If it's a video game it goes here.

UT2004 - still played around here?

Post by marcusjm »

I noticed that there is a dedicated server so I was curious.

What mods are the most popular (or must haves)? I remember Strike Force for UT which was pretty good.is it still around?

What game modes are the most popular? In UT I allways prefered Assault maps but they were so few.

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if Zack still maintains that server, but it has been a long time since I've seen anybody on it. The most popular mode when it was active was Insta-Gib. 1-on-1 tornaments, CTF, all Insta-Gib.

I'm not sure when the next UT is slated for release, but I would suspect that all of the other UT games just aren't played that much anymore. Everyone seems to be on GuildWars/WoW/BF2/BF2142 lately. At least, that's what I gather from the threads here.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

I bet you can find people playing it. While it wont have the numbers of newer games there are probably still a good amount of servers/players at least for the main game. What would be harder to find is mods but there will probably be a few people playing them unless the mod was bad.

I play JointOps MP and it still has populated/full servers to play on and many have moved on from it.

If I had UT2K4 still installed I would check. Might have to reinstall it now.

EDIT: Couldnt resist so reinstalled it (Removed it before to get more HD space but have a bigger drive now). Still tons of Onslaught servers. I didnt notice many other kinds though but only started up the game for a minute.

EDIT2: Im an idiot. Didnt realize ONS was the default game in the filter. Tons of Assault and CTF too. Thats all I looked at so far.

there's no faster way to make a game more undesireable to play than by putting the current year in the title ;)

I would play if you were doing Alien Swarm. One of my favorite games. EVER.

Glad to hear someone's still playing this. I loved it and didn't get to play as much as I wanted. I especially liked Onslaught, Assault CTF and Bombing Run games. I'm pretty meh on plain ol' deathmatch.

I just reinstalled it. I had a few good games, where I was with similarly skilled people. Then I tried a game instagib with people a little better than me. What I mean by that is, take me for example (10 years of those games, medium skill) and I go against a newbie who has never played in his life and the result will be less catastrophic than the game in which I was owned in all the possible bodily holes. I had the time to shoot 3 times before being gibbed by a guy 400m farther. A gang of virtual professional snipers around me... Then I got back to the "single player" part, just for fun and for training.

One of my first rounds of instagib I won on Zaxxons server. Mainly because I would pick them off as they dueled someone else. After that I was pretty much slaughtered especially by anyone with half a talent at UT dodging, which Im horrible at. Good times anyways though.

Yep, the server's still up and running. I've tried a couple of 'revival' nights over the past year or so, but never manage to get more than a couple people on. I think this train's left the station until UT2007, at least on OO.

If I'm wrong and a bunch of people want to get together for an evening of fraggage, I'm definitely in, though, and so is my stats-tracking server.

Ptity that games are so shortlived. It's amazing really how Counter Strike has managed to keep a consistent fanbase for almost 10 years now.

More games should be like that.

Per the discussion in the New Unreal Tournament thread, I've set up a UT2004 server with stats logging. Stats are here. Server is 174.16.220.160, and the game join password is 'cthulhu.' Maybe we can set some scheduled games up. Anyone interested?

Awesome...would love to join in soon. Now that I've found my copy, the new catch is finding a time to play. My fiancé moved into my apartment a while back while our house is being built, and I lost my office. This means that my gaming PC is temporarily in the bedroom...not conducive to late-night gaming. This could be tricky...

installing now. i forgot that the installation media is on CDs and not DVDs... why did it take so long for PC game manufacturers to switch over? do i have to install this in XP compatibility mode?

UPDATE: "Please enter the 20-digit CD key found printed on the back of your manual. Type the CD key exactly as it appears..." uhhh ... do i still have the manual for this??

DOUBLE UPDATE: ...it's under the Play disc CD tray. : /

TRIPLE UPDATE: were installers really this primitive-looking in 2004?? well, i guess my answer is they were still distributing games on CDs... and after the disc-swapping, i still have to install the community packs... people re-buying this on Steam: enjoy your modern-day conveniences.

UPDATING SPREE: i found "Zaxxon's UT 2004 v1.1" DVD-R! dated 04/04/05. also a CD-R i had made with "Maps + Packs + Editor". might even install this on my work Linux laptop, since there's a client for it.

I know that I still have my disc, but I'm pretty sure it's packed away...maybe in our storage unit. If I can find it around home, I'll try to get it uploaded somewhere.

I see Arcanis has successfully joined a match, so it looks like the server is indeed working. Would tomorrow night work for anyone for some quick fraggage? Say, 10 PM Eastern?

I'll be there.

Is there VOIP or do we need to use the mumble server my friend runs?

On the Buddies or Internet tab, right-click and Open IP, then enter the server's IP. You can then right-click the server and add it as a favorite.

IP is 174.16.220.160, password cthulhu.

Community Bonus Packs are also loaded on the server. If you pre-install them you won't have to wait for the server to send you maps.

I don't know that I can request a file via Dropbox. I think I would need your email in order to give you upload access.
