I have a vague recollection that everyone in 5th or 6th gear needs to roll when someone rolls engine damage. Is that true, or am I making that up?

Going back to the first post, it's only necessary to roll for engine damage if you max out your roll in 5th or 6th gear.

Only a max roll triggers the damage roll, but if one person hits max, then everyone in fifth or sixth has to roll as well as the person who rolled max. That's not in the OP, I believe, but it came up a few pages back.

The idea, I think, is that running your engine at 5th or 6th gear inherently strains the engine and involves some sort of risk, and that it's running at those gears, as opposed to going the max distance in those gears, that creates the risk. The mechanism (one person rolling max) is I think just an effort at calibrating the probability of damage at the level that the game designers want.
