SCI-FI, or at least not classical fantasy, RPGs
Wondering what you all have played that is not fantasy per se for RPGs and also what party based non-fantasy games you have played and liked?
Not sure where the later Wizardry games fall as a category but I lean more towards classic fantasy

I've been playing Starcrawlers off and on, and it's a pretty fun, classic, turn based Sci Fi RPG.Jaddison wrote:Wondering what you all have played that is not fantasy per se for RPGs and also what party based non-fantasy games you have played and liked?

Crawlers Wanted: high pay, certain risk. Plausible deniability a must.
Build a crew of renegade adventurers on the fringes of space, taking jobs from megacorps to hunt bounties, sabotage rivals and conduct corporate espionage. If you can navigate the intricate politics of wealth and power, you might just survive long enough to spend your hard-won credits.
You’re a Crawler, and that means you work for those that can pay. Asset recovery, commercial espionage, and mayhem for hire are just a few of your crew’s specialized services. If something shady needs doing, chances are a Crawler will be involved. Succeed and you’ll be rewarded with better pay then any corp drone can dream of. Plus, you'll earn the respect of the eclectic assortment of merchants, opportunists and adventurers who make their home in the fringes of space.
Key Features:
-Wage strategic battles against futuristic enemies with an innovative time unit turn-based combat system.
-Procedurally-generated dungeons and events create endless replayability.
-Choose your allies and your foes wisely. Your choices will change how the story unfolds.
-Eight player classes each with unique abilities, both in combat and when exploring.
-Randomly generated weapons, armor and gear with upgradeable enhancements.
-Easy to Hardcore difficulty modes and optional permadeath.

Always wished for the old Buck Rogers games to get remade or for that matter all the Gold box games.

The Planescape Numenera game isn't classical anything Though it's more of a story game than a game with combat

Still playable on DoxBox. I revisited the first one just last year and, interface issues aside, it holds up well.Jaddison wrote:I will check those out. Thanks.

Limiting it to newer titles:
Wasteland 2
Shadowrun: Dragonfall and Hong Kong
Numenera
Fallout New Vegas
Underrail
Not quite RPGs
The Mass Effect games
Fantasy but not classical fantasy…
Tyranny (Fantasy where the bad guy already won, has a quasi-apocalyptic vibe, you are on the bad guys side…sort of)

Jagged Alliance 2 with the v1.13 update could be described as a non-fantasy, party-based TBS RPG-crossover, and still holds up superbly (with a variety of other fan-made mods that also further expand the game). While it's obviously not a pure RPG, it does incorporate RPG elements in an immensely enjoyable, immersive way.Jaddison wrote:Wondering what you all have played that is not fantasy per se for RPGs and also what party based non-fantasy games you have played and liked?

Re: SCI-FI, or at least not classical fantasy, RPGs
I see a thread title like sci-fi rpg and I get all excited, and then I see the games listed in the thread and then I'm like "meh".
It's not that the games listed are bad games, as they clearly aren't. They just don't seem to meet my expectations. As I've never itemized those expectations, I don't know what they are, which is problematic.

Enjoying Stellar Tactics. Still buggy, it is a pre-alpha built by one guy, but worth it. Reminds me of an old game called Planet's Edge in many ways.ColdSteel wrote:Stellar Tactics.

I think I mentioned Planets Edge in the ST thread...or maybe it was MegaTraveler. But both fit. I FINALLY got a mint box of Planet's Edge just a few years back. I still remember sitting at the mall and reading a 6 page preview of Planet's Edge in a pc gaming mag. I was so excited.Hyena wrote:Enjoying Stellar Tactics. Wouldn't the BioShock games fit into this category?
