They have their own culture.

Did you turn on the animal cultures , or did they turn on spontaneous, un-asked for?

I don't know what animal cultures are, so unless they are on by default, no. I think supernatural events are turned on by default and that is what did it. This was not what I expected by Supernatural. But now that I have a cub, I will see how cultivating bear foreigners work. If I didn't crash and burn so many times, I'd take the time to try and convert my entire fledgling empire.

Yeah. I’m not sure how they are invoked.

I was only aware of a way to start the game as one.

Does anybody perhaps know of a way to fix the steam launcher for CK2 to stop crashing after clicking the play button?

I've been unable to play CKII thru my Steam account since the first update in january this year, and I've tried asking on Steam but gotten no useful help, figured I'd take a chance and ask on the forums I frequent.

Have you tried launching it from the .exe outside of steam? What about offline mode?

I don't have an answer but my first thought would be (I've had to do this for other games)

First try running from C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II\ck3game.exe (running without making a call to Steam)
Second try running steam://rungameid/203770 (using the steam command to call game 203770, aka CK2 to start the game via steam)

third purge the game

1) Turn of the steam cloud synch for CK2
2) uninstall the game
3) find files under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II and delete them (or rename them if it makes you too nervous)
4) Look for reference to 203770 throughout C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\xxxxxxx. Try to understand them and rename or delete them.
5) Look for C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\shadercache\203770 and rename or delete it.
5) reinstall the game.

I make no guarantees this won't make things worse but I find that uninstall and reinstall without removing cloud synch and the various config files for a game in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\xxxxxxx will find a game continually copying problems back into cloud synch and then back on to my computer.

Don't just do what I say, but rather try and understand what I am doing (which is purging my machine of steam game 203770 reference) and experiment in a way you are comfortable with.

I'm not going to create a new thread yet, but for those interested, Crusader Kings 3 release date announced
Crusader Kings 3 will release on September 1, 2020. It will arrive on PC via the Paradox Store and other “major online retailers” – which means Steam – and will set you back $49.99 (£41.99, or €49.99). It’s available to pre-order now.

Sporting a new minimalist UI, a gorgeous new map, and new 3D character rendering, this highly anticipated medieval romp is looking to set new benchmarks for grand strategy design and double down on the RPG elements and emergent narrative concepts that made the previous game so famous. Who needs Assassin’s Creed Valhalla when you can lead the entire Viking invasion of Saxon England in 867? Or better yet, play as the Saxons and fight back the heathens? The multiple start dates introduced in the second game make a return, so you can also start in 1066 with William the Conqueror as well, if that’s more your style.

Crusader Kings 3 will feature over 20,000 characters, from Iceland to India, and from the frozen north of Scandinavia all the way down to the Gold Coast in Africa.

CK3 pre-release price is $50 for the game or $75 for the "royal edition," which includes pre-purchase of three flavor packs and the first major expansion.

If I know Paradox, the flavor packs will be mostly cosmetic but with some attractive event lines for popular starting regions. The first expansion will probably be $15 or so.

I guess I'll buy it now rather than later because I know I'm hooked either way.

Also perhaps of interest, the CK3 FAQ - Developer Diaries, Questions from the Community, Dev Answers and Important Information

And this might be of interest to folks:
If you are familiar with Paradox Development Studio games, you surely have realized that we will start with a Major Expansion for CK3 at a slightly higher price point than those of our previous titles. This is due to the fact that we want to spend more time on our CK3 expansions and deliver bigger DLCs with better, more exciting content and well-enhanced mechanics.

In-between the Major Expansions, smaller Flavor Packs will be released to add some spice to themes and specific regions of the world and give everyone something to spend your time with.

If they are coming out with a new game, shouldn't there be a dedicated thread for it?

This is a question for the ages! Starting a dedicated thread too early and it becomes filled with previews, prognostications and profound utterances from game journalists and others who wish to tell us what the game is about, even though they may be just guessing. Start the new game thread too late however, and you miss out on all the previews, prognostication and et cetera. I've been in the car all day and my brain isn't firing on all cylinders yet...

Anyway, since it is likely that most folks who are interested in CK3 are CK2 followers, it is probably OK to keep posting about CK3 in this thread till we have some OOs with actually hands-on impressions. Or not

I thought it was traditional that actual hands-on appears around thread page six.
