Depression) the "current" Economic Forecast card is at the start of every turn. You don't actually turn the card over until the Reorganize phase, but you can at least see what general type it is. This surely has a big impact on the decisions we make each round.

Are we playing with the "Recommended 1st Game Economic Forecast Deck", as outlined in the rulebook? If so, then I assume the current Economic Forecast card is a Stable card.

The Economic Forecast(EF) Deck

Each turn, after products have been placed into Retail to be sold, the current EF card is flipped over.

The card has two relevant statistics:

Consumers:

This is the number of Consumers who wish to purchase a good from Retail. All goods in Retail will be purchased until this demand is met. This demand in a 4-player game works out like this:

Boom: 5 or 6 demand
Stable: 3, 4, or 5 demand
Recession: 1,2 or 3 demand
Depression: 0 or 1 demand

Unemployed:

This is the number of spots on the employment track that are dropped, making workers cheaper to hire:

Boom: 0 or 1
Stable: 2,2, or 1
Recession: 2,2,3
Depression: 4 or 4

Important Note:
There are two copies of every card, so it's not a certainty which of the cards will make an appearance in the game. I'll remind everyone of this when it becomes important.

Ok, that leaves you with I2 and $4. As long as you spend 2 disks this turn on the "Training" space, you will gain 3 more time disks for turn 2.

As GTBA has hired an employee, the Job Market track goes up by 1 spot, although it remains at i5/$5.

Before you, do, think of it this way.

There's essentially 4 things in the game:

Money
Information
Time(represented by time disks)
Popularity(granted from the Marketing space)

You need the first three to do most things in the game, and Popularity grants you first choice in many areas, and gives you and advantage when selling goods at Retail.

Right now, you have 7 information, 9 money, and 4 disks.

Going down to 2 Info and 4 money will be most of your first turn. Remember, it takes 2 disks to train a new employee, so that leaves you with just 1 or 2 actions on turn 1.

However, El Guapo, having an upgraded Training room, can pay just 1 disk to train a worker for the next turn.

If you do decide to train a worker, consider this:

You have the Emerging Technology benefit, meaning you get:

Image

Instead of:

Image

Everyone starts with 1 Supply cube. So, if you choose, you could discard that Supply cube to gain i2/$2, use another disk somewhere else, and then use your last two to train the new employee.

I will pass on hiring.

El Guapo, it's your turn to hire, it now costs i6/$6 to hire a trainee. Not as cheap. But remember, if you do hire, you'll be able to train your new employee with just 1 of your 4 time disks, because you have the Non-Profit bonus.

I'm sorry, I haven't had time yet to read the rules, which is on my to do list for this evening. So I have one employee currently. Is that employee already "trained"? My guess is yes, such that if I didn't hire a new person, my special ability would go to waste this turn.

Also, I can't see any of the charts in this thread - they're x'd out - which may be due to me being at work currently.

edit: oh wait, now I can see them. Weird.

Employees and Time Disks

Every company starts with 1 employee, and 9 income, as indicated on the player board. This is a special employee, the CEO. He provides 4 time disks, and all other employees provide 3.

Image

At the beginning of each turn, in popularity order, players can choose to hire employees according to the Job Market rate.

Employees hired are not immediately available for use, they must be trained first, by using the Training room action during the Plan Business phase, costing 1 or 2 time disks.

The main action phase begins when everyone passes on hiring workers.

Everyone should realize two things now:

Hiring workers will be cheaper next turn, especially for those that are ranked highly in Popularity.
Also, the more disks available now, the better one's chances of getting goods into the Retail outlets, which is the primary way to earn money in the game. Notice that turns 1 and 2 are Stable, but things turn into a recession for 3 and 4.

I tell you what, it would be best if we played an example round.

Example Round

We'll play this first round and possibly part of the 2nd as an example. I'll briefly discuss the implications of certain moves. Partially, this is to prevent an "oh crap" moment on a later action, which has happened all three times I've taught the game.

All right, all 4 players have completed the first round of hiring. Now, it technically goes back to GTBA, and since he can't afford to hire a 2nd employee, and neither can El Guapo or Newcastle, then the hiring phase is over.

Set Office/City Agenda Details

See the image above as a guide to the game schedule.

A player's "Office" is his personal player board. An example of a un-upgraded player board space is here:

Image

From left to right, top to bottom:

Assembly: Place 3 disks here to gain a Supply cube. Supply cubes are used for two things: To sell at Retail, and to discard as a Research action for Info or Money. Each player starts with a Supply cube in their Supply Closet.

Supply Closet(SC): This location is not where time disks can be placed, it is simply where one stores their Supply cubes. If you gain a Supply cube, and have nowhere to place it, it is just discarded. A Remodeled SC can hold two Supply

Training: As mentioned earlier, when you have a new employee, during the Schedule phase, you may place 2 time disks here to train the employees so you get those 3 disks for the next turn

Research and Training: Place 1 time disk and discard a Supply cube to gain i3

Meeting Room: Place a time disk here to gain i1.

Advertising: Place 1 disk here to put a disk from your general “pile” onto the Advertising space on the City Marketing board. The next post will be a Marketing refresher, taken from the signup thread.

Marketing Example:

Assume this is the state of the Marketing Firm after a Schedule Business phase:

Image

During the Schedule Business phase, Yellow and Black had both used their Advertising spots on their player board to place 1 Time disk each onto the Networking Space, and Blue had used a Remodeled Advertising space to place a disk directly onto Print.

In addition, Blue and Black had each paid a total of 2/2 to place a disk onto this track, and Yellow paid 1/1.

During "Evaluate Marketing", the players then shift their disks up onto the 3 spaces, beginning with Blue in the 5th spot.

1. Blue elects to move their disk from spot 5 onto Broadcast, at a cost of 2/2.
2. Black elects to place their disk from 4 onto Networking, for free. They then add another disk from their supply.
3. Blue moves their disk from 3 onto Print for 1/1
4. Yellow chooses to pay nothing for their disk on 2, and gets two more disks onto Networking.
5. Finally, Black chooses to follow suit and place their disk onto Networking as well, gaining a second for free.

Here's the board after the decisions have been made:

Image

Resolving once again from left to right:

Since Blue has a single disk in Broadcast, blue moves up 2 spaces in Popularity: 1 for having a disk, and a 2nd for the most. He removes the disk.
In Print, Blue has two disks as well. He removes both disks once again, and gains 2 Pop.
In Networking, both Black and Yellow have at least 3 disks. Black has the most, with 5. Because the 5th disk did NOT give Black a Pop increase, it remains. Black removes 4 disks, and Yellow removes 3.

This leaves one Black disk remaining for the next turn.

The totals for the turn:

Blue: +4 Pop
Black: +2 Pop
Yellow: +1 Pop

Tot
al Money/Info spent(not including the Time disks spent earlier on the player boards):
Blue: 5/5
Black: 2/2
Yellow: 1/1

FWIW, I read the rules, but I don't really know what I'm doing either. I suppose my line of thinking in deciding to hire an employee was that although it'll cost me 2 time disks this turn, I don't want to be stuck at 4 per turn forever, so spending a little bit of time/money/info now to get more time disks next turn is an investment of sorts. I have no idea if it will actually pay off or not.
