Kentucky Route Zero

Post by kganey »

I'm not much for adventure games, but I'm glad I picked up Act I of Kentucky Route Zero. It has great atmosphere and it fulfills its promise of adventure without puzzles. KRZ is more like a guided meditation than a traditional game. Many times, the choices you make in the dialogue options remake the world. It feels collaborative in its approach to story rather than coercive. It also felt fresh like 30 Flights of Loving, without being on rails like 30 Flights.

Has anyone else checked it out?

Would a person who loved the way Walking Dead worked like this game or be disappointed by it?

I hadn't played The Walking Dead so I downloaded the free episode to my iPad 2 and played for a little more than a half-hour. Based on that limited experience, I can see what is special about The Walking Dead. It is a lot more open than the previous Telltale Games I'd played (I think I played a little of Puzzle Agent and a couple episodes of Sam and Max years ago). I think that if you like The Walking Dead, then you'll like KRZ. I think KRZ gives players even more control over what is happening, but they share the "dialogue options are fateful" mechanic.

What am I supposed to be seeing at that site? I see a graphic and it allows a link to a "limits and demonstrations' page with another graphic, but I see no link to information of any sort. Maybe I am being dense?

That trailer looks intriguing as hell.
Simple, but effective, as far as I'm concerned.

Episode 2 is out, but I think I'll replay Episode 1 first to get back in the spirit of things so I don't have impressions yet.

I too am very intereseted in this game, but I can't do episodic gaming. Even the name of the game is cool. But, I'll have to wait until they release all the chapters together.

Especially with the individual episodes being so short, I can definitely see this as a wait-for-the-collection item. I think that the experience may work best in a single shot. My replay of the first episode made it seem a little stale.

I through both episodes last weekend. The second episode has really moved things in a direction that I didn't expect. There is a lot of great, creative work in episode two, but the game makers introduce a bunch of new characters without adding any serious depth to the characters already present. At moments, I felt like the game was a cousin to Thirty Flights of Loving (which is a good thing). I found myself really losing a sense of the characters goals and motivations. Definitely an interesting game. It just isn't moving in as compelling a direction for me.

FWIW, Bill Harris disagrees. He thought that Episode 2 improved on Episode 1.

I've had this on my wishlist for a while, just waiting for a package deal on some Steam sale when my defenses get low. Trailers look great.

I'm part way through episode three, and just wanted to give this game a big bump.

Part of me says that this game is what PC adventure games were always meant to be. Your involvement as a player in the unfolding story so so subtle that you have no idea exactly to what extent you are determining the outcome. I suppose someone could go back and play it lots of times to see how the different choices play out, but that makes about as much sense to me as dissecting a pet you love to see how it works.

Or so. [sigh]

Progress! I might actually play this in another year! :D

(In case my tone is confusing, the game actually is very good, or at-least the first act. I simply decided to wait till all were done before playing any further.)

Wanna impress me? Finish the fucker.

I thought Part One was so great when I played it when it was first released that I vowed to wait until it was done to pick it up again.

I'm not bitter.

Your wish is their command:
Kentucky Route Zero, the beloved point-and-click adventure game that has been releasing in episodic increments since 2013, will put out its fifth and final act on January 28, 2020. The final act will appear as part of a complete edition of the game titled Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition, which will include all five acts and also the four brief interludes that were released between each act.
Maybe next year, maybe no go
