New FREE Unreal Tournament

I remember the old days when we had a blast playing UT with the GG/OO bunch (anybody remember Metalhed with the Bender skin?). Epic Games just announced it is developing a crowdsourced, completely free Unreal Tournament. Not F2P, but free. Sounds like what they want to do is to charge for mods and Epic will take a cut of those earnings.

Sounds like a lot of fun to be had. I hope my PC is still up to snuff. Can't wait.

It looks like a completely open development environment. This should be really interesting.

I do hope the base gameplay and weapons are much more like the original UT rather than UT2003-04. Not talking about game modes, just the basic mechanics. I think Original UT had that nailed.

later iterations of Unreal Tournament made a mistake with removing the saw-blade launcher from the game.

I felt they just got too fast. I like a slightly lower paced game of deathmatch. DOOM II was perfect.

Oh Baby, come to papa! I was a pretty hardcore clanner back in the day. As long as they include the snot gun and of course the impact hammer it's all good!

Plus, they have to have the announcer - Head Shot! Killing Spree! Monster Kill! Rampage!

Damn, now I want to reinstall and see how it will run... I think I have UT2004 around here somewhere...

By sitting in a corner and pointing his rifle down the only possible approach so that he only had to click his mouse everytime something moved. It was certainly within the rules of the game, but was cheesy as hell.

Awesome CTF map...so many great battles

What about Conduit? That's the small map we played Domination on with the round upper platform and second domination point below. I remember a few epic matches where neither team could gain an advantage...even one that lasted for almost an hour because we couldn't break the tie. So much fun!

They need to bring back the objective based assault maps. I loved them in the original UT but the later iterations took them out entirely.

Unreal Tournament is the only essentially pure multiplayer FPS game I've ever even liked, and I loved both the original UT and UT2004. Really looking forward to this.

i was also on Zaxxon's server (as the gold robot). fun times! i was way more into Halo (Windows version) then, but i tried to make time for the MP matches whenever i could.

It definitely has me thinking about a reinstall, but I just don't think I have the time to play right now...and I think that I probably packed my copy away while doing early prep for an upcoming move

As a reminder, anyone who has the original (non-torrent) OO Morrowind DVD also has the complete mod pack for the old server. I had a gigabyte of so of free space when I burned them, so I tossed that in as well.

My name is Michiel van den Bos and one of the two main composers for the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament. It's been a while and my memory's a bit foggy, but my music has been featured in classic maps like Curse][, Codex, Facing Worlds, Tempest and many others. I've been composing for games ever since, including the universally praised soundtrack for Age of Wonders 3.

I'm writing here because I was getting messages and e-mails telling me I should, due to the announcement of the new UT.

I was wondering if there is any interest in me getting involved and I'm sure I can get Alex to join in too.

I'm in the same boat. I even have a new drive, but it's more of a pain to open the case up and install the drive than it is worth. At least for now.

I never played online with the GoneGold folks, but I had a blast playing UT at a LAN club way back when. This was in Ann Arbor ca. 2001.

Count me in for any revival that happens.

Hmmm $7.49 on sale at Steam now. That is cheaper than a new DVD drive. It would be good to know if we are doing this before the sale ends.

I have UT3: Black Edition Already installed... just saying.

Well since it will not activate on Steam and $7.50 is still cheaper than a dvd drive I went ahead and bought it.
