I'll be around tonight. If you end up playing vermintide give me a shout.

I can start pretty much anytime tonight.

Shall we figure on 7pm CST or earlier/later?

So 8 EST. That should be doable. I just need to get Steam coms working. I've been doing a bit of reading on tips, and have found a few things. The brief, repeated tips I've seen (stolen shamelessly from all over):
~Stick together
~Don't attack the Stormvermin patrols (armored Skaven)
~Don't take the grimoire if your party is not able to handle the debuff (you get better items at the ends, but each one carried drops everyone's health.) Make sure everyone agrees before getting one.
~Watch your back, swarms from behind is the cause of most deaths. You can't use chokepoints as well as in L4D (although they still help.)
~Never leave tomes behind if you can avoid it.
~Listen to the characters when facing a Ratling Gunner; the Gunner's target will give a voice callout to notify the players who the Gunner's aiming for. If you're the target, get to cover or raise your shield (if you have one). If you do have a shield, try to get some other enemies between you and the Gunner - let him turn those rats into swiss cheese for you. If you're not the target, locate and deal with the Gunner ASAP if the team simply can't flee from it. He's armored so use armor-piercing weapons or aim for the head.
~Potions are mainly for dealing with the Rat Ogre.
~Use charged attacks or (preferably and) headshots on armored enemies.
~You can headshot with melee, and it is important to do so.
~Use your highlight key to mark special enemies
~if you're missing 50% of your health or less, use a Healing Draught, not a Medical Supply. If you're missing more than 75% of your health, use a Medical Supply (how much they heal is based on how hurt you are.)
I also recommend reading this for the basics, and this is a more in-depth collection of tips.

Use your shield when fighting a rat ogre. Per the loading screen tips, your shield will protect you from damage.

Phew. Well that was fun on a bun.

Tentatively scheduled for next Sunday night again.

Sounds like maybe we'll need a new fourth for that session.

Yeah, next Sunday I'll have the kids, and the chances are that we'll be playing something together. If not, I'll join if nobody jumps in.

The wizard has infinite ammo, but it has an 'overheat' mechanic. See the curved bar in the middle of the screen? Any time I cast, that fills up. It drains very slowly over time. If I fill the bar completely, I explode, killing me and anything (including other player) near me. I can vent the excess magic at any time by holding down R, but it slows me down while I hold it. Note that there are two black marks near the bottom of the arc. If it is above that and I vent, it also damages me. I did it sometimes in a pinch, but I normally have to stop casting and let it decrease on its own rather than eat the damage.

Rat ogres were by far the worst. Though that was a dicey bit there. Nice screenshots.

That was a blast. And completely chaotic. :D

Just to clarify what things were, the Skaven in Warhammer are rats twisted by Chaos. They worship The Horned Rat (we saw his symbol a few times - an inverted triangle.) The collect a glowing stone infected with chaos energy called "Warpstone" that they use for various A Wizard Did It purposes.

Most of the trash we fought were a mix of Packrats and Skavenslaves.

Image

The tough armored ones were the Stormvermin:

Image

The gas guys were Poison Wind Globadiers, who use warpstone gas in glass balls as grenades:

Image

Ratling Gunners:

Rat Ogres

The assassins were Clan Eshin Gutter Runners:

And the assholes with the sticks were Packmasters:

I played Warhammer for years. I collected full or partial armies for the High Elves, Orcs & Goblins, Lizardmen, and Brettonia. I liked the Skaven, and I have about ten Skaven miniatures, but I never got started on them, as they were the largest and most expensive army to collect, by far. Mostly because of the hordes of Skavenslaves, Clanrats, and regular giant rats they used as cannon fodder.

I took some video as well. I'll upload that tomorrow when it isn't Too Damned Late (alternately, I'll forget and do it in the near future.)

As an aside, I don't play Warhammer anymore due to GW's business practices, which are unfriendly as all hell.

Was that the library you were running around in? We spent sooooo much time trying to find our way through - eventually realized that you have to jump down into an area that looks like it's outside.

That was the library in the Wizards Tower, yeah.

In the Packmasters shot, that's Blackhawk in the foreground and me in the background. Everybody but me either fell or jumped down off the high point in that area to fight a Rat Ogre. I stayed up high to keep up fire with my blunderbuss.

We managed to take the Ogre down but when I went to make my way back to where the rest of the party would be working their way back up I ran straight into the Packmaster who quickly strung me up. Blackhawk was closest and was making his way to my rescue but the Packmaster had already completed hanging my dumb ass out to dry so the Packmaster was able to snag him and string him up as well.

Fortunately, GreenGoo and TheMix were able to rescue the both of us before we completely expired.

Almost. They cut us down, but didn't realize it left us in 'dying' mode. They got me down first, and I was lying there bleeding out watching them both run off to your end. "Uh... guys?"

Yeah, that's true, but I'm pretty sure I got back to you in time. Not sure what happened to Brian, except he was stuck in the "I'm dying" position and sliding around the floor (graphical glitch) for awhile.

More context for the double hanging pic (which is a great pic btw).

So Brian gets himself hanged. Then Blackhawk goes to rescue him by himself. Boom, hanged. The Mix and I are panicked and start searching for a way to reach them (the wizard tower is a bit mazey in places). I start to head towards Blackhawk and Brian and realize I'm about to repeat Blackhawk's mistake and get myself hanged right along side of them, so I stop and run back towards TheMix. TheMix is like "wtf dude, keep going" and in my head I'm like "after you, my good chum" because I'm none too eager to be strung up and running in alone is a sure way to find myself planted beside them.

GG left out that right as we were trying to make our way back, we got jumped by a horde. So we are trying to fight our way through the horde in time to still save them without getting taken out by not dealing with the horde.

That is true. We were swarmed as Brian was hoisted and we could see his red profile through the walls, followed shortly thereafter by Blackhawk's profile glaring red at us.

It was...challenging.

The one thing I'll say about Vermintide was that I found the VOIP to be kind of lacking. There was no indication of who was talking, and it was't working for me at all any time I was in any sort of menu or loading screen.

I was easily more than twice that! Combination of not understanding how the game was going to throw enemies at me, rushing, and getting used to the control scheme. Take your pick! Much easier after I hooked up with y'all.

At one point I wasn't even sure anyone could hear me any longer.

That said, I didn't have any issues with it. Everyone came through pretty clearly and the 3 of you have distinctive voices from each other so I was able to figure out who was speaking fairly early, which was a surprise.

Using the Steam Voip is almost as bad because you still don't have a visual cue as to who is talking in game, although it would definitely remove the issue of losing communication while in menus and such.

My lack of interest in Vermintide before we played has given way to a keen interest and excitement anticipating our next play session. I've read up on the loot system a bit more and while I doubt it will make TheMix happy (the system is pretty stingy and grindy) I find the addition of a loot system to the L4D formula, even a stingy one, to be a good thing.

I tried it once before on a free-to-play weekend and didn't like it much, but I had so much fun the other night that I am really looking forward to playing again, and hate that I may not be able to make the next one (I'll still wait and see, depending on how things go and on whether there is a slot free.)

I'm pondering investing in a small Teamspeak server. It would only be a couple of bucks a month for a 10 or 15 person, works in any game, and there are utilities (like Overwolf) that will display the speaker's name onscreen when they're talking.

I assume there are a number of options, including some run by OO'ers who have kindly allowed others to access them in the past.

Honestly though, it has been my experience that Steam does a good enough job that spending money to get the same functionality that steam provides for free seems like a waste.
