Thank you very much, Señor Snooze, and sorry everyone for not updating the AAR in ... over a year?! Well, at this rate I'll never finish, so I'll just tell you how the story ends. Right when Carlos and his amigos are about to convince Enclave to let everyone go and make the world a better place, the oil rig suddenly explodes. The drill had ruptured, creating a hole in the ocean floor through which billions of barrels of oil flow. With no one around to cap the well, the Earth soon becomes a big black ball o' goo. Sad, huh?

But Carlos is a janitor, I'm sure he could clean it up with a mop. Besides, not all stories need an ending.

That big a cleanup operation would be a union job. Carlos wouldn't touch that with a 10-foot mop handle, lest he be deported.

Also, Carlos, like, died or something.

Thanks, but I never would have thought of it were it not for the disaster caused by the real-life version of the Enclave. See, delays can be good!

And that wasn't necessarily the ending ....

Still no news from Carlos, poor guy must be having trouble entering the rig. I am right now cooking a ritual empanada in your honor Carlos. Also if you lack energy, ill mail you my perros, they might not taste like Perrocarne but they are at least something, know that we are all counting on you Carlos!

Happy borscht to you, Comrade. Actually, Carlos is now inside the rig (the door took pity on him and opened), but as soon as he stepped inside, he noticed that the tiles needed new grouting. Like a true handyman, Carlos will not step on a tile unless it is properly grouted. So, he will be on his knees for some time yet, using a mixture of Sulik's nose bone and ghoul butter (don't ask) as grout paste. In the meantime, he thanks you for your support and for joining Octopus Planning Committee.

When I finish the AAR, I'll put "Finished!" or "Mangoes!" in the thread title.

Its good to know you dont give up, comrade janitor, if only the janitors in the world would be like you, but nowadays we only find janitors who are boring, crazy war vets., or (according to children) very "naughty". You comrade, are the true soviet hero.

Hipolito Hankies is aware that there has been a significant delay since our last update. It is our mission to provide updates in a regular and timely manner. However, due to circumstances entirely within our control, we were unable to do so.

We are pleased to bring you the final entries in the journal of Carlos Vargas, which we guarantee to post once a day until the end of the story.

Chapter 34: The Deported

From the journal of Carlos Vargas, Guardian of the Wastes, 5 December 2244, The Enclave:

"Me and Sulik and me and Gordo and me and Goris arrive at Enclave. Enclave is big oil rig, but we not see any workers outside. We saw big cabezas looking at us. They kinda look like the big cabezas back at tribal home, so I try to order a food.

Image

"We goed inside. This place not just fast food restaurante. It also discoteca with big dance floor.

Image

"But where are the dancing peoples? I thougted that Enclave was gonna put Brotherhood of Steel outta business with its big discoteca. But there be nobody dancing here.

"I no feel like dancing either. There was no chicas on the dance floor and I no wanna dance with Sulik or Gordo or Goris. Bueno, maybe with Goris a little since I not know if he is hombre or mujer, and he is very the sexy. But I not have time to dance now. Find familia first.

"We try order the food again, from talking machine.

Image

"This really wrong thing to say, because machine shooted us! Other restaurante workers come out and attack us, too. They wear steel pantalones and have big guns.

"The talking machine hurt Gordo real bad. I punch out talking machine with Mega Cooking Mitt. Gordo run away, he go loco.

Image

"I try run after Gordo but no could find, so I stay to help other amigos fight. Sulik shoot guy with H&K G11 but not do mucho damage, so I kick guy in the back until he make sangre.

Image

"We try keep going, but restaurante workers keep attacking and not giving us food we order. Floor soon become mess of sangre and steel pantalones.

Image

"I go back down hallway to find Gordo. I saw him lying on floor in his own sangre, his ojos not moving, his lengua hanging out. Pobrecito. The talking machine killed him muerto. Chau, Vic. You fixed a lotta stuff to help me get here, but I no can fix your broken body. I put hamburguesa buns on his eyes so that El Rey Amarillo will take his soul.

"We look around restaurante a little more and find janitors. Mucho, mucho janitors, like me! But something wrong with them. They look like they no wanna work.

Image

"I find doctor and ask him to treat the janitors, maybe they sick. But he not beed nice to me.

Image

"We look around more and find dormitorio, but there not be anybody sleeping there. There be more restaurante workers attacking us and still not ready with my order. Another big mess make.

Image

"Some janitors come running into dormitorio. No, they no here to sleep or clean mess. They here to fight! I though they was gonna help me, so I raised my Mega Cooking Mitt to sky and yell 'Janitors of the world, oonite!'

Image

"But the janitors no help me. They try to kill me and my amigos. So we had to kill them. Why this sad thing happening?

"I excuse myself from fight to use el baño.

Image

"We try to get to another floor, but walk into small room. There we see hamburguesa maker, order-taking robot, and drink robot. All not help us get food. Goris camed in to try help me.

Image

"They all attack him right-a-quick. He no have no chance. Goris, my chupacabra amigo, died.

Image

"Adiós, Goris. I never gonna have chance to dance with you now. I wishing I took him out on dance floor when we got here. If anybody reading this journal, por favor, you no make same mistake. If you get chance, I hope you dance.

"No time for cry now. We gotta go find my peoples and get hamburguesa de gato.

"We goed downstair and fight more drink robots.

Image

"I run around looking for familia. I thinked I feeled them nearby, but where they be? While I look, an hombre shooted me in the back with his pistola de plasma.

Image

"This maked me mad. I run to him and punch him in nostril. He falled.

Image

"Then I look up and see someone on other side of floor, standing behind pared de limonada. It could be? I walk over to her, tears coming to my ojos. Sí, I finded her, mi abuela!

Image

"I wanted to fall in front of her and kiss her pies, but pared de limonada was in way. All my peoples was here, stuck behind paredes de limonada. I no could free them, so I just listen to what abuela had to say.

Chapter 35: In Violence is the Preservation of the World

"Me and Sulik goed downstair like Elder say to. There we see big maze with singing computadoras.

Image

"I know what I gotta do here. I gotta do very difficult tribal dance, sometime it even kill you if you not know right move. I dance through maze as fast as can while limbo song sing.

Image

Image

Image

Image

"I open all maze doors, and see maze goes to two other rooms. I go into left room and it have a lotta Enclave assistant managers. It look like they have meeting. I try to blend in.

Image

Image

"All the Enclavadores surround me. Since we all look same, I get confuse.

Image

"The Enclavadores not have weapons, so they punch me. I punch back with Mega Cooking Mitt. Sulik come in later after he finish dancing limbo (he not as fast as me) and help a little by shooting. When fight over, I look at computadora in the room, but there nothing good on it.

Image

"I leave left room and go into right room. Another room full of assistant managers. This time I try to talk smart.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

"These cholos not have weapons, either, so it was just mano-a-mitt. After that, it look like a janitor waxed the floor with sangre. Before I leave, I look through some lockers and find another HECK! So now I have 2 HECK. What the HECK doing here, I no know. But I now can grow twice the tamale corn.

"I escape from maze room and go downstairs. Things a little different here. I still gotta fight some robos y cholos, but people look kinda scared here. I find room with big table, like at a party for los niños. But there no be no niños here.

Image

"Sulik y yo kill that guy pretty quick, but others come. A big drink robot shooted big boom-boom cohete at me and knock me off my pies.

Image

"I get up and feel strange in la cabeza. I thought I saw man in suit and una bambina in black dress running around. Maybe this was dream. Then Sulik kill them both and I see it not a dream.

"After this fight, I go into next room and see guy in big oficina. He look muy importante and sit at big desk. The desk look muy importante, too

Image

"The desk say something in English I no can read good because my ojos still hurt from that cohete boom. It say something like 'Presidente de las Tostadas Unidas.' Tostadas Unidas sound pretty good to me, so I thinked maybe I even switch sides and join Enclave. But then el Presidente talk to me, and he very angry. If I know one thing, is that no one who eat tostada is angry. Something not right here.

Image

"He even got a perro, too, but I bet he not as tasty as good old Perrocarne. I leaved them both alone. We goed down to bottom floor, where it look kinda quiet. I thinked we could sneak through.

Image

"This plan not worked.

Image

"These Enclavadores have good weapons. Pistola de plasma, pistola de gauss, y big boom-boom cohete. They fight us from both sides, no care if they even shoot each other. After we knock a few down, one of them blow big hole in Sulik's estomago like he not even wear armor. Sulik looked at me, then down at hole in his estomago, where a lot of sangre y salchichas already coming out. '96 p-p-points?' he say, then he roll his ojos and fall down.

"I feeled like I wanna fall down, too, but first I kill all the bad guys. I then look for Sulik, who was hard to find under all the other bodies. When I finded him, it was too late. Sulik was muerto. All my amigos I come here with--Gordo, Goris, Sulik--all muertos. I hold back scream while I take bone from Sulik's nose. When this over, I will give Grampy Bone to Sulik seester.

"I walk away and turn corner, then find una computadora grandisima. I think this what Elder tolded me to destroy.

Image

"Un gran problema, though, is that there be three hombres here, dressed like cientificos, who know I not suppose to be there.

" 'You are not supposed to be here!' one of them say to me. 'I'm calling security right now!'

He go over to press a button. I knew it all over. I no can fight anymore if I not have Sulik with me. I too tired. Now just time to give up and let Enclave to kill me like they kill my amigos. But before the cientifico press the button, he look at me.

" 'Hang on ... where have I seen you before?' he ask.

" '¿Qué sé yo?' I say. 'Maybe you seed me in movie somewhere?'

" 'A movie ... that's right. You do porn! Isn't your stage name Spooge McFuck?'

" 'No. Yo me llamo El Douche.'

" 'Ah, that's right, El Douche! You're the best, man! Hey, are you here to shoot a scene? Great! We're not allowed to leave the room, but we'll stay out of your way. We'll even keep our backs turned so you can work in privacy. Now make some movie magic, Douche!'

Image

"I owe muchas gracias to the Corsican hermanos. Maybe I make another pelicula for them gratis.

"But when I looked at computadora, I not know what to do. So many button, everything in English. I not know which one make computadora stop working. I just a janitor. If cleaning could destroy computadora, I be a bomba atómica. But it can't, and I not. Maybe I really am estupido. Maybe Elder wrong to trust me.

"I stare at big computadora. I feel like it staring back at me, eating my soul like el diablo. Now this time I really give up. There nothing I can do except celebrate my last day alive. I look through my things and find a little cake. At least I think it a cake. It kinda look like one.

Image

"It gotta candle coming out of it, like a cumpleaños cake. I not know when my cumpleaños is, but I pretend it is today. ¿Por qué no? My real cumpleaños not matter any more. I light candle and watch it burn. 'Feliz cumpleaños, Carlos Vargas,' I say to my self while agua comes from my ojos. 'You were born tonto, now you die tonto, and everyone you love die with you. Wait, what kinda cake--'

As we near the end of this AAR, we at Hipolito Hankies wish to thank you for staying with us for so long. We realize that you have other reading options and encourage you to take them next time.

Chapter 36: The Emancipation Decapitation

"My head hurt from the cake that I thinked was bomba, I mean the bomba that I thinked was cake. I glad I not put it in my boca before it explode. The computadora grandisima got hurt more bad than me from the explode. It now beep and smoke and say loca things like 'Complete reactor meltdown.' What, now computadora think reactor is helado that melt?

"I leaved room and see that everybody looking real scared. They running around, kinda like how I feel when I think la migra is gonna deport me. The janitors now start to follow me, asking for help to get out. I say bueno, you come with me, then I go upstair. Then I see Elder and my other tribal familia is no standing behind paredes de limonada. They free! But they look scare, too. They say 'Carlos, the reactor is melting, you have to get us out of here!' I no know why they so scare of a little helado. I think helado taste pretty good, even if it melt. But I say bueno, let me lead way.

"At top, I see some Enclavadores that I not kill before. I tell all the janitors and my familia to stand back so I can lucha with the bad guys. But when I go up to bad guys, they no wanna lucha.

Image

"They not gonna run away from their yob. They gonna stand here while helado melt, and one of them even told me to get a cover for helado since it melting everywhere. These hombres are muy trabajadores.

"I keep walking and got to the discoteca, almost outta here. Then I saw him on the dance floor. HEEM! The hombre grandisimo who is big like tree, and who talk like tree. He is the one who kill innocent peoples in desert. His name is Francisco Horrigan, and he is el jefe final.

" 'Is no safe to come yet,' I yell to the janitors and tribals behind me. 'This could get muy feo.' Then I turn to Don Francisco and prepare for mucha lucha.

Image

Image

"He tooked out a big pistola from one of his arm. This thing even bigger than biggest burrito ever I ever make. I bet even its bullets are bigger than burritos. Before he could get good aim at me (and before I could get too scare to fight), I ran at Don Francisco as fast as can and punch him in leg.

Image

Image

Image

"For long time, I run around Don Francisco like chihuahua, hitting him in legs and trying to not get shooted by burrito cannon. We surrounded by order-taking robots who shooted at us. I think they trying to shoot me, but Francisco is so big that he get hit, too. The robot bullets mostly bounce off me and him, but it like fighting in cloud of mosquitos.

"To make things more mal, the Enclavadores who let me walk ahead now start helping Don Francisco!

Image

"Bueno, now I got a real big mess, and not the kind I like to clean. I keep running in circle around Don Francisco while the Enclavadores chase me, trying to shoot me. Francisco just turning around, swinging big burrito cannon but not hitting me. And robots keep shooting us all.

"Soon, the Enclavadores throw away their pistolas because they not work no more. I punch Francisco again in legs, and this time I think he really hurting. He kneel down and hold his knee. While Francisco is down, I punch the Enclavadores until they fall down and not move any more. Then I wait for Francisco to get up and make next move.

Image

"First time I notice how quiet it got. The order-taking robots not shooting any more. Some of them are muertos, and the others no have no more bullets. Even Francisco not have any more bullets in his burrito cannon. But what he got in his other arm? Uh oh, I thinking, I think I know what he gonna do.

Image

Image

"That is biggest cuchillo I ever seen. Is he gonna cut a lotta queso with that cuchillo? Most of time I think cutting queso is a pretty good idea, but not when I am the queso.

"I walk up to him slow, keeping an ojo on the cuchillo. But he hit me so fast with cuchillo I not even see it happen. I get knocked onto back and I slide across room like flan on a puddle of dulce de leche. It hurt a lot.

"I get up. Don Francisco walking very slow to me, like a viejo. I think I hit him so many times in legs that he no can move good. He probably feeling mucho dolor. I walk up to him slow again, but before I am close enough that his cuchillo can hit me, I jump at him punch him in face with Mega Cooking Mitt. This stun him, but he try to stay on his hurty pies. His whole body struggle to not fall.

"Now is being my chance. I take Grampy Bone, the bone that was in Sulik's nariz, and stick it in between my knuckles on my Mega Cooking Mitt. I make fist as hard as can, jump at Don Francisco, punch him in neck, and yell 'GOOOOOOAAAAALLLL!.'

"Grampy Bone got bury deep inside Francisco. Francisco shake like he doing salsa baile, trying to get Grampy Bone out, but it not working. The spirits of Sulik y Grampy be fighing Francisco from the inside.

Image

Image

Image

Image

"The tribal spirits really goed loco on Francisco. But he still gotta little bit of jugo left in him.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

"Así es el muerto. Every time you kill a gringo, an angel gets his sombrero.

"It time for me, my familia, and the janitors to leave and find new yob.

EPILOGUE VIDEO

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's ovar!!!

Hipolito Hankies gives special thanks to Killap for his restoration patch and for providing scripts to help the unintelligent Carlos Vargas navigate the wastes, and general thanks to everyone for reading and supporting this AAR.

This AAR is just my third parody! For more fun:
  • Ultima IV: The Little Shepherd: My first AAR has a new home! For those of you who read it on Gone Gold or GeoCities, now you can relive the magic! For those who haven't read it before, now you can live the magic!
  • Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri AAR: My sexy masterpiece.
  • The Terminator 25th Anniversary Parody: Like the Fallout 2 AAR, I dropped this for a long time. But like the Fallout 2 AAR, I intend to get back to it. I'll update it in the next week or two, so please keep an eye out for it in the Everything But Gaming forum.
If you'd like to read another Fallout 2 dumb-guy AAR, here's a disturbing and brilliant one by Breetai of the Something Awful forum.

I also encourage you to read and enlist in The Bad Shepherd's Dwarf Fortress AAR that is currently underway. Our fortress has survived and thrived under my reign as Duke, so sign up and become my disposable subject!

Now it's time to say goodbye

Ah man. I never read the rest of this thing after you took a long break. And now it seems the images don't work. Crap. Any chance of fixing it? Or is it maybe saved somewhere?

Hmmm... I missed this, too. Looks like the hosting site "villagephotos.com" is a little dead. :(

Hipolito Hankies, S.A., regrets the temporary unavailability of its image resources. The image host, VillagePhotos, sued our company after the runaway success of the Fallout 2 AAR, claiming that the images were its intellectual property instead of ours. In response, we purchased the Occupy movement and assigned its members to occupy VillagePhotos headquarters. Unexpectedly, the resonance of the Occupiers' drumbeats combined with the strange fragrances of their tents to create an electro-wave that permanently destroyed the image servers.

As a stopgap measure, Hipolito Hankies ordered the Occupiers to paint restorations of the lost images from memory. For the journal entries posted after the yearlong break, we have posted the restored images to Dropbox and reurled the image links. We shall do the same for the earlier journal entries when market conditions are favorable.

Excellent. Thank you. Also, have you considered making it into a PDF or other file format? It would save you time if your new host goes down again.

You're welcome! A couple of other readers also suggested the PDF idea and one even converted the first page or so to PDF for me, but that was it. I guess it's not that easy?

Once I've restored everything, I will at least save the AAR as webpages so that I can host them somewhere or make them downloadable in a zip file in case of another outage.

Making a PDF is very easy actually. You just install PDFCreator. It sets up a driver that Windows detects as a printer. Then, no matter what program, if you print using that "printer" it will be saved as a PDF file. Editing one afterwards is a little more complicated, so it's easiest if you just get it right the first time. Best to just use your favorite word processor (even wordpad is fine) and set things up how you like, then print and pow, you has a pdf.

Modern office apps have "save as PDF" as an option. Word has had it since 2007. Corel had it earlier. I think OpenOffice has it too.
So you may not even need to download the app.

That said, I love PDFCreator - used it for years and it works in non-office apps since your computer treats it like a printer.

Thanks for the tip on PDFCreator. It's neat to have, but there doesn't seem to be a way to preserve animated GIFs in the PDFs, which would make it unsuitable. Cabeza Calabaza with 1 frame of animation instead of 2 just isn't as festive.

Hello
I have made a octo account just to request these images be re-uploaded

I come to this post every couple of years to get a laugh, and this time all the image links are borked

Would it be possible to get them re-upped? Or an archived post with all the working images?

Hola, new Octo!

I've been long meaning to get all the image links working again. Sorry for my slowness. I have to move everything to a new image hosting service (I'll probably go with Imgur, they seem pretty stable), then edit all the image urls so they work. I hope to set aside a cerveza-fueled weekend in the near future so I can do this.

Indeed! This and the Alpha Centauri AARs are truly works of art and it would be travesty for them to be lost. Some of the best creative writing I've ever read!

Thank you! That is much appreciated.

Dropbox officially stopped being an image host, which is why the links stopped working. I was about to move everything to Imgur, but then I found it's possible to force Dropbox to keep hosting images. It will be a long, dong process, though, because I have to generate a new shared link for each image and update the URLs. I've started doing for Chapter 34 of this AAR (scroll up). If the Chapter 34 images aren't working for anyone, let me know.
