Just an update on the security situation...keep in mind that the 'Dial In Authenticator' is not a real authenticator and in any case doesn't work with D3. Don't use it for Diablo. If your account is rolled back once and then you get hacked again, you will not be able to use the RMAH. You can only get two roll backs total, if you get hacked a third time it'll be time for you to buy another copy :(. So get those authenticators!!!

Sadly, the only non-dial in authenticator I could use is the keychain thingy.

You can get Inferno-mode gear with Inferno-mode modifiers in late nightmare. A 400 DPS weapon shouldn't run you that much, and will make everything up until you hit Inferno feel much less painful. This also works for armor, but the jump from ilvl 59 ilvl 60-63 isn't as massive for armor.

Got lucky with loot drops yesterday and today. Yesterday it was a 3-socket chestplate that blew away what I was wearing. Then tonight I got a rare 1H mace that upped my DPS by 350. Has a really cool flaming effect on it as well.

While I was more or less cruising through Nightmare as it was, these two items allowed me to basically beat the Act 3 end bosses without breaking a sweat. Damn you Blizzard - just when I think I'm finally getting a little frustrated with the loot tables, you find a way to give me one more little shot of heroin.

Rage Shear is fine IMO. Loyalty Alacrity is just dumb sounding.

They've actually really improved their random name generator significantly since Diablo 2. There it was pretty much purely random and the names were frequently nonsensical and sometimes even ran counter to the item's actual mechanics.

In D3 they actually take the item's base type and affixes into account. For example, I have a pair of shoulder pieces that are called Gambler's Wings; they've got both magic find and gold find. Perfect name.

There's still some duds (see: Loyalty Alacrity), but it's a nice small touch IMO.

I go from ~3600 to ~7600 dps and all you can comment on is the dumb name of my old weapon. Where's the crying emoticon?

Sadly I didn't get much time to play after securing my new toy. I blew through the spider queen's lair and the spider queen in no time. Also, my earthquake damage is ridiculous.

As was said, this is an awesome idea. I just want to point out it would totally suck for me too, which is why I'm not doing it, for now. Well that, and I'm too low level anyway.

I do NOT want to buy an AH weapon that is so good that I have zero expectation of replacing it until I hit inferno. That would be the very definition of suck. Imagine starting the game with a full suit of armour that is so good nothing in the first 2 or 3 difficulty levels could compete.

The casino aspect would be gone. Ugh. I need some hope of improving my guy. If I know I'm not going to get a better weapon, well that does two things. Reduces my expectation and enjoyment of loot that actually drops for me. And reduces the challenge of making it to the end.

Now I'm all for being spoonfed. Normal difficulty + AoE build is just about the best thing ever. I don't want it too challenging or I whine like I've already done. But I want some challenge or it feels like something is missing. And I want loot to at least be potentially useful, otherwise my interest level decreases a little.

My view of the game after completing normal for the story is that it's all about getting to 60 and getting to inferno and then dying... a lot. I had more or less given up on my barb as Hell difficulty was becoming very frustrating. This may be the boost I need to get through to Inferno... so I can get *really* frustrated.

I get it. My monk is on hiatus while I see if my low ball bids get lucky. I'm really cheap, and by bidding low it takes some of the edge off using the AH to begin with. :D

I also understand that how I like to play and what I enjoy is not always the same for others.

I may check out hardcore at some point. I never did with the others, but the level curve on this game is much shorter so I might consider it. It took me 11 hours to finish normal on my DH and only had one (dumb) death. I guess on hardcore that trip would have been slightly shorter. ;)

It's definitely different. The best thing (besides an adrenaline rush when your screen turns red) is that there is a built in item sink that doesn't exist in SC --- death. It'll take a lot longer to get to item saturation in that market than in SC.

Maybe they could create a Cinemax version of HC -- Not really porn, but sort of, where upon death you lose the items you're wearing, but not the character progress :)

I'm having difficulty getting excited about playing any more. I haven't even finished the game on normal and I have to convince myself to log on now.

Hopefully, once I force myself to get past normal, I'll find something to keep my interest in HC.

I can remember when the hooks fell out while I was playing D2. One day I was a bleary eyed loot hunter, the next day I couldn't figure out what the game's appeal was. I think that happens to a lot of MMO players too.

In this case, the hooks just never set properly to begin with. It's a rare game that can make everyone happy.

If you don't like it, you don't like it. I don't think you are doing yourself any favors by forcing yourself to play. What drives me forward is opening up the rest of the skills, improving gear and overcoming the challenges of random combinations of boss attributes that can range from trivial to holy hell that's just cruel.

I definitely feel like there is more tactical depth than I ever found in D2. I also like that there really isn't any grind like there was in D2. At least not until you hit inferno... maybe I will lose interest there.

I had something nice happen to me yesterday. I don't have a lot of gold because I suck as a player so I always have to get top level gear to keep going. Because the damned commodity market is still down, I desperately needed some gems. I asked for a couple of just plain Radiant Amethysts and Topaz gems. I only needed a couple. This guy sold me a four of them for 2k gold, then threw in 8 square radiants as well!!! He then gave me some level 50 rares too, and sold me a very nice amulet for 10K. There are still good people in the world! :D

Why do people take hacks so personally? It's amazing how people really somehow believe the internet is a safe place and there's no way they could have been hacked, it must be Blizzard's problem, yadda yadda yadda. Right now, some idiot is trying to hack my Windows Live ID. He got ahold of my email and password and keeps trying to change the password, which he can't do because he can't access my two step verified email account. I don't even care. My self esteem is not tied up with the sanctity of my computer I guess. Shit happens. Fix it and move on.

So my dad was over today helping me put some furniture together. He notices the box for my new video card on the table. He asks what it's for and I say it's because my old one died and I needed it to play Diablo 3. My dad was a big WoW fan but left it a couple of years ago. He never really played any of the Diablos. He starts asking the usual questions about whether he'd like it, etc. So I suggest he comes upstairs and I'll fire the game up and show him.

SERVERS DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE.

This was at 11am EST.

And so started the conversation about how it's not really an online game like WoW (ie: no subscription fees) but yes, you need to always be connected and at the moment we couldn't play because of server maintenance.

It wasn't a great first impression. I ended up giving him a trial key and my game DVD and he's going to try it out later today once the servers are back up.

They do have scheduled weekly maintenance for D3, right? Last week it was Tuesday but I'm guessing they moved it to Wednesday so people would be able to play WoW while Diablo 3 is down "for a few hours"? :)

They have not said that there is going to be regularly scheduled downtime, but I think with all the changes that are coming we can expect maintenance windows like these for awhile. AH says RMAH is coming next Tuesday for example, I'm sure that'll take a maintenance window.
