Hawken - new mech game

Post by Daehawk »

Perhaps a tad fast paced but it sure looks nice doing it.

This looks good! Of course, I remember that Mechwarrior video that came out a long time ago, and that looked really good. But I'll take a shipping game over a nice movie any day.

It does look nice, but it does seem too fast paced. I'd prefer them if they were more lumbering hulks of machinery. This is more Unreal Tournament/Quake where I feel like it should be Rainbow Six. But that's just me.

This might be a nice replacement for Exteel, since PlayNC sent that down the defunct highway.

I don't like the setting as much, but I love the cockpit view, and am curious to see how much customization you get to do.

One of the comments was that the game doesn't feel like big mechs in a big city, but more miniaturized mechs in a normal city. Given the video, I'd agree. The mechs don't look "large" enough to be mechs.

Agreed. I don't see how this isn't just skinned UT. And that's definitely gamepad control, it's not precise enough to be mouse.

The movement, pacing, art, and practically everything is different from UT.

Most especially, they nailed the feel of being in the cockpit of a big bipedal walker.

It's like calling Call of Duty just a reskinned Quake 3.

Ok, I watched it two more times and I know what feels wrong to me, the rabbiting. I know it's jump jets and why wouldn't they have jump jets but this is why I don't play FPS online, too many farging rabbits.

I dunno, looks too fast, like Heavy Gear instead of MechWarrior / Battletech.

New video

This thing is looking awfully speedy. I think one major weapon will decide the battles.

Hawken hands on from PAX

The voice over being overpowered by the game sound fixes itself after a few minutes.

It has the great look of a mecha game, and a bit of the feel in the way they shake the screen and animate things.

However, it really is just a first person shooter with a lot of mecha dressing. Admittedly, it's very good mecha dressing.

I played it at PAX and while I enjoyed it, it was just another first person deathmatch shooter in the end, but a good looking one. So while initially enjoyable, it wouldn't hold my attention for any span of time. It even uses standard WASD style FPS controls.
