Grand Theft Auto V - Finally On The PC

Post by jztemple2 »

I couldn't find a GTAV thread already here, so I started one. Grand Theft Auto V (some of you may have heard about it) has been scheduled for release on the PC and delayed several times, but now looks to be finally released on April 14th. Today Rockstar announced that you can begin preloading Grand Theft Auto V on April 7th. I guess they are really serious about releasing it on the 14th. Any bets on how big the release day patch will be?

I can't wait to play this and the quality time with my GF as she watches me hit the strip clubs, run people over, rob banks, cap punks in the ass, and whatever Trevor feels like doing.

I'm hoping the online loads faster than on the ps3. The load times are epic. Next gen consoles have the same issue so I guess I shouldn't hold my breath.

Yeah, I'm real curious to see how this runs on various computers. I seem to remember when GTA IV finally made it to PC it ran like total crap. I own it for the Xbox360 but of course because I'm a monkey I would entertain purchasing it for PC if it runs on my older machine.

Oh man, I was hopeful it would run decent, but totally forgot how bad GTA4 was on the PC until you reminded me. Maybe they'll learn from past mistakes?

It certainly seems like they put a lot of effort to get this done right, so I do think there's a good shot it will be decent. I certainly will be waiting. (And leveling up on the PS3 version. :) )

I also don't know how much of a problem GTA IV was because of the integration with Games for Windows Live. Maybe now the game engine is at the sweet-spot for the average PC gamer's computer. I just don't know, but I'm definitely watching.

I meet the recommend specs, so I should be fine. I can't believe how large the game is. 50+ gb. LOL...

 Holy bloat, Batman!

My current computer was purchased as a direct result of GTA IV completely failing to run on my previous one. The rule of thumb I worked with was "I should be able to buy any game I want without looking at the specs, and the day I can't is the day I need to upgrade" ... I installed GTA IV and all I saw was artifacts and half-formed landscapes. Completely unplayable.

Worked beautifully on my new computer, though, which is now close to retirement age.

I look forward to installing GTA V on my next computer.

They are terrible parents? I won't even play the game when my daughter is around. She's in the third grade and she's playing minecraft. I think that's way more age appropriate. (But way more annoying.)

I guess that would be me. My 11 year old son plays GTA, Saints Row, you name it. We also watch Family Guy and American Dad together. I take the approach to expose him to everything and educate him on when things are appropriate and when they aren't.

You should give them porn and scotch while you're at it. In for a penny, in for a pound, and all that.

I'm in the camp that thinks letting kids play the GTA games is questionable at best.

I guess that would make him the really cool dad . Seriously however, eleven does seem pretty young. On the other hand I was reading adult (not XXX, just not juvenile) novels at age eleven, so I guess it's a development thing.

By the way, are we expecting a midnight start to pre-loading?

And one more thing... I got my GTAV PC pre-order through Green Man Gaming in what I seem to remember as a order for a Steam key. However, I noticed that running up to March 31st, the cut-off to the pre-order bonuses, that GMG wasn't mentioning a Steam key on their pre-order page. Does this mean that folks are getting a key to unlock and download the game directly from Rockstar?

I have the same philosophy - hell, I've even let them watch Archer with me from time to time.

I still won't play GTA when they're around.

I support introducing 11- or 12-year-olds to R-rated entertainment. They'll be exposed to it in the wild, and parents should discuss what's there.

But buying GTA for 7- and 8-year-olds is nuts, especially when the parents probably aren't keeping an eye on it anyway.

This game will be delivered as a Rockstar Games Social Club redemption code. Customers will require a free Rockstar Games Social Club account to play.
and by the price it has "other DRM" rather than the steam icon.

Yeah thats the issue for me. My neighbour lets his 11 yera old son play GTA V etc etc and yet has never seen it himself, hates games and has nothign to do with gaming.

How can he be sitting down with his son ensuring he understands what he is seeing and doing and passing on any relevant advice. He isn't and it's the same for most of them, it keeps their kids off their back.

I let my son watch The Flash and some 12 movies but only after I have and then I sit with him and check he is ok and understands what is going on, he wants to watch Arrow now but I feel it's a step up from The Flash and is darker and more violent.

Nothing wrong with adults making informed decisions the problem is most arent informed are they.

Now downloading GTA V from the Rockstar Warehouse (hmm, I thought I was getting a Steam key from Green Man Gaming, but no matter). 60.04 GB to download, going to take a while

I have this wild hope that after all the delays they are going to do a surprise for everyone by unlocking early. I'll find out in... 12H 45M . The bottleneck isn't on my end either, but I kind of suspected that would happen. The servers are probably being slammed right now. And it will be worse when the 11 year olds get out of school

 Ya I highly doubt they will release a week early, but that would be a smart move. Their servers are going to get creamed.

Preload finally completed.

Rockstar download server has not been consistent, probably due to load. During my 5 hours of downloading, it has lost connection to server numerous times, and crawl @ 50KB/sec at times.

After preload it shows how long the game will be unlocked. currently it sit @ 5 days 21 hours to go. :)

After ten and a half hours, I'm still not there yet:

That 4.5 MB/sec is about the max from my ISP, but often it just sputters down to almost nothing. I really, really hope there isn't a day one patch, it will be a nightmare.

Finally downloaded and I get this message:

Hmm, five days seventeen and a half hours from now is 7pm EDT next Monday, assuming my half-asleep math is correct. Seems a bit early, but maybe because it's direct from Rockstar, not from Steam.

But I thought violent video games don't influence kids.....

Anyway, GTA is where I draw the line for mine too. I'm pretty convinced I shouldn't be playing it either, but I do anyway.

Thankfully I'm the only kid in the house . I've already notified my wife that GTA V will be unlocking next Monday at 7p EDT. Of course I won't be playing it till 10p, that is, after Dancing With The Stars is over. I don't really care for the show, but it's one of those compromises that couples make. I did tell her that it's probably for the better, as I'm assuming the servers will be slammed for the first couple of hours anyway. That's my story and I'm sticking to it

Trying to start the game right now, but it apparently first needs to download a 5 353 MB update/unlocker and the connection to the server keeps going down, not really a surprise . Well, I can't really start playing till Dancing With The Stars is over anyway, by order of She Who Must Be Obeyed

UPDATE: Sorry, 353 MB patch needs to be downloaded. The server connection keeps dropping after about 5 MB. So, maybe having to wait three hours isn't going to be a bad idea at all.

UPDATE 2: After about ten minutes of absolutely no progress past about a third of the download bar filled, I canceled and restarted the game. Dumb move, as I now have about a one-twentieth of a filled bar. And the connection to the server is lost again....
