Rise of the Tomb Raider

Post by Grifman »

Follow on to the Tomb Raider reboot:

http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/38fz ... omb-raider

More details here:

http://www.polygon.com/e3-2014/2014/6/9 ... omb-raider
"In her first adventure, Lara Croft was forged into a true survivor, but she glimpsed a deeper, secret world," the announcement reads. "In the next chapter of her journey, Lara must use her survival skills and wits, learn to trust new friends, and ultimately accept her destiny as the Tomb Raider."
Too bad it won't be out until the 2015 holidays. I'm really looking forward to this, I absolutely loved the last one!

Yeah, the only disappointing thing about that trailer is the reveal of the release timeframe... unless the holiday they mean is valentine's day or maybe MLK day.

Best reboot ever (I am excluding the Arkham games because there was no definitive Batman series before that).

The only disappointing thing? How about:

According to the official announcement, the game will take place in locations around the world and launch for Xbox One. Other platforms for the game have not yet been announced.

I'm pretty certain there will be other versions. Other than exclusives (which are relatively few) most releases get most major platforms. If it was an exclusive, it would have been touted as such.

According to Kotaku, Rise of the Tomb Raider hits PC "a few months" after it is released on the Xbox One. I guess it is coming out in November of this year, so for PC that's early 2016.

PS4 users have to wait a year. I guess the only good thing about that is perhaps getting a GotY version on release? Otherwise...ouch.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

As long as I can get it eventually, I don't really care when it's released. Life is busy enough as it is that I usually only have time for 1 or 2 games on the go at a time. I'll just wait.

Looking forward to this. I liked the first TR ok but didn't care for anything after that until Legacy or whatever it was. Then I really loved the last one though I have to agree with detractors in there was a severe lack of tombs in it.

Looking forward to it. Loved the reboot.

But:
There is no better name for this game than Rise of the Tomb Raider. Lara is rising, growing into the fearless archaeologist and daredevil we've come to know for the past 20 years.
Not this again. She just killed a freaking god after leaving a trail of a hundred corpses. She is risen.

The first game was about survival. The new one is about coming into her own. No need to freak out over the name or a publicity statement. From what I've read, she's more confident in her abilities and what she is doing - she's no longer a "rookie".

Good overview of changes to the game from the first one. As the narrator says, "They basically took everything I liked from the first one and doubled down on it". Can't wait.

Re: Rise of the Tomb Raider

I put a ton of time into the game this weekend. I think I am pretty close to being done with the story. It's kind of disappointing that I am almost done after one weekend of solid play, but it was a weekend of solid play. I am nowhere close to 100% completion and in this game I see that as achievable without burnout.

Initially I was worried about burning out on the gathering and crafting, but after you get started it isn't necessary to just go scavenging like I felt like I had to do in the beginning. In fact, I was building weapon upgrades I didn't necessarily need just so less of the resources I picked up would go to waste.

I think they put a little more puzzle solving into the story stuff this time, as well as 9 optional puzzle tombs. On the other hand, there is still a little of action oriented stuff, both from a quick-time action sequence perspective and third person shooter action. You can stealth a lot of the game, but you will be in straight up firefights quite a bit as well. Only a few times have I bothered using a weapon other than the bow and those were on "bosses." For the most part the quick time stuff I mentioned isn't, for the most part, watch for which button to press. If there is a button prompt it is Y (your melee attack) and it's more about timing than reaction time. The other action-y stuff is just using your normal controls in an "oh my god if I don't run like hell right now I am dead" sort of way, and that's really just A to jump and X to... well... do everything else Lara can do. The good news is that what you need to do is generally pretty clear. They use lightning to guide the way without being over the top about it.

I'm sure those more critical than I am will have lots more to complain about, but it's just what I wanted after the reboot. If I have any complaint it's that they gate your toolkit to limit where you can go in the open world. I've spent too much time trying to figure out how to get through something only to later be handed exactly what I needed.

Do they still have these amazing tombs that are pretty long to get through only to have the final master treasure room open to the sky and you could have just climbed in or used a heli? :)

Since I play most PC games with the xbox controller, the only difference is the size of the screen.... and in this case, the wait to play it.

Coming out for PC in less than 2 weeks and I am very excited. Tomb Raider was a real surprise for me and a great game, and this game looks to build on that. Been watching some gameplay videos without trying to spoil myself very much. Looks like it's going to be a great game. Already pre-ordered it on GMG.

No OO love for TR? Or did everyone who was interested play it on Xbox? Anyway I am at the third area. The only thing I don't like so far is how it sometimes forces you to go forward when you are not done exploring. For example:
Spoiler:
Laura said she should go to her camp to craft some poison arrows. I tried, but I didn't have enough ingredients. But before I could go look for more, it flashes to a cut scene, then mercenaries are invading the area - poor design!

I would so completely and whole heartedly buy and play nothing but RTR right now if it weren't for: American Truck Simulator, XCom2, and holding out to see if The Division is going to be really good or crap out like Rainbow Six: Seige. In short, mo' money, mo' problems.

I was waiting for it to drop on the PS4 but I just got it 'free' with a new laptop purchase. Knowing me, I'll still get the PS4 version as well - wouldn't be the first thing I've double-dipped on. :P

I was playing Wasteland 2 DC until ROTTR arrived but I need to finish up with the Arizona region (only need to complete Damonta) to get to a good stopping point, then I plan to dive in. Will probably start this weekend. Very much looking forward to it.

I badly need some help. I can't make that jump where Lara is attached to the rope. I've tried over a dozen times and feel like a complete doof. I don't know what I should do. If I swing at the ice wall, I miss and swing around, I can't seem to jump towards it either. I don't know what order I should do anything - it seems like I should jump with the spacebar, the hit E to grab with my ice axe but nothing seems to work for. This right now if the equivalent of tumbling down the river in the last game where I probably died a couple of dozen times until I could get past all of the obstacles. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is at the beginning of the game? Regardless, you should be swinging back and forth first a few times to get your arc wide and then jump at the apex of the swing towards the ice wall. Then axe.

You mean with the bow? You need the talent and you need to be zoomed in first. Then when you pull the bow all the way back when you get it over their head you'll get a red diamond. Move on to the next head and when you get the diamond let go. I was having a great time killing three at once around the campfire with the next level

Well, it's not working for me. I pull out my bow, target their head, zoom in, draw the bowstring back and nothing happens. At least most of the time. Some rare times it will work but most of the time, I get nothing. The concept seems really cool, but the execution seems lacking. I've tried ordering my actions differently, targeting them, then zooming in, the charging the shot, etc but nothing seems to work. I wish I could figure it cause it seems really cool :(
