Re: Cold Waters
I loved the original Red Storm Rising game. The campaign especially was way ahead of it's time in terms of creating a dynamic campaign where your actions had a visible impact on the war.
I'll also probably wait for a sale, but if the campaign is even a shadow of the old one it will be well worth it.

Re: Cold Waters
Well if you want to see a little gameplay Onkel Neal has posted this on subsim.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WqLYXq ... e=youtu.be
Be forewarned and hopefully being a friend he won't get mad at me for saying this, he has no idea what he is doing and does some really unwise stuff.
No offense Neal.
Tokek apparently has it, maybe he will let us know what he thinks after playing some?

Yeah, I still have that in one of my boxes somewhere... I had it in floppies. I quite enjoy playing with my torpedoes chasing down that last enemy sub, snake, circle, etc. I think I remember that right... I was pretty proficient in most sub sims, at least modern. Not that good in WW2 stuff. I hope this one hit a sale soon... I want to try it.

Re: Cold Waters
I picked this up on a whim and am quite enjoying it. It's first modern sub game that I've played since 688 Attack Sub, which I barely remember. So far, the highlight has been inserting a SEAL team to wreak havoc in Arkhangelsk. Lots of quiet maneuvering and nary a shot fired.
To get a handle on the gameplay, I've been watching videos by Jive Turkey, who is apparently a former submariner. Whether or not that's true, he is definitely about 1,000 times better at Cold Waters than I am.
Caveat: I've experienced a couple of crashes so far, which can be very frustrating when you're in the middle of a tense encounter. Maybe wait until that's fixed.

After listening to a few of his videos I have no doubt he is. He uses jargon that is very unlikely to be known by someone who hasn't been through the drill.AWS260 wrote:I picked this up on a whim and am quite enjoying it. He definitely talks as if he spent some time onboard a nuke while streaming. I can probably do that if I get back into the mood playing Dangerous Waters / Jane's 688. I used to be really into that stuff and got most of the submarine novels.

Picked this up the other night and it's great so far. Still a few bugs here and there like occasionally being able to see enemies you don't have a solid ID on yet, and missing a couple features that were in Red Storm Rising like the Seawolf submarine and Sealance missiles, but on the whole it's a gorgeous update to Red Storm Rising.

Bought it with a Christmas steam gift card. Hate it wasn't on sale but just playing the tutorial this is already bringing back old memories of Red Storm Rising. i am going to really like this game and well worth full price.

I really want to get this, but the lack of sale makes it harder to jump. How "grognard" is the game? I am not looking for arcade action, but I also can't learn the exact firing solution for a 1965 Type 53-65 torpedo to be able to play.

Re: Cold Waters
Not much grognard to it. Computer does all the calculations for you since it is modern warfare. Need some understanding of sub warfare (which weapon to choose, temp layers in ocean, when to drop decoys, etc) but there are no calculations that need to be made.baelthazar wrote: ↑Sun Dec 31, 2017 7:00 pm I really want to get this, but the lack of sale makes it harder to jump. Re: Cold Waters
the 1968 scenario is very hard. The Russian ships have a harder time detecting my sub but the unguided torpedoes are useless and the wired ones are slower than the surface ships (except Merchants). You have to have one torp chasing a ship and then launch another to intersect the ship running away. Really hard to do unless it is running a circle while avoiding the torpedo.

Quick question... the Steam store page says it has a level editor but I don't see any Steam Workshop mentioned. What does the level editor provide?

Level/mission design is all done via text file. It's detailed in the modding guide that the devs posted on Steam.

Re: Cold Waters
I'm watching a pretty good "Let's Play" video here, which is showing a first encounter in the campaign. One thing that is surprising is the number of keyboard clicks I am hearing. Is this guy just hitting the keys more times than necessary, like when you are urgently calling an elevator, or do commands like ordering a turn require multiple presses of the same key, which is what it sounds like to me?

Hmm interesting. I haven't played a good sub sim in a while and I really need to branch out my gaming to not just be PUBG. I'll have to check out the videos when I get home. I've never heard of this.

Re: Cold Waters
he may be turning, each key press is 5 degrees on the rudder. So if you are avoiding a torpedo then he may be going from 30 to -30 on the rudder.jztemple2 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 09, 2018 3:36 pm I'm watching a pretty good "Let's Play" video here, which is showing a first encounter in the campaign. Plane & Ballast is key strokes. Changing camera views, reload torpedoes, dropping decoys etc. There is a cheat sheet I printed out listing them all and you can remap, which I did on some. The great thing is the tutorial takes into account your remapping and displays the proper new keys to use.

I have read on another forum that Cold Waters has no in-mission saves. Does anyone know whether that is true or not?

Re: Cold Waters
it autosaves before an encounter happens and you can save on the strategic map but once the encounter or mission starts you cannot save. I had to end a mission early once so I just loaded the autosave and started back on the strategic map and reentered the mission.

Reckoned I did "okay", hunting a red boomer protected by multiple escorts with just a Sturgeon class. I'd imagine doing a little better with a 688.

Re: Cold Waters
Okay, just did another single mission... A bunch of Chinese SSGNs has wiped out US bases in Asia with cruise missile strikes and US command believe Guam is next. Your 688(i) waiting near Guam, hoping to catch the Chinese subs... The order was to wipe them out, without any collateral damage to neutral merchants.
Mission successful. All enemy subs wiped out, did not take a single hit, no merchant damaged. I'm uploading the video now, should have it done in an hour. EDIT: I had to trim out an unsuccessful mission and my desktop. Should be ready in 1 hour or less. TL;DR version below the 22 minute long video. It's how long the battle lasted
Immediately went to ultraquiet. Sensors immediately picked up 5 out of 6 subs, plus 3 merchants (a lot of doing signature ID). By +04:30 I have 5 subs ID'ed, and I'm about to start launching. Fired all four tubes after setting torps to circle so it won't go after merchants. Then went all ahead flank and drove to 900 ft. Got at least three torpedoes incoming, but got two kills by +7:30. Reloaded 4 tubes with 3 ADCAPs and 1 MOSS decoy. Shot the decoy due east (090), then 3 more torpedoes against the three remaining targets. THEN found third torpedo to the east caught another sub, so that's THREE kills by +09:00. Fourth torpedo actually came BACK and I had to evade that. Of the three torpedoes, one wire broke. Managed to guide the remaining two past a couple decoys and got two more kills by +15:00. That leaves one way north which I killed by +21:00.

Managed to survive the sink the Kirov mission... Though I... well, technically didn't. I sat on seafloor while the last ship sunk. I guess I should have tried emergency blow to get to the surface, but I did take down all the ships and the sub. Video coming in later.

Re: Cold Waters
Started a campaign, the Y2K USN vs PLAN scenario. My main problem with the campaign is you can't choose to disengage from encounters. You're a sub, you should be able to choose to engage or not. But no, not in CW where EVERY blink (even ones that don't show up on screen yet) is an encounter, and each one requires you to expend torpedoes. And the text briefing doesn't have a map that tells you where to look for your primary target. You have to find the name, then look on the map, which can be ANYWHERE. I know Cam Ran Bay is in Vietnam, which is well to the south. But where the heck is Quingdao? Turns out it's to the north, WAY north. And there is no such place as Quingdao... It's actually Qingdao, as in Tsingtao beer. ARGH!
Oh, what's worse, the "transit" to your ops area is a PITA. You have to HOLD THE MOUSE DOWN, left and right click moves at different speeds (where was this explained? I'll check the manual) and I don't see a pause button. So I can't choose NOT to engage, avoid the random missions and go after the big one. ARGH!
Actually did finish this one campaign. Set it to easy, killed a bunch of targets in the Seawolf, then lost the ship as I got two compartments flooded, emergency blow didn't work, and was sitting in 270 ft of water. Was rescued and got a 688. Took out a battle group that came out of "Quingdao". But got hit in the propulsion. Unable to disengage, and lost with all hands.
