Hey, thanks! It was just a day or so of fooling around on my part, but I had a lot of fun. I haven't decided whether to continue and polish it up, or to move on to a new project. But I'm thrilled at exploring each other's creations, and it seems really cool to design areas with others' visits in mind.

Nice tunnel! Did you just happen upon the lava and water, or do you know some trick for finding them that I don't? It's extremely rare that I come across them by chance when prospecting.

Is there any way to get rid of excess material, other than dumping it piece-by-piece? I have stacks upon stacks of rock, gravel, and dirt wasting space in my stash.

Not that I know of, but let me know if you figure anything out. For now, the best method I've found is digging a "trash chute" and then clearing out my inventory all at once. I've found no practical use for dirt and gravel (only occasionally do I use dirt for outdoor landscaping). Rock, however, I craft into smooth blocks whenever I have spare coal, as I find it makes a nice building material.

Sheer luck. I used my usual random exploration technique, which is to dig long, straight tunnels through the rock, and fully excavate any pockets of dirt or gravel I come across.

Re: Minecraft Multiplayer!

Postby Cylus Maxii » Mon Sep 27, 2010 11:48 am

Spent a lot of time playing single player survival mode this rainy weekend. I now wish I had played multiplayer so you all could see my neat works.

I'm having a lot of problems finding any metals. I've gone all of the way to the bottom of my starting tunnel system and have even found the zombie generator room and a treasure chest. I've explored all side tunnels and even drove a shaft from my main hall all of the way down to the bedrock. So far, I've found maybe 50-60 iron, less than a dozen gold and maybe 5 diamonds. I have a couple of hundred red-iron dust though. Luckily - I've found a couple of thousand coal along the way.

I think the game generates the world chunks and then puts in the caverns as systems. I have found no open spaces when tunneling laterally (at any level) from my fully explored cavern system (Unless it was another part of the same system that I had already marked with torches. The only exception was the very bottom, where I had to tunnel through rock to follow the lava (the lava was connected, but the air pockets weren't always at least 2 block high to let me through.)

btw, when exploring the tunnel system - I would put one fence section in the entrance of any dead and just to help me find my way and keep me from going wasting time getting lost in the same areas. I also occasionally put white steps on frequently used paths (as bread crumbs).

I'll have to take a couple of good screen shots and figure out how to post them.

My contribution, not far from AWS260 (thanks again for all that redstone) - a 14 segment "LCD" display:

Feel free to come play with it. Levers in the back have redstone torch indicators to let you know what segments in front are lit.

I may make more displays to join to it, though I think I'll use smoothed stone rather than sand for the next ones. But I have a few other projects in mind that may distract me.

Now, I haven't been out promoting the server much, but at this point you gotta at least visit for a few minutes and look around. We've added some pretty spiffy stuff all over our little world, including our invention of Water-based elevators. (Somewhat System Shock-esque)

I'll have to go check it out. I'm still keeping myself busy excavating my fortress until I his bedrock. Once I'm there, then I'll start to explore the world some.

If you don't respawn automatically on logging back in, try the "/home" command.

I finally logged into server last night - that LED display was awesome. Sedge was on for a bit.

I was being a tourist and looking for a spot to maybe settle in, but the lag was awful and I ran into void at edge of wold (it stopped loading chunks) soon after. I'll try again some other night.

I built a little pier off into our bay and use it to dump my excess stone/earth/gravel into. So don't fall off the end of my little pier or you'll be auto loaded up with thousands of pieces of garbage stone. Glad the oceans have lots of room :)

WHo built the big turtle thingy? That looks cool, haven't checked it out close yet, bet that took some time.

Well we switched over to the OO server tonight. We now have a vertical tree farm and a mine cart route that goes from our castle basement to the main OO castle mine. You should find a normal cart, a transport cart and a rocket cart if anyone wants to try it out.

It's just a 3 cobblestone wide & 5 or 6 cobble stonr long pier running into the main bay close to my place, it's past the orginal spwan area, should be able to sink and get a couple inventories full of stone/dirt/gravel

I've been ruminating on this and I've come up with a goal that may be a little ambitious, but I think I can do. I haven't worked through a proof of concept offline yet though.

I'm pretty sure that I can make a multi-panel display that has a single set of controls in front of the display. My plans:

- 14 buttons arranged near ground level (one for each the segments)
- a button to choose the "active" panel (each press advances to the next panel)
- a single toggle circuit that will toggle the state of the selected segment
- a button to turn off all segments in a panel [maybe]

It'll be interesting to see if I can pull it off. The real fun part will be to see if I can actually re-use the toggle circuit like I hope to. Though I'll just build 14 of them if I'm not up to the task.

If I can get it to work, then it would just be grunt work to add more and more panels, replacing the natural skyline with one of my making. Mua-ha-ha-haaaa!

I just logged onto the OO server during my lunch break today. Lordnine was there digging coal out under his castle. I was impressed with all the crazy stuff you guys have been building.
The highlight was taking a walk along the sky path and falling off into a pool of lava in AWS's front yard.

Not sure about the orientation so I wouldn't use it if you get lost, but it should give an idea of how far things have come. Click for the much (MUCH) larger version.
