Neverwinter, Hordes of the Underdark

Post by Head »

I just installed Hordes late last night. Created my character. Decided to start from the very beginning with the original NWN campaign. The first new thing I noticed was "ROBES". Wow, magic user or cleric robes, finally. What else is new that's cool?

Frankenstein?

I don't know, but I'd like to hear. I really enjoyed the original but never got around to picking up the expansion. I've been longing for an RPG fix, though, and might really enjoy another ride with NWN.

So... what else is new that's cool? ;)

Where's Icebear when you need him?

Alright... here goes!

- Epic levels- take your character up to level 40.
- Epic feats to go with it.
- More prestige classes. Weapon Master, Champion of Torm, Shifter, Dwarven Defender, Dragon Disciple, Pale Master...
- Skies have been implemented.
- More tilesets, Underdark, Beholder cave, one more I think.
- More heads for your character
- A few more voices.
- Multiple Henchman. You can now have two.
- New weapons- Whip and Dwarven Axe

That's just off the top of my head.

Do all those new things work in the original NWN or just the new expansion?

BTW.... where the heck is icebear? Has he been posting here at OO yet?

Most of it yeah. Can't do multiple henchmen from what I remember.

I just created a level 15 Monk character for Hordes but I haven't really started playing yet. I've heard great things.

I just got the Gold Edition from Target for $9.98. I'm waiting to play Morrowind first though.

If you just got it, then I suggest playing through the OC. But be warned, the general consensus is that the OC is quite inferior to the other campaigns. But I liked it.

Characters from the OC turn up in HOTU. And before you ask, no... not THAT character.

Psssh screw the OC. What your supposed to do is play through SoU and then port your character into HotU. There are a couple of modules designed to get your character high enough for it too.

Can you use you same character from the OC in HOTU or do you have to just re-create him?

Well you CAN, but the character needs to be level 15.

HOTU is meant to be played with your character from SoU.

IIRC, doesn't it level you up at the start if you aren't high enough? Been a while since I played it. Great game though, and it gets better as it goes along.
End of line.

Yes it does. But in the OC you normally get your character to level 16/17.

For the last week or so I've tried to get into HoTU but I got turned off very early in the first level of the dungeon. Seemed far too mazy and portal-happy.

I also didn't really care for the way I started out at level 15 with tons of free equpiment and combat moves available right at the outset. I guess I could buy Shadows of Urdentide and start from there but I just don't think I like this NWN D&D game engine.

The OC took me four tries spread out over two years to finish. That is four tries to sit down and finish the same play-through, not four seperate attempts. Each time I would get through a chapter or two, get mindlessly bored, and quit. I'd keep my saves and start again.

Unless you are desperate, avoid the original campaign. Start Shadows, play it through, and move your character on to HotU. There are even a couple of 'bridge' scenarios out there that serve to both fill in the events between the two and bump your character up two or three levels to the right starting level for HotU.

I don't know why everyone is always saying that its bad. I had fun with it, maybe its the character you choose. I went though with a Paladin/Thief  and it was pretty fun.

I haven't really started HoTU because I can't decide on a character to use.

Right now I'm debating between a human monk, elf cleric, dwarf fighter, elf ranger/assasin.

I think I'll probably run through as an elf cleric, then the human monk, then the dwarf fighter. This will take about thirty years to do.
