Why dont they give us a Walking Dead game? - They have!

Postby Daehawk » Sun Feb 26, 2012 8:57 pm

It's really popular right now. Zombies in general are too. It would start you in a random location. From there you'd look for other survivors while trying to avoid walkers, roving gangs, and bad people who are out for themselves. Either bunker down or travel the roads all the while scavenging for supplies, weapons, ammo, food...you name it you need it. Maybe even have to find and repair vehicles and get gas for them. Basically The Walking Dead but without all the soap opera crap and you control the whole thing. The ultimate goal would be to find a cure or out last them or destroy them while restarting the world. You could name you main little group and such. As you progressed and things became more complicated you'd simply designate a general goal for others. perhaps have group 2 look for a new water supply. Or group 3 find new people...etc etc.

I'd imagine it would look like a Fallout 2 game or something similar. Maybe with updated graphics. The new X-com graphical style perhaps.

Maybe Brian Fargo could make his new Wasteland in The Walking Dead. We should petition him :)

Cool browser game with some of the features you mentioned above. Has a release on iOS as well.

Edit: And I am totally down with the game design they discuss on that video. It's not the game you were asking for, but Telltale does a pretty good job.

Edit 2: Looks like Gary Whitta of Book of Eli fame (writer) and Quarter to Three regular is involved with the design. This is going to rock.

A zombie game! We've never had one of those before. Someone should make one!

Just having zombies as the enemy does not make a game a zombie game. There haven't been many games that really capture the zombie survival vibe yet. There are some in development though.

Sadly, I don't think Telltale's Walking Dead game will be one of them. Dead Island has the zombie fighting mechanic down fairly well, but lacked the kind of RPG/resource management trappings that zombie fans are waiting for.

We want something that a combination of Rebuild and Dead Island with a triple-A budget. Well, that's what I want.

I thought Fort Zombie was going to be that game, but they just stopped supporting it. Allegedly in the Fall there was talk of one more "final" update, but I'm guessing Sword of the Stars pays the bills, not zombie simulators.

Fort Zombie had potential, but even after numerous patches they couldn't even get the control scheme working well.

Dead State looks cool, but they have several long lived threads about "why we haven't had an update in so long" - which makes me think it will end up as a FPS with power-ups.

-

Fort Night looks like a undisguised rip off of Fort Zombie (with airport tycoon II graphics), a game I bought for $5.99 that sucked pure ass.

Im playing a fairly good zombie game right now called Trapped Dead. It's close to what I'd like but not quiet. I want more an overall leader role sim. Like Evil genius.

Fort Zombie was such a disappointment for me. I really really wanted it to be good and they just mucked it up so badly. I'd check out Project Zomboid. They should be releasing a rather large update in the next month or so. It has a TON of potential since they are very mod friendly.

They really seem to get the genre. Just hoping it doesn't die out before they can get more stuff into it.

As someone who shares Daehawk's interest interest in a different sort of zombie game - my preference would be a sort of strategy/builder/rpg builder with a strong sandbox game that would allow survivors to experience early desperate survival, different sites (farm, village, town, city, military base, isolated Black Mesa lab) and stress different factors (resource gathering, zombie defense, hostile brigands) - I've neglected most of the titles mentioned. I don't game much and when I do, I like living in the game to dipping a toe in. Probably if some rich genius made a game with Dwarf Fortress-detailed-planning along with a graphically vivid environment and robust game mechanics where one game you might be concerned mainly with rebuilding and the next a migrating zombie horde or...well, I'd probably have my gaming time filled up for a long time.

Anyhow, thanks for the links.

Here is some gameplay footage.

http://www.gamesradar.com/walking-dead- ... play-demo/

It seems like one of those games that makes you think it will be super cool (Heavy Rain) and then winds up leaving you bored. They said this first episode will be very cinematic, which makes think I'll be sitting around watching the screen wondering when I get to play. Will it be on rails (LA Noir) or will I be able to explore and have freedom (Project Zomboid)?? I'd pay $10 to find out, but not $22.

Well, since it's Telltale, I'm expecting it to be more of an adventure game. I'm hoping that once the game is released you can get each episode for cheap, as I *think* the $22 is for the season pass (I might be wrong there...it's not very clear)

Yes it for the full season. I have it preordered on telltales site, with the change to be a zombie in a future episode!

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was the full season, but the item name left off the season pass part, so while I was reasonably sure it was the season pass from that section you quoted, I wouldn't have been surprised if it was just for episode 1 (though very much higher price than their other games if it was so)

I'm enjoying it...I had to break out my x-box controller for the PC as I was having some issues with the keyboard and mouse (didn't see any options to configure the controls and just not used to WASD...died once because of it). It's basically an adventure game with some QTEs scattered about to ramp up the tension, but I like The Walking Dead setting so it's fun to be in it.

I guess you have to pay in advance for all 5 episodes, but they are coming out one a month. Which means the game will be complete for the Steam holiday sale.

I would suggest giving Rogue Survivor a spin. It is an roguelike game that focuses on the zombie apocalypse specifically, and does an good job of it, in my opinion.

I purchased on the playstation3 network, or whatever it is. Wife is a big fan of the series so I thought I'd surprise her and let her watch me play. FYI - if you buy it, you have to also download the demo AND the purchase. I guess the purchase just unlocks the demo.

Yeah that's pretty common on PSN if there's a demo for a game; you end up downloading the demo and the ability small unlock file

Unless the mechanism changes later on the QTEs are QTE lite. Every time I have seen one it has been pound Q rapidly, then hit E when the "crosshairs" are lined up. The other action sequence is generally "mouse aim for the head and click"

What I find interesting is the dialog with limited time to answer. You don't get to sit there and think about what answer will play out best for you, the clock is running from the moment the choices are displayed and it's not a lot of time. Only once so far have I failed to pick in time and it played out naturally. It's an interesting mechanic that changes the way I play the game. I was the guy in SWTOR that would think long and hard then escape out of a conversation again and again looking for the perfect path.

In the first half hour the choices you have to make will make you feel some sympathy for Rick in the comic/show. These are NOT easy choices.
