Chapter 5: Hey Meester, Can You Help Me Find My Seester?

From the journal of Carlos Vargas, Wanderer, 2 December 2241:

"I wander through desert looking for someone to help me free Vic or find holy 13, but I find only sand of loneliness. I go back to Klamath, sell some junk to have 350 dollar again, and see Sulik. I pray to tribal god Killap Heaven Bear that he make Sulik remember past conversation about paying off debt. Then I talk to Sulik and he remember!

Image

"I pay Sulik 350 dollar for the debt and he join me. I will help Sulik find his seester, who he say is somewhere south.

"Sulik had leather chaqueta, which he give me. I put it on for protección. I look like real piola now, no?

Image

"We walk south, west, east, all around looking for seester. We had fight with cucarachas. I fought cucarachas before, but these were BIG cucarachas! You could ride them like burro. I think maybe these are smart cucarachas because they so big, so I try to impress them with my leather chaqueta and cool talk.

Image

"But they so stupid that they hit themselves with own stinger. We win fight, but one of stinger hit me and make me feel sick. Good thing I had leche de cucaracha, so I drink it and feel better.

"Later we find some slaver cholos trying to capture slaves. Sulik hate slaver, so he join fight right away. Everybody was missing a lot. Sulik dropped his sledgehammer and never find it again. One of the slaves fell down and three slavers came to beat him.

Image

"The slave was almost muerto. I wanted to use a stimpaquete on him so he would survive, but stimpaquetes are very expensive. So I fight the slavers instead. Gracias a Dios, Sulik and me was able to save all the slaves and kill all the slavers.

"After that, we go in cave nearby, but I stopped when I saw what was in it:

Image

"Chupacabras!! They real?? We leave right a-quick.

"We then meet some bootleggers.

Image

"Sulik has borracho problem, so I make sure he stay away while I sell them my booze.

"Then we see a fight between cucarachas and cannibals. Hmm, who to help? Cucarachas hurt people, but they just animals. Cannibals eat people, so they are mean. We help the cucarachas kill the cannibals. We hope that this would make the cucarachas our friend, but they attack us instead so we had to kill them too. Carlos afraid world peace is just a dream.

"Then we meet a bunch of wilders. Me not know what wilder is, but me think they have worst English I ever see.

Image

"Who need pistola when you have manos de muerte?

Image

"All this walking and fighting and no sign of Sulik seester. We about to give up, then we find another town.

Image

"A city named Unknown?! Maybe this is the seester city of Uncertain, Texas. So Sulik seester maybe there! We find out soon."

Chapter 6: The Mex-Files

From the journal of Carlos Vargas, Wanderer, 12 December 2241:

"It turn out that this city not name Unknown; it name Redding. It is mining town, but miners stay in bars and casinos, not working. They addicted to drogas, and not say much to strangers like yo. Things here not as bad as Den, but me not understand why everyone so quiet.

"Sulik y yo go into casino and try to use machine, but it different from the ones in Den. Its directions are all in English, so I no can get it to work.

Image

"I then try to play game named craps. Is complicated game which I not comprendo.

Image

"Even though I no could gamble here, I sold some stuff for dinero at the casino desk.

"We leave and go into bar called Malamute Saloon. The cerveza here must be very good, is so expensive!

Image

"We visit local hospital. We not hurt, but wanted to know whether seester ever beed there. We wanted to talk with doctor, but he was arguing with his cleaning man, Ratt.

Image

Image

"We then visit police station to file meesing seester report. Sheriff compare me to my favorite food!

Image

"He also let me take guns from locker. Nice sheriff. I give the guns (a shotgun and hunting rifle) to Sulik, since I no know how to shoot good.

"We talk with people in the mine offices, but they say us nothing. If Sulik seester is in Redding, no one wants us to find her. Maybe she in mine?

"We went into another part of town that had entrance to mine. It was very messy and full of ratoncitos. No wonder miners not want to go to work. My janitor instinct took over and I began cleaning. Even the smallest ratoncitos were tough because they were mutantes.

Image

"We clear a way to the mine entrance and take the elevator down. Right when the elevator door opened, I got attacked by an OCTOPUS!

Image

"It strong and hurt me bad. It Strong Bad! Sulik pulled me back into elevator and we go right back up before octopus kill me muerto.

"I spend several days in town resting, wondering how octopus can be walking on ground. Then I realize that octopus must be an ALIEN, from outer planet in the space! Why aliens are here, and why they take Sulik seester? They must be working with la migra to kidnap and deport humans so that more aliens can live here. La migra probably watching the people in town and making sure they not tell anyone about the aliens. That's why no one talk to us. Hijo de vaca con dos cabezas!

"We went to mining camp and try to blend in. Maybe we learn something from the miners. They have big animal fighting cage and bet on the fights. I placed a bet with the betting lady.

Image

"But when done resting days later, I go back and the betting lady make the same offer. She not tell me whether my bet win or lost. Maybe I not understand how game work. I have, how you say, 'language burier.'

"Sulik y yo returned to the mines, fresh and ready to fight. But we entered a different way to catch the aliens surprised: through the town well. Octopus still too strong for us.

Image

"None of my attack even do any damage. We decided to leave Redding because we can do no good there, but we'll be back. After Carlos gets more levels, he be ready to rescue Sulik seester and free Redding from its octopus overlords!"

Chapter 7: Quest for Pointy Things (*KILLAP*)

From the journal of Carlos Vargas, Wanderer, 20 February 2042, Primitive Tribe:

"Sulik y yo leave Redding and travel straight west. We almost reach western shore when we discover another unknown area.

Image

"We see many trees with a few paths cut through for walking, stone monuments and skull poles here and there. It look like tribal area! Then I see very bad thing.

Image

"We fight off ratoncitos so we could get better look at la niña muerta. Very sad.

Image

"Not know who would do this to una niña. I feel duty to help her if can.

"We take path north and find the Primitive Tribe. Sulik tell me this is his tribe, then go off on his own.

Image

"Carlos pleased that he bring Sulik home. Hope Sulik finds out about his seester.

"I not so welcome, though.

Image

"I look for healer and enter a tent that has person in it. He even more loco than Hakunin back in Arroyo.

Image

"I look for tribe's elder. He in another tent, looking very sick. His guard stand in tent hole and not let me in to talk to elder.

Image

"I go to another tent and find tribe's best warrior there. Finally, someone I can talk to. We have good talk, luchador a luchador.

Image

"Pollo diablo! I had many knifes and spears before I come here, but I sold them for dinero. Now I gotta collect them all over again. But I start by finding a knife in shelf right behind warrior.

"I head back for Arroyo. Sulik stay behind with tribe. Even though I got deported from Arroyo, maybe they not recognize me in leather jacket. Along way, met nice hermit.

Image

"Buyed marijuana from him. Marijuana better and cheaper than stimpaquetes, though it make Carlos wanna eat much iguana-on-a-steeck later.

"I sneak back into Arroyo, no problema. I had some broc flower and xander root so that Hakunin would make them into marijuana for me. But he not do that anymore. He only tell me time running out to get HECK. Maybe he right. Should focus on getting HECK, not getting high. La abuela say something similar. I found another knife in her hut.

"Nothing new in Arroyo. At least it still better off than Primitive Tribe. I then go to Klamath to try again to get into Vic's shack and get his radio. This time I had a better lockpick, the loud and messy kind.

Image

"I get the radio and head to Den, where Vic still a slave. Along the way, I run into big fight between banditos, trappers and merchants.

Image

"I not get involved in fight. Fighting anyone here will not help Arroyo or Primitive Tribe. I just hang around and wait for people to drop their knifes and spears, which they do a lot. The banditos win the fight easily. I loot from los muertos and try to leave, but then the banditos surround me!

Image

"I was preparing to go to el Cielo when one of the banditos accidentally hit another bandito, making him fall and letting me escape.

"I make it to Den and talk to Vic, showing him his radio.

Image

"I talk to Metzger, but I not know how to say in English to ask him to let Vic go.

Image

"But I able to trade with him. I give him guns and bullets for knifes and spears. I now have all pointy things Primitive Tribe need.

"Look like I gotta fight Metzger and his mans to get Vic out, but I no can do this without Sulik (or maybe even with Sulik). So I leave Vic in Den again and head back to Primitive Tribe. Along the way, I win some fights and becomes Level 6. I not take perk at Level 3, so now I choose two perk: Bonus Move twice. I put puntos de skill in Fight Without Gardening Tool, Fight With Gardening Tool, and Speak The English Good.

Image

"I level up just in time, because I then meet very angry man again: Kaga! What this loco want?

Image

"This time he have shotgun, while I still have spear. Fight was tougher this time. I had to use marijuana three times since shotgun bullet hurt so bad. But Kaga not as good with shotgun as I am with los manos.

Image

Image

Image

"Hope he not bother me again for long time.

"In Primitive Tribe, I show pointy things to warrior friend.

Image

"Maybe now others here treat me nice. I try to see elder again. Elder's guard nice to me.

Image

"But he still not move aside to let me in. He just stand there.

Image

"What Carlos can do to get past guard? Maybe if I make offering of empanada de morcilla to Killap Heaven Bear, way will be open."

I think he's playing the the fan made mod/patch. It fixes a lot with the game, and adds some areas that were originally planned but no included in the game. You can't find this tribe in the original game.

Yes, Fallout works just fine under Vista. You might run into some minor problems, but there are several threads over at the No Mutants Allowed forum to help in this matter.

Chapter 8: Ghost, Dog-Killer

From the journal of Carlos Vargas, Wanderer, 5 April 2242, Modoc:

"The thing about empanada ritual is you gotta do it at midnight. That the only time when a god will come to accept it. So I keep the morcilla cooking and wait till exactly midnight to fold over the empanada. That's when, ayudame Dios mio, la vi otra fantasma!

Image

Image

"This was la niña muerta that we seed outside tribe. She was kill by 'metal guy with light gun,' which sound like people in steel pantalones. La migra is still murdering people. This worry me mucho.

"But for now time to take care of la niña. I goed into tent to talk with loco healer. Poor guy look like he seed a ghost. Heh, that pretty funny chiste, no?

Image

"I should get Ghost Whisperer perk.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

"Adios, Karla. Healer went back in tent to give me something. Finally, I get pay for doing yob.

Image

"But the pay not the important thing. I was so busy collecting pointy things that I forgot about Karla. Doing the empanada ritual reminded me she needed help, and taught me to think of others more. I thank Killap Heaven Bear for this lesson.

"Killap made the way open, and guard step aside so I could talk to elder.

Image

"Now we know Metzger probably has seester. Sulik join me again and we go to Den to scope out slaver place. Metzger has 12 mans helping him; that too much for 2 to fight. I promise Sulik I help him rescue seester; we come back when ready, but now his turn to help me find HECK. He agree.

"We go east of Den for a while, then find a small town.

Image

"Town name Modoc. Has farms, but they not doing too well. Crops dying. Man name Grisham give us yob.

Image

"We go to field where vacas are. Big pack of perros came to kill vacas.

Image

"I use tacotics to punch every perro so it attack me instead of vacas. This trick work. The problem with doing this is, when you got 10 perros attacking you, you got a problem.

Image

"I use all 7 bag of marijuana to stay alive. 7 bag! I no care who you are, if you use 7 bag of marijuana while protecting vacas con dos cabezas from perros in the middle of the night, you not gonna feel right mañana.

"Fight was tough, but we kill all the perros and loss only one vaca. Back in town, we see another vaca that was hurt and no could walk. I want to help it, but my Doctor skill is way too really low.

Image

"We see Grisham for pay.

Image

"900 dollar is mucho dinero, but we too tired from figting perros to go spend it. We look for room in Grisham's place to sleep in. We met una mina muy linda.

Image

Image

"Language burier again causes misunderstanding. If I only speaked English gooder, who knows what coulda happen?

"Bueno, Sulik y yo probably gonna sleep over by Bess to make sure she okay. Modoc seem to be nice place, and Bess is nice vaca, so we'll sleep good. Buenas noches, amigos."

Chapter 9: Loco in the Sky with Dynamite

From the journal of Carlos Vargas, Defender, 6 April 2242, Modoc:

"In la mañana, we get up and find place to eat.

Image

"I try to order huevos rancheros. What I get is more like huevos verdes con jamón, but is still good. It restore all my puntos de hit.

Image

"We then look around town for a yob. We ask for información in Tannery, but they treat us strange there.

Image

Image

"We find yob with un viejo named Farrel.

Image

"I use spiked knuckles and Sulik use hardening tool to kill ratoncitos in the harden. It not hard yob, but I got bited on foot.

Image

"I found funny bones.

Image

"When the harden was clear, we go back to Señor Farrel for pay.

Image

Image

"I am used to some abuse because of how I talk bad English, but this is go too far. I want to turn Señor Farrel into chimichanga and feed him to Sulik. But the bite on foot very itchy, so I go to el baño to put medicine on it. That when I notice another yob opportunity.

Image

"I climb ladder down. This place gonna take a long time to clean.

Image

"My janitor instinct tell me it not safe to work in small space fill with gas. I need to make ventilación. Good thing I find place for it.

Image

"I use bomba steeck to make hole. But I not as good with bomba as I am with cleaning. I think I use too much, because soon Sulik y yo are outside where baño used to be.

Image

"I never so close to el Cielo before. We both hurt real bad. Sulik has broken leg, I has broken arm. I has Doctor's Bag, but my Doctor skill is still too really low. We not know where to find good doctor. We ignore the pain and go back underground to finish yob. At least it safe to work there now. That what I thought, but I wrong.

"There was tunnel where rocks used to be. We go in tunnel and find a big ratota who come after us! I quickly use my stimpaquetes--only 2 left--to heal as much as I can and ask Sulik for help. But Sulik not wanna fight with broken leg.

Image

"I punch as hard and fast as I can with my good arm, but I keep missing. Ratota do the same, except he not miss. Finally, with only 2 puntos de hit left, I do one last punch.

Image

"Working in Modoc is muy peligroso! I really need more huevos verdes con jamón, so I go back up and head to Rose's. That when I notice what a big mess my bomba steeck made of entire town.

Image

Image

"I was afraid they deport me or make me clean up everything without pay. I go speak with town jefe.

Image

"That not sound so bad. It like being deported, but I can come back. Doing this is least I can do for mess I made, and I will finally get información about HECK.

"I no like the sound of 'ghost farm,' though. I not know if I can handle more fantasmas. Hope he just kidding."

Chapter 10: No Me Ghoulsta

From the journal of Carlos Vargas, Defender, 20 April 2242, Gecko:

"As Modoc town jefe ask us to do, we go to Ghost Farm to see what bad thing happen there.

Image

"We get there and have a look around. Hmm.

Image

"I no see what the problem is. Look like ordinary tribal holiday to me. But then where are the tribal people? Maybe they out gathering food for fiesta or practicing dance moves. We hang around and wait for them. I read some books to pass time.

"Then night come, and I find out why place is call Ghost Farm.

"Because it is a farm.

Image

"CON FANTASMAS!!! No, wait, these not fantasmas. They not float, they walk around, stepping on the weeds. You can smell them. They worse than fantasmas, they are ZOMBIS!!!

"We not know what to do. But before long, some normal guys came up to us. They not zombis, but they not look like friends, either. Were they gonna help us or kill us?

Image

"Who is Vegeir? We not know what they talking about. We look for place to hide from the zombis and suddenly fall through the ground.

Image

"There were more mean-looking guys there. I try to ask them where we are ('¿Dónde estamos?'), but I was stun from the fall (I fell on my broken arm) and it come out wrong.

Image

"They took us to Señor Vegeir.

Image

Image

Image

"We went back to Modoc and gave Vegeir's message to the town jefe.

Image

"Another pendejo. World outside of Arroyo is full of them. Bueno, if there is one place HECK might be, it be in town named Hecko.

"So we go there.

Image

"Everyone in Hecko look like the 'zombis' in Ghost Farm, but they real. They are called ghouls, and have some kinda skin disease. They smell like bad flan. Carlos not afraid of them.

"I meet Harold and Lenny, but they not say much.

Image

Image

"They coulda been nicer.

"The ghouls here have a big power plant. Looks like they trying to make great atomic power.

Image

"We go inside and have a look around. It very hot inside. I think ghouls must be uncomfortable. I get near reactor and see a red wheel that my janitor instinct tells me controls the coolant. If I turn it, maybe plant will be cooler.

Image

"But I would have to walk close to the reactor to turn it, and I no wanna do that. I try to use computer to turn it, but it look like computer overheating, too.

Image

"Maybe I come back later to help ghouls with their problem. But I not like the ghouls much. They not help me find HECK. I talk with Skeeter, a mechanic ghoul, and he is meanest of all.

Image

"I decide I going to play a little trick on Skeeter, just like tricks we played on each other back in Arroyo growing up. Then he see who stupid. I take out a firecracker and put it behind Skeeter. Gonna scare him real good when it pops!

Image

Image

"Heh heh heh ...

Image

"That louder than I expected!

Image

"Hey, where he go? He musta got so scared that he ran away. He run so fast he left some skin behind. He also leave behind a fuel cell controller. I take it, it could be handy.

"We look everywhere for HECK, but it ain't here. Time to leave this town. Maybe ghouls will remember my funny trick and treat me better next time I come here. For now, we wander."

No, just some weirdo named Cornelius in back. Why, what is Sam a reference to?
Since Sam I Am doesn't like Green Eggs and Ham, I figured maybe he could be the waiter :)

I kept thinking it was a Sam Becket reference from that episode of Quantum Leap where he's in the heavenly diner.

I see, but I believe Sam was the evangelist rather than the skeptic.

Chapter 10: No Me Ghoulsta => "No me gusta" => I don't like it. :P

Chapter 11: Mass Deportation (*KILLAP*)

From the journal of Carlos Vargas, Defender, 29 September 2242, Arroyo:

"Sulik y yo travel north of Hecko and find humansity there.

Image

"This place called Abbey. It look like a church, and people seem happies there.

Image

"There was a graveyard in front. The name on one cross sounded familiar, make me think of the octopus overlords we saw in Redding for some reason.

Image

"Place very quiet, but I see things that not make sense to me.

Image

"Inside church, man name Brother Matthew start giving long, rhymey speech about importance of books.

Image

"I try listen, because I know it important. But it kinda boring, too. I feel asleep. I even started drooling, and when I start drooling it hard for me to stop.

"When sermon was over, I left some money in the poor box and explored the rest of Abbey. There was a doctor office there. I talk to Doctor Jack to see if he can fix my arm and Sulik leg, but I was still drooling.

Image

Image

Image

"Other people in church were copying books to computer. I try help.

Image

"I find good books that they let me take. A couple of medical books, an electronics book. Don't know much about a science book. Maybe I sell it. I also find a technical repair manual on the 'T-51b Power Armor,' whatever that is.

"On second floor, I meet nun who ask me for favor.

Image

"I go down to BASEMENT. Along way, I found purple robe. Tag on robe says, "Children of the Cathedral." Hmm, who they? I put it on, maybe it help me fit in here.

"I find Max working in BASEMENT.

Image

"I look around and find another purple robe for Sulik to wear. I also find this:

Image

"This could help me hide from la migra if they catch up with me.

"BASEMENT was different from rest of church. It was messy and dangerous, so we start cleaning. There were ratoncitos crawling around. Sulik used his bad leg as excuse to not fight. Come on, Sulik, they just ratoncitos!

Image

"Deeper in BASEMENT, we run into some cucarachas. Sulik still not wanna fight. I continue to clean basement on my own until I saw...

Image

"A chupacabra! We run away into desert and go on siesta until we got back all our puntos de hit. I no can fight chupacabra on my own; Sulik gotta help me. Even though my Doctor skill is still way too really low, I try using Doctor's Bag on Sulik to fix his leg. It work! I try it on my broken arm and that work too. Now we fight as team again.

"Back in BASEMENT of church, chupacabra hit us really hard, but I use tacotics to cripple him. Then he start running away. He ran away through exit grid so we no could catch him.

Image

He even run right through walls. Mighty chupacabra! We wait a long time for him to come back out, but he did and we finally kill him.

"We finished cleaning basement, finding more dead bodies and a strange book.

Image

"We brought the book to the head monk of Abbey.

Image

"That about all to do in Abbey. There were some guys behind the church trying to fix water pump, but they need new motor and I not have that. So we move on.

"We were heading back toward Den to trade, gamble, and spy on Metzger's slave shop again when I feel big headache. My nose start bleeding. My cabeza feel like calabaza. It was Hakunin, my village healer, trying to contact me with dream. I not sure what he say, but it sounded bad. We travel to Arroyo, even though I not found HECK yet.

"When we got to Arroyo, the bridge to my village was destroyed. There was no way to get across chasm. Hakunin was lying at the edge, reaching to me weakly.

"I had to hold my head, my heart, my stomach all at same time. Hakunin muerto, my entire tribe deported! I look across chasm, my eyes fill with tears. I could not move, I not know what to do. South and west ... where? Then, through my tears, I notice map on my PipChico. There was a place south and west, beyond the Primitive Tribe."

It may take a week or two for Hipolito Hankies to transcribe the next few pages of Carlos's journal because they are streaked with tears. We leave you with the entirety of the survival manual that Max gave to Carlos. This manual would have been useful to the residents of Arroyo, though some wasteland denizens are undoubtedly familiar with it:
  1. Buy an AK-97 assault rifle.
  2. If there's someone hanging around your neighborhood you don't know, shoot him.

Poor Carlos, his tribe is gone.

Oh, there is actually one more quest available to stupid characters at the Abbey. The monk in the basement needs a lighter.

:) It made it.

I'm guessing Carlos doesn't know much about the French he took either.

Guess it's gonna be time to make some more :pop: while waiting.

I don't want to derail (how could you?!), but I would love to know how many people this thread has inspired to replay Fallout (1 or 2). I was in the middle of a JA2 game, and stopped to start FO1 again after reading this. Retro game much? Sheesh.

I don't want to recreate the ongoing...uhmmm...vehement...discussion on FO3 here, but I wish some of the designers working on FO3 could see this. (THIS is what you should be making, dammit!!!) :)

Grifman in three, two...
