The Guild 2- The Renaissance

Postby tgb » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:20 pm

Out today at GamersGate for $20. The trailer says "Based on the wishes of our community". Does that mean it's not a non-functioning POS like Guild 2?

I liked the first, got burned on the second, but won't take the bullet on this one.

I like the first for about six hours before realizing there wasn't much of a game there. Six hours of discovery wouldn't have been bad, except I paid $40 for the game and $40 is too much for six hours of entertainment. If I had never played before and expected as much entertainment from this game as I got from discovering the original then I'd pay ten bucks for it, no more. Having played the first, I'd try this one free.

It's available from Steam, Impulse, and direct from JoWood for $2 less, which is almost my "what the hell" point. Positive feedback so far on the official forum, but I think Day One buyers are going to tend to be fanboys anyway.

I think I'll try to see what the reviewers in Germany has to say (I gather it's been out there for a while)

You mean after the first Guild game, the community didn't wish the developer would take up another line of work? Perhaps something in the food service sector?

Well, I suppose I kind of liked the developers well enough in that I went drinking with them once? A bunch of affable German guys who couldn't seem to understand why the Polish hated them so much...

I bought the "gold" version of their game, and it was terrible.

So has someone bought it yet? And played it? No, well? Surely one of OO's 2,000 minions must have done so! If not, what am I bringing you fish and captives for?

I thought it was clear from my previous post that I had.

Not a lot different than The Guild II, except it's not prone to CTD's every five minutes. A few new maps, professions, and titles you can hold, plus "arranged marriages", which allow you to skip the whole courtship thing for a price.

The most interesting-sounding new profession, gravedigger, turned out to be a disappointment, since it's the same as alchemist but using bones and skulls as ingredients.

Yeah I was actually playing TG2: Sovereign Edition for a while a few months back. I think they really worked out the kinks and there is some very solid fun in there finally. Its leagues ahead of the POS that it was at release. YMMV.

Here's a fun bug I encountered this morning -

The woman I was courting this morning died - at least I assume she did (I never got a message about it). Anyway, she had been sick shortly before, and eventually her picture under "Important Persons" was replaced by a skull & crossbones, and she was nowhere to be found on the map. Yet I kept getting messages saying she was feeling neglected, and I couldn't court anyone else until I broke up with her.

Of course, this could have something to do with my career as a gravedigger, and could be WAD.

I'm trying out the demo today, I finished the demo tutorial last night. Steam or Gamers Gate has a discount on TG2, Renaissance this weekend. The only issue is my back is all out of wack and I dont know how much I can sit at a computer today, but if I like it, maybe we can do some multiplayer this week?

Thanks, but I'm a single-player kind of guy, except for the occasional PBEM of a tbs. If you like the demo, get the original instead of Renaissance. People are finding a lot of bugs popping up. I'm kind of sorry I didn't hold off, but I figured that since they got the original working properly, this would as well.

Don't buy the 'original'. The best copy prior to this release was the Pirates of the Burning Seas edition. That's the version that the sovereign mod works on too.

Would you mind going into more detail about that version? I loved the guild 1 (gold version) warts and all, but the original sequel was ... disappointing for me to say the least.

The brief steam description doesn't give me enough information, and I don't think you can really even bother paying attention to metascores of niche games like this as they simply wouldnt appeal to most mainstream reviewers even if they were bug-free.

JoWood released a quick-fix patch this morning for the most grievous issues. I started a new game, and have not run into any problems so far.

Now can a more experienced player tell me - a new Pesthouse opened across the road from mine. How can I find out who the owner his so I can "persuade" him it might be better to move into a new line of business?

Is this one of those standalone expansions that has everything in it or do you have to buy everything? Just wondering...

Yeah, it's stand alone.

You've probably figured it out by now, but I'm pretty sure there's a button to press to get more information about a dwelling somewhere, but it's been too long since I've played to remember for sure. Pretty sure there's a way to do it though.

Yeah, I have figured that out, thanks.

Turns out the quick-fix introduced a new major bug - characters don't gain exp. Back to the drawing board, I guess.
