Ever since upgrading my pc 2 weeks ago and installing Windows 7, i have been unable to play sims 2

here's what happens. I start up the game and get the opening video to play just fine, then it gets to the main loading screen and thats it-- when i check my task manager the game has quit responding. I am at my wits end. I tried running it in every compatibility mode and none of them helped, i downloaded direct x 9 and that didn't help. I am so frustrated, i just wanna play my game PLEASE HELP ME!!!

I have had no issues running Sims 2 with most of the expansions in both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows 7 Home Professional. As cicobuff said, try running the game as an admin and see what happens. Oh, and welcome to the OO forums.

Have you tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling it since updating to Windows 7?

Do you have any mods installed? I just had a similar issue with Sims 3 after installing one of the expansion packs. The game got stuck on the loading screen and wouldn't load. Turns out I had an old mod that fixed some bugs the game had when it first came out, and it was not compatible with the update. Removing the mod from the mod folder solved my problem and my game plays fine.

I think i tried running it as an administrator already. i haven't done a uninstall/ reinstall as of yet, as when i installed it there were no old sims 2 files on the pc as i had to get a new hard drive so windows 7 was a fresh install as was my game and all its ep's and sp's. where is the mods folder?

EDIT: i just tried to run it as and admin in windows 7 and it did the same thing, it froze at the loading screen.

Heya

Which download of Direct-X 9 did you install?
Or did you install from the Sims-2 Media?

Try running the Direct-X Web Installer, which should update your PC to the latest version:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/d ... laylang=en

It is something I run every three months or so to keep up to date with the various DX9 dll's.

Other than that, the most common suggestions seem to be:
1 ) Install outside of the "C:\Program Files*\" directory structure ( try installing under C:\Games\ instead, avoids many issues, or use another drive partition, say D:\Games\ )
2 ) Run as Administrator
3 ) Run in Windows XP compatibility mode

Some folks have had no issues with Compatibility mode, others no issues with DX, however as each person running it likely has different games already installed on their machines, no common DX level should be assumed.
Apparently there are game updates that include Windows Vista runtime capability, so make sure the game is fully patched up as well.

What kind of PC upgrade?
Notably, what GPU / Video Card are you using?

Generally when asking for help, running DXDiag, exporting the info and attaching the output helps folks understand what kind of PC you have...

In that spec window - click on "Save all information" and it will create a text file. Copy and paste the stuff in that text file into a post and we can see all the specs - including your video card setup - which could be part of the issue.

According to EA Helper BGY-11:

Unfortunately, The sims 2 was not tested for compatibility under Windows 7; our best advice is to run the game under Win98 or XP compatibility mode.

That was from 13 months ago and it looks like they've collectively shrugged their shoulders over the issue.

Heya

The only things that really stand out to me is the driver version for the AMD Graphics adapter, and the use of the Sound Blaster device.

I am not a fan of the Creative kit, having seen it cause a few issues, but that can probably be taken with an appropriate grain of salt

You might want to try upgrading your graphics drivers though, as one possibility.
( the one you currently have installed came from Windows Update )

ok, I downloaded and installed an updated driver-- tried running the game again using windows 7 as well as running it in compatibility mode using winxp sp2 and win vista sp 2 and it still stops responding in the same spot. as far as i know i have all the game patches.

Go back try XP mode again only this time try turning off User Access Control. That bugger locks a lot of write privileges out of a lot software.

I'm not in front of a 7 machine right now so I can't do the walk through but I can post some links...

I don't recommend turning off UAC all of the time as it is the the root of Win7 security but I have seen fix enough Win 7 problems (mostly with installs) that setting UAC temporarily to never notify has become a standard troubleshooting tool.

Also if your version of 7 is pro, you can download and run XP on your machine... Sadly for me my version of 7 at home is premium.

I'm batting about .950 with getting 32 or 7 hostile aps to work in an XP Virtual machine. To date my one failure is a company made home made ap for the Progress database.

ok, i disabled UAC tried it with xp sp2, and with vista sp 2 still does the same thing-GRRRR! this is getting frustrating! i can't download xp either could it be cause i a m running direct x 11? i know sims 1 wiks with directX 9?

This may be a bit time consuming, but saw a post elsewhere about it possibly being a bug tied to the Mansions and Gardens or Apartment Life expansions. Trying uninstalling all the expansions and running the base Sims 2 first. If it works, then you will know it's tied to one of the expansions and you can then proceed installing each expansion and seeing if it works after each expansion is added.

This is just a stab in the dark, but you never know.

It is quite possible that the game may not run with Aero enabled (affects older games run from Win 7 and Vista). Check the "Disable desktop composition" checkbox on the compatibility tab to disable it and see if that doesn't get it to run properly.

Yeah, you have it. Vista and Win 7 use your grapics card to create the nice, fancy screen GUI. A lot of the time this is not compatible with games or applications written for earlier versions of windows so you have to turn it off to make it work like the older versions do. Doing it is as simple as checking a box on the compatibility tab. That turns Aero off while you run your game and turns it back on automatically when you exit the game. It would take you literally 30 seconds to see if that's your problem or not.

well, i have my game running-- YAY!!!! i don't know i forgot to patch something or what-- so i put my downloads in and was going to play and it went right back to not responding on the load screen, so i took the downloads folder out, tried it loaded up perfectly again. removed my hacks from the downloads folder and put it back in only to have it quit responding... so my guess is its something in my downloads folder.

So the downloads stuff is extra things beyond the official base game and official expansions, right? If so, move all of those things to a different folder, then add them in one at a time and restart the game until you find which thing is causing the crash. Then you would get most of your download stuff back.
