If it's a video game it goes here.

Hmmm, maybe I was mistaken and she hadn't finished training for that skill.

I just restarted anyway. Just noticed there was a mod that would make them rank up to the specialty I selected in the character pool. Had gotten tired of guys I wanted for Rangers ending up as Specialists.

Quite correct. The skill bar is always exactly as long as needed to hold every skill a soldier has without flipping between pages.

So having failed miserably and repeatedly at commander/ironman, I've gone back to just regular commander so I can see some late game tech again and just experience the rest of the game, since I've been through the start of the game umpteen times.

Obviously I'm doing well given the freedom to reload, and I did eventually reload but only after a surprising amount of progress first. It was surprising since I was taking a LOT more risks than I would in my ironman games, but the gambles were paying off.

The problem is now they've given me what appears to be an unwinnable mission. I need to protect a relay, but they start armodon Andromedon (power suited guy) right beside it and he just hits it for 10 hp every turn. Even sprinting to him through 2 pods of enemies only gets his attention about 50% of the time. Even the fliers archons with him focus on the relay on occasion, even after I shoot them. They really, really want that relay dead. I've managed to stop them a couple of times, but the armadon Andromedon weapon lights a fire right beside it on the first turn of the mission. The fire burns the rest of the mission and as far as I can tell, burns the relay to destruction eventually. With no way to put out the fire, I'm at a loss.

So even with magnificent  tactics and a lot of luck, the relay just burns to the ground anyway. As far as I can tell, if all the enemies on the map disappeared after the first turn, I'd still lose the relay eventually. With the presence of a pod of enemies on the other side of the relay (even if I kill the pod guarding the relay in time) and reinforcements called in sometime between killing the first 2 pods and attacking the 3rd pod (the one guarding the relay) I am able to reach, let alone kill all the enemies on the map before the relay burns to the ground.

Frustrating. I've tried many times, but it's starting to look impossible. Literally.

edit: No sooner had I written this, than yet another attempt caused the ai to leave the store before engaging. With him out of the store I was able to burn him down to his automated form. He did charge the relay one last time and hit it, but without his weapon he didn't keep the fire burning and it burned out without taking the relay with it. I managed to engage the last pod during its patrol AWAY from the relay, so it wasn't in LOS for them to kill it while fighting me.

Ta da! Took about 10+ tries, the only difficulty was getting the ai to stop firing on the relay. Staying alive, killing aliens, neither was a problem. Winning the mission had nothing to do with tactics or even good RNG for my shots. Just the ai deciding to do one thing instead of another. Ah well. It'd done. Team is pretty beat up as I tried to shake things up, but everyone is alive.

If you choose Restart Mission from the load menu, sometimes the starting positions change. I've gotten around unwinnable conditions that way a time or two.

Nice! Maybe it follows up on the end scene:
Spoiler:
The pink tentacle-like things coming out of the deep... Terror from the Deep?
But you've seen who's in heaven

I was kind of hoping for a brand new game around the terror content.

If it's a full blown expansion I guess that would be ok.

Maybe they'll introduce some kind of mechanism where losing a guy or two on a mission isn't the end of the world.

But seriously, unless it's horse armor DLC (unlikely), I'm pretty much their little bitch at this point.

TLW is hard, no doubt; I lost at least three games before I finally got one going that's looking like a winner. Which I am still playing, and probably will be for another week or two. After that I'll need to take a break from this game before I buy an expansion -- I've put a stupid number of hours into TLW. Nice to know it will be waiting for me when I'm ready to kick vanilla alien butt again.

Although, let's be honest, for me, they didn't even need to do all this "marketing announcement" stuff. Just say "new X-Com" expansion and I'll ... well, anyway, I'll be buying it. Probably going to wait for a patch or two to play through it though.

I'm just shocked they kept it this quiet and I am very excited to jump on this.

And yes all they had to say was "XCOM 2 expansion" and my wallet would be flying out of my pants (figuratively speaking of course, don't get too excited).

Nice. This might mean they're saving the Terror from the Deep franchise for XCOM 3 (unless they're going for a second expansion for XCOM 2, which I doubt - they only released a single expansion for the even more popular XCOM 1 after all).

I suspect that XCom 3 will be an invasion of the alien homeworld, rather than Terror From the Deep. I think that is the next logical step for the series.

Soldiers can develop bonds with compatible teammates for new abilities and perks. The SITREP system dynamically adds new modifiers to the tactical layer to make sure every mission provides a unique challenge. Advanced campaign options allow for finer adjustments to game length and difficulty.
I both love and hate this idea. I love the idea that soldiers can develop bonds (I imagine from being on missions together) and gain perks/abilities when teamed together. However, this exposed one the things that makes XCOM so hard to deal with. Losing a favorite soldier.

Wow, can't believe no-one has posted in here in a month. There have been a few videos on the new expansion, but this one (3m40s long) does give some gameplay examples... XCOM 2: War of the Chosen – Lost and Abandoned Gameplay Walkthrough.

I'm rather burned out on XCOM2 and the Long War mod for it and was just going to dismiss this expansion as another tweak to the existing gamplay, but it does look different. Sadly it is coming out just days before I'm going on a three weeks and then some trip, so I'll be relying on folks here to give it a thorough looking at.

I finally beat the LW after several false starts and many many hours. Beat the timer by just a few hours. So I was happy to put the game aside for awhile. I'll be happy to pick it up again, too, although probably not right away.

Is there a price on the expansion yet? I am just finishing up a heavily modified game, just to see some of the cool mods that people have made.

The long war mod is just way too out of my league. I love the concept, but I need it to be a little more friendly to my limited playing time. I can play at commander difficulty, but much higher than that and it is just no fun to me for the limited time I have to play it. And the LW mod seems more like max difficulty for me. I might just be that bad at it, but that is my skill level. :)

Yeah, I will buy it as well, since it is Xcom. But is this the same campaign with new troops and such? I know that I read that these new troops will interact on the main map, kind of like the nemesis system from the Middle Earth games(have not played them). But same story?

The video that jz linked a few posts earlier sure looks like a new story that picks up after the vanilla game's ending. For $40 it had better be a new story. I definitely won't pay that much to play the same campaign again.

This is just how I feel. I'm really burned out on the XCOM2 campaign story even with the LW options and the small add-on DLC. I'll be getting this only if it is a completely new campaign, sans Avatar events and the structured end game.

I think there are new story elements on top of the existing campaign. ChristopherOdd has 71 minute video of the first story mission from the DLC. In the video he is taking out a corporal and a sergeant, so I don't think this is post-ending.

That video I watched said that the first mission was two escort missions, one for the sniper dudes, and one for the turncoat dudes. That video implied that you would have to pick a side to save. Or at least it did to me. Honestly, that video really made me lose some interest in this. I mean, zombies? And you have to have a moving gun fight, and utilize the head shot mechanic to ensure you survive? So did it become a FPS or something. I know I am being harsh, but I like to play missions and have variety. I don't want to be fighting tons of 'zombies' all the time.

But maybe that is just one new mission type, so I will see. But it honestly made me lose some interest in it.

At the very end of the video the game moves back to the Geoscape for a couple of minutes and the player highlighted an Advent Blacksite as shown on a pop-up info panel, which looked just like the vanilla XCOM2 Blacksite display. If the new DLC is just adding on missions but I still have to grind through all the same Blacksites I might not be choosing The Chosen
