So...my entire team has 2 points in weaponsmithing for the tinkerer perk. How do I pick a specific team member to do the weapon stripping? Seems like it's always the highest skill level and if they are all the same, random. I want only 1 person to get the experience for weaponsmithing.

How do I force it? Even going in solo mode still picks a different character to do the actual stripping.

What you are saying doesn't match my recollection. I had a specific character doing the breaking down and modding. I'd send her weapons to be broken down. Then open her inventory and do the breakdown from there. Are you saying that when you break down a weapon, that somehow it randomly chooses which person is going to do it? How are you even getting to the weapon in the first place?

Put everything you want stripped into the inventory of the person to do the striping. Then go into their inventory, select the item to be stripped for parts and then do it.

Edit - what TheMix said
That's exactly what I do. To make it even more of a separation, I also go in solo mode and move the character far away from the rest of the party.

So I open the inventory of the person I want to perform the actual weapon strip. I right click on the weapon. I select strip weapon. I see the percentages of possible outcomes. So far the only indication of which character will do the work is that I'm in the inventory of that person. Once I commit to the stripping, I get a result window showing the outcome, but it ALSO shows who did the stripping in a line of text. Something like "character A strips the weapon and receives <whatever>". Since character A is a screen length away and I'm in Character B's inventory (note A and B both have weaponsmithing 2) it's very weird.

When I leave the inventory the xp gain from the action pops up over Character A's head on the main screen. It's very odd.

The only thing I can think of is that due to everyone having the same skill rating (i.e. 2) in Weaponsmithing, the game picks someone either at random, or the first guy in the party.

I haven't tested enough to note whether it's ALWAYS the first character, or if it's completely random. I also haven't confirmed that the actual experience point value gets added to the character who is reported as doing the action, although like I said, the XP that floats over a character's head when he successfully performs a skill does show up over the wrong character's head.

Shrug. Everyone is as far as they are going to get with weaponsmithing except my action weaponsmith. Once I level him again I can put 2 points into weaponsmithing and bring his skill up to 3. That should remove the problem, since he'll clearly be the character with the highest/best chance of performing that skill.

It just so happens that I've been carrying around a lot of extra crap (guns, mods) and hadn't gotten around do figuring out weaponsmithing until now. It's just bad luck that I choose this particular time (when everyone is the same skill) to start doing my breaking down and modding of weapons.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's either random or picking the first character in the party with the skill (since everyone has the skill and has the same value in the skill). I will test more tonight to see if it's always the first guy or truly random.
TheMix wrote: How are you even getting to the weapon in the first place?
Exactly as you suggest. Open Character B's inventory, right click weapon, select strip weapon, etc. Somehow character A performs the skill check/gets the experience for it.

Could be a weird glitch, could be code getting confused because everyone is equally good at the job, could be working as designed.

*shrug*

At this point I'm inclined to just hold onto everything until my "actual" weaponsmith levels up and reaches skill level 3. Encumbrance is starting to rear its ugly head, but I should be able to make due for awhile yet.

Yeah, I hate making new accounts for stuff.

I did a few google searches but nothing came back. I couldn't even find topics in the vicinity of what I'm experiencing. I'm not going to sweat it, as it's not game changing and should be fixed as soon as I level anyway.

The xp for stripping a weapon at character level 5 with a weaponskill of 2? 2 xp.

This is speculation but that sounds like it might be a side effect of their streamlining. With the director’s cut they made it so party members are “smarter”, such that if you choose “picklock” it will automatically have your best character attempt it, versus the old version where you had to manually choose a person. If all your characters are the same skill level I would assume it’s just random.

That could be. Before I made everyone weaponsmithing rank 2, I only had 2 weaponsmiths in my party. My original, intended weaponsmith who started with rank 1, and Angela Deth, who has rank 2 by default. When I tried to strip a weapon (early on, just to test out the mechanics of the game) it defaulted to Angela doing the work. As I mentioned above, she was also my highest rank weaponsmith at the time.

Unlike the problem I'm having with weaponsmithing, you can *force* a specific party member to do the skill check (for locksmithing, demolitions etc) by going into solo mode and using a specific character to do the skill.

i.e. in party mode, right clicking on a safe results in the highest skilled character being chosen to crack it.

in solo mode, whoever you are controlling at the time is used to crack it, and if that person doesn't have the skill, the chance to crack is shown as 0%.

Weaponsmithing doesn't seem to work this way for whatever reason.

Note: I'm mostly talking about it still because it's interesting, not because it's a huge problem that is annoying me.

Huh. I thought I played the DC. My first game stalled, and I replayed it once the DC came out. And yet, I don't recall any of that. My recollection is that I always told a person to undertake an action... and that person always did it. Maybe I was just so used to the initial way that I did things that way in the DC. And had my skills such that it always worked the way I expected.

You can do that too. At least, I think you can. I've never really done it since there isn't a lot of overlap in my party's skills and just right clicking brings up the correct person and their percentage chance.

There are still some situations, which I suspect are quest related (I haven't paid that close attention) where you need to select the skill from a character's hotbar and use it that way. Most generic situations you can just click on something and if it has more than 1 option it will list all the options you know about, the percentages for each skill, and who will be using that skill.

i.e. if a gate is locked, trapped and alarmed, right clicking on it results in a window with for example:

Brute force - 72% Character B
Picklock - 26% Character D
Demolitions - 78% Character A
Disarm alarm - 56% Character C

You then pick one and that character uses that skill on the gate. It's really quite slick.

For the record, it's not random. It's always the first member of my party.

Also, I tried to put weaponsmithing on my hotbar, but it was not an option when I right clicked an empty spot on my bar. Maybe that's because weaponsmithing only works in your inventory?

Anyway, I'll make one last report when my actual weaponsmith levels up. He's #2 position in the party.

Can someone verify real quick that world map random encounters are over when everyone is dead? I'm sitting on a random encounter map and there is nothing I can interact with and the 3 bandits I can see are dead. Do I just return to the encounter entrance and leave? Was I not able to do that when the encounter first starts? I can't remember if the exit icon was there or not.

The bandits blew a hole in one of my guys and you could see straight through him. Ouch.

Not sure about leaving before you fight. But, yes, you have to find the exit when everyone is dead. It doesn't just "end".

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. This sort of obsessing over every tiny detail is one of the reasons I don't play RPG's much any more. I can't not look in every corner of the map and the idea that I might miss something is paralyzing.

Oddly I had already fought a couple of random encounters and either it didn't occur to me at the time to worry about whether I was "done" or not, or I was confident I was done but lost that confidence this time.

Anyway, back to my OCDRPG. Thanks again.

Oh, for the record, I HATE obsessing, it destroys a lot of my enjoyment but I struggle to "just play" games. Especially RPG's.

Lol, crap. There is a gameplay setting that is "Highest skilled character is used". Either it defaulted to on or I turned it on when I first installed the game.

I bet that is what's causing the wonky weaponsmithing stuff. Will verify after this combat. Could be awhile.

edit: Nope, damn it. Turned it off and the behaviour was the same as before. Really thought that was it. Oh well.

For the record, my designated weaponsmith is now rank 3 in the skill, and he successfully breaks down weapons and gets the XP for it.

Glad you sorted that out. I remember doing the exact same thing, going for weaponsmith 2 with all my guys for the 'tinkerer' perk, I felt it was pretty damn good at the time. I just wish I remembered what it did.

1 extra AP when wearing light armour.

I have characters with tinkerer that don't have ANY armour yet.

I'm planning for the future, I guess. And for the record, you don't get the extra AP if you're wearing nothing. It's light armor or no bonus. Which of course is how it's supposed to work, but I had to check if it was armour != heavy armour or armour = light armour.

Nice. Yeah, as I recall, I wound up skipping the heavier armor pretty much the entire game, due to the fact that your guys move slower in it and also because late game energy weapons completely pwn heavy armor (to the point where you're better off going buck naked instead).

That's still the case apparently. light armour is optimal.

Finally got around to playing this one, and I've run into a bit of an issue. Spoilers ahead, obviously - I guess I can tag them even though the game is a bit older....
Spoiler:
I've made it to California, and have been doing various quests and whatnot. Currently in Hollywood, working through the situation between the Hollywood residents and the folks up in the Bastion. I've sided (loosely) with the interrogator guy (forgot his name) and have given him evidence of the other Church leader's naughtiness. Mr. Spanish Inquisition then puts the beat down on Mr. Nasty, and thanks me for the assistance. So far, so good.

The issue is that when I go topside (I came into the Church via the underground passage and did not pass through Griffin Park), the knights all turn hostile. I can kill them in groups, but everyone except the penitents eventually turns hostile on me, including Meg(?), who asked me to free the penitents. After the slave guards went hostile, I killed them and all of the slaves said "yay!" and left, however, Meg(?) doesn't acknowledge that action and I can only target her (though she does not actively start shooting at me). Same with any other characters outside the Church - all go hostile.

I tried going back into the "classroom" area inside the Church after I got into it with some of the topside guards, and the personnel (shopkeepers and whatnot) inside the Church then went hostile. I've also tried talking to McDade(?) to ID him as the "Sad Man", but nothing. No dialogue options, I can examine the mask on his table, but nothing changes. At this point it seems my only option is to kill everyone. I'm guessing this particular quest is bugged somehow, or something I did broke a trigger somewhere. Disappointing.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!
BTW, this is with the Director's Cut.

Did you visit the brothel in Hollywood and get that quest to break up the S&M specialist and her boyfriend? You should do that. It'll help wrap up things in the Hollywood area quite nicely and also give you a shortcut into the Bastion.

I remember running into that problem too, and (for me) it was possible to sneak around the knights, since they only went hostile when I got close to them.

Not entirely sure on my make up of the group but as Im creating Im thinking......and I have no idea what toaster repair is. Im not taking it but it will turn out I should have probably lol.

Me - 2 skills in each group Im guessing.
Assault rifles only
Higher coor and charisma
field medic and lockpicking
leadership and weaponsmith

2nd guy
Shotgun
coor and speed
computers and safecracking
barter and perception

3rd gal
sniper..
speed and intell
demo and surgeon
outdoor and smartass

4th guy
smg
aware and luck
mechanic and alarm
animal and brute (brute if I take str and go heavy instead of handgun)

Quirks I have no idea on. If I think it could help the character Ill give them one if it also doesn't hurt them excessively. Or I may not do quirks at all.

And I found my first toaster..DOH!

Learning my way around this still. Who has what skills and so on. Not sure how much ammo Ill need. trying to see how long what I started with lasts. So far 3 fights and I still have about 20 rounds each. Im still poor. have $199 creds.

I wish there was some way to turn off certain sounds. Like when you hover over your characters it beeps each one and that is loud and distractingly annoying. Also the tower when I got it working started beeping Morse code and would not shut up the entire map. Its grating on my one nerve.

From what I recall, toasters are essentially high-end treasure chests, but there are very, very few of them. If I'm not mistaken, though, you can go back to them later, say if you get an NPC that can repair them.

For the most part, yes, you can come back to the toasters. There's one notable exception - without too much spoilers, you'll eventually be leaving the Arizona desert and will not be able to come back. So if you're really into toasters, you'll want to clear them out before you leave.

Your party set up looks good. Thumbs up for picking a single weapon specialty for each guy.

BTW, if you're having trouble opening a safe or locked door or weak wall, you can use a grenade instead.

One other pro tip: anything that's gray, you can safely sell. Anything that's white, you should hang on to, a lot of NPCs will take random white items for a minor reward.

Just been hitting the sell junk so far except for some gloves I didn't need. They were weapon gloves.

My guys are blind and cant hit a wall. A plant can slither across the map and bite them but they cant hit it right beside them. Everyone one of them will miss the whole round bang miss bang miss bang miss bang miss bang moss. Frustration is this game.
