System Shock 2 is looking great!

Post by Rumpy »

First off, the enhanced version (thanks to The Mix for my copy on Steam!) looks great as is. They've increased the available resolution and everything looks crisp. They've left the textures and models as is, though and some of those can look pretty rough.

So, I followed this modding guide:
http://blog.pcgamingwiki.com/modding-gu ... ding-guide.

Followed all the directions and the game is now looking better than ever. It's actually hard to believe this game is from 1999. Textures and models have all been updated with the mods. And the game just looks and plays great. Even the UI scales well and looks very modern and not at all out of place.

The images no longer load in this thread. Im considering a new run of SS2. Theres a new patch out as of Sept for the Steam version. Is there a new graphics package or something I should know of? Anything that improves it would be welcome.

EDIT: Also can you run it in widescreen like 2560x1080 21:9?

Should I install the Steam version or the GoG version? I'm leaning to GoG as they usually make sure stuff works.

Not sure what you are talking about, I've never had a problem with a game on Steam not working because it is on Steam.

I've encountered a couple of older games where the GoG version was playable when the Steam version was not. In some cases it is because of the extra work that GoG does to make games compatible with older OSes. Jade Empire comes to mind. I am able to play the GoG version just fine, but can't get past the menu in the Steam version, and a lot of other people have exactly the same issue and solution.

Yeah, images not loading anymore due to not having an account there anymore, plus the other changes Photobucket had made notwithstanding.

From what I remember, I think it supports all modern resolutions, but it took a bit to get it all working. As for graphical improvements, I'm not sure if it changed, but I had to pick and choose out of a number of different things I wanted to update, ie it wasn't all part of a single graphical package. That sure would be nice. But yeah, the high-poly models and the upgraded textures were separate.

Ive installed the GoG version. Halfway through training I realize Im going to need to find a item degradation patch to keep stuff from wearing out. I HATE that in games.

Not sure Ill stick with it as Im in a HUGE gaming slump and installing everything I can to see what sticks. But if I do it will be my third time through. looking forward to seeing the robot doing the macarena in the training area. Ya this game is that old...1999.

Yes, the item degradation is a ball breaker and ridiculous in SS2. I think I found a mod to turn it off somewhere. SS2 is also (IMO) ridiculously hard. Even on Easy when I got to the penultimate level, I just couldn't get through it without god mode. It's an awesome game, but I don't think I could ever get through it without mods. It's amazing what an "Easy" difficulty means now compared to then.

There was an official version 2.23 patch that gave you control over the weapon degradation. Listed here where it mentions:
Gun degradation
The config variable:

Code:
gun_degrade_rate <n>

is a multiplier for the rate at which your weapons degrade. For example, to completely eliminate weapon degradation & breakage, set the value to 0. To tone it down, set it somewhere between 1 and 0.
You have to manually create the configuration file to include the codes you want to use.

Name the file user.cfg and it goes in the main dir of the game install......its not created by the game itself any longer.

Im bAAaaack. I have a great Navy character now and the game is modded beautifully. For those wanting the best modded SS2 I suggest what was suggested to me and what Im using..the SS2tool. https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=4447.0 . Just follow that pages guide and you're good. I can even read text now.

Ill spoil 2 little easter eggs for you here....one matters later and one doesn't.

1. At the VERY start when you exit the tram and go up the first grav lift.....turn right and climb up the last pillar there and take the basketball. Trust me. Keep it until later in the game for something you'll know when you see it ....or look it up online. It takes up a inv space but worth it.

2. After your 2nd training and you spawn back about the training station turn left and look at the robot behind the blue window. :)

Ok now I have a question. Im stuck until I find the answer so figured Id ask here. Im NAVY and am at that first 4 terminal spot that allows me to either raise some of my characters stats or skills. I have all the nanites I could find getting here so should I up some stats like agil or str or something or should I buy them all into skills of some type? Whatever the answer plz toss some ideas of which ones to get. Thanks folks.

Been WAY too long to toss anything out except for these bookmarked long ago, something there should (hopefully) help.

Thanks Monkey. That 2nd link is the one I used when i made my guy. Was handy. But that 1st one lists all the stuff and what it does. Extremely handy. Still not sure on the first things to take at that first booster shop but I took 1 point in energy weps because it was 0 and you need a basic 1 to use the energy pistol which you do find early.

Then of course I tried to do something else I needed and it was 0 too whatever the skill was I needed hahaha. Never enough upgrade points in these games.

I found this guy early on the ship. He couldn't take it any longer and had hung himself. But that expression is priceless ...and creepy.

That's one of the problems with fan HD updates. Don't get me wrong, I use them myself, but sometimes they're a little free with reinterpreting what the developers put in. In this case, they made it comical. They also added the gore, which I think takes away from the creepiness. He's injured, and he decides to go out on his own terms. In the original, the guy was pristine. He wasn't hurt. He was just terrified.
