Journal of Lord Mortis
Conversion of Sandy Ragefast successful.
Possible candidates: Bad Shepherd, Ol' Guthands, Farley, Dobson
Spoke with Dwarf Liaison from the Mountainhomes. docD is a wanted dwarf. Spoke to docD about it, and officially put him under my protection, with one major caveat which I will reveal to him next Spring.
Project Theohall nears completion. Approved the suggested construction of:
Waterfall to be installed in Theohall CAREFULLY (to be arranged at later date)
"Yes, Foreman Hrnac?"
"The hallway into Theohall is done, why don't you start engraving? I'd rather that the first engraving of the Fortress be done by you and not...Lagom Lite."
"Agreed. Hmm. I haven't been here long, what should I engrave?"
"You know that asshole with the eyepatch? Sergeant Semaj?"
"...The complete poser?"
"Yeah. He was originally the Militia Commander of the Crazed Violence. He ceded command to Cortilian willingly, but I want you to make it look like he lost the job due to incompetence. Engrave it and it becomes history."
"Heh. On your head be it, sir. I've seen that guy practice."
"I'll be fine. Just do it."
"Beautiful. You have a gift, Duncan."
"Bad Shepherd?" Cpt. Anejo creeped cautiously into the Metalsmith's workshop. "Bad Shepherd?"
A hammer was flung at him from one of the corners of the room. He dodged it easily.
"WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT?!"
"Bad Shepherd! It's me, Anejo! I hear you've been overworked lately."
"OVERWORKED?!" Bad Shepherd shrieked, "YOU THINK I'M OVERWORKED?!" she charged Anejo, grabbing him from the bottom of his breastplate and lifting
him. Anejo began to jerk, trying to get free.
"I'VE SPENT THE LAST THREE FUCKING MONTHS DOING ABSOLUTELY FUCKING EVERYTHING IN HERE! THAT "GENIUS" EZEKIEL? DOES JACK SHIT. I SMELT THE FUCKING ORE," she threw Anejo to the floor, "I WORK THE FUCKING ORE," she kicked him once, her foot easily deflected by the leggings she had made for Anejo, "I TURN IT INTO YOUR FUCKING ARMOR. AND WHAT DO I GET?!" She shook with rage, her face contorting. "Ammo requisition forms. Ammo requisition forms.
I AM NOT A WEAPONSMITH! I HAVE PUT UP WITH YOUR BULLSCHIST LONG ENOUGH! NO MORE! NO MORE ARMOR! NO MORE ORE! AND ESPECIALLY. NO. MORE. WEAPONS!!!" She ran, screaming out of the workshop. Anejo got up, and took a look at her work desk. She had stacked all of the requisition forms she had received in the last three months. All of them were either requests for additional ore for EzeKieL to work with for his statues, or requests for additional weapons and ammunition coming from Cpt. Soulsbayne and, oddly, 260 and docD as well. He shook his head, took the stack of order forms, and brought them to Commander Cortilian, before heading off to find Mortis and try to get him to talk Bad Shepherd down.
"Hmm? It's...Hrnac, right? You were there at my interview. The foreman."
"Yeah, that's right. I'm here to talk to you about your treatment of Bad Shepherd."
plebian? The armorsmith
? She would not know the importance of art if I shoved it-"
"Yeah, yeah. I've had a look at your work. It's shite."
"What?! How, DARE YO-"
Hrnac floored EzeKieL with a punch.
"No one wants to look at statues of roaches on their way to dinner, jackass. I should have you gutted for that."
EzeKieL lay on the floor, gasping. Hrnac tossed an iron bar at him.
"Here. Enjoy it. It's the last one you'll be getting for a while, till you learn to "channel your creative output in a more socially acceptable manner." See you later."
Hrnac turned and walked away.
Public Notice in the Barracks
Due to recent complaints by Private Donnally and Corporal Miller, the two squads will now alternate monthly in their required training regimen. You now have every other month off, but feel free to train regardless. Or come fishing with me, that's okay, too.
The buzzards had been harassing the Fortress again, and had even stolen some meat. Cpt. Soulsbayne had decided to head out on her own to deal with the problem. Sergeant Semaj had followed at a distance, eager to demonstrate his sharpshooting skills. Soulsbayne didn't care. She had seen Semaj shoot, he was nothing on her.
She ran out of bolts quickly, but she ran fast, faster than the buzzards. She was breaking one of its wings with her crossbow when she saw him, grinning. A goblin with a bag on his back. He drew a knife. She charged. And then stopped. Behind the Goblin was an entire squad of Goblin archers.
Semaj ran back to the Fortress, raising the alarm. Soulsbayne ran east, trying to divert attention away from Semaj and the Fortress, to give the squads enough time to properly mobilize. Her shield and armor held out against the first dozen bolts. She remembered how grudgingly she had accepted the Iron Breastplate, threatening to leave if they did not soon provide the bone she required. Now she was thankful. As she ran however, one struck her unprotected arm. She did not give in to the pain. The leg. Still she ran. One of the arrows hid her square in the back. Her entire body went numb, and she collapsed.
Arrows rained upon her and she did not give in.
Back at the Fortress, the civilians crowded in the panic room. The two squads gathered and rushed forth, confident in their training and their armor. A kobold goblin was spotted at the entrance. He was critically wounded, but not before stabbing Cpl. Miller in the foot, causing her to scream and fall over. As the rest of the squad fell in on him, he dodged into a stone trap. Crushed and bleeding, Pvt. Horizon quickly decapitated him and then rushed on to the battlefield.
Chaos reigned. The buzzards fell in, drawn in by the fresh blood spilled on their uniforms. Enraged, Horizon tore them out of her way, killing one and wounding another. Her and Sgt. Jackson charged the field, shields raised, weapons ready. Horizon felt her body hum, and knew she was invincible.
They fell in. Jackson quickly crushed the skull of one with his mace, she wounded another, nearly severing his arm. The arrows were either being neatly deflected by their shields, or simply bouncing off their armor. Horizon soared. She was invincible
. A goddess of death. A he-
The arrow pierced her heart. She wrenched it out. Blood spattered everywhere. In a frenzy, she ran as fast as she could back to the fortress, the blood streaming down her front. She collapsed and saw only a starry void where her squad used to be.
The goblins were quickly routed, fleeing from their superior numbers and equipment. The squad found the broken body of Cpt. Soulsbayne, pierced by seventeen arrows, four of which were lodged in vital organs. She was still crawling away as they had struck her.
The Fortress alert was lifted, and the populace mourned the death of two heroes.
