XCOM 2: War of the Chosen - Now talking about the new WOTC Long War Mod

Post by jztemple2 »

Since XCOM 2: War of the Chosen (or X2WOTC) looks like a pretty big refresh of the XCOM 2 gameplay, I've decided to start a new thread based upon a discussion in the previous XCOM 2 thread.

The release is ten days or so away, so it's time to start talking who's going to step up and do the Day One purchases and post those important initial impressions. For those who might care, Green Man Gaming is offering the expansion at 25% off, listed as "Pre-purchase".

Although I'm going to be gone most of September, I might still get the expansion and get it installed to avoid the wait when I come home. Yeah, that's what I'm telling myself

I had previously uninstalled the game and unsubscribed all the mods. I reinstalled but will keep it a clean, non-modded version for my first playing of X2WOTC.

As Ben Bailey says at the beginning of each episode of Ca$h Cab, "So what do you say, you in?"

So if you were bad and stopped playing XCOM 2 like ten hours in, even though the XCOM reboot and its style of gameplay are among your favourite ever, would you play XCOM 2 through now, pre-expansion? Or wait and do it after?

This has become especially relevant due to my new gaming PC. Mediocre performance was another reason I put vanilla on the shelf.

I saw a commercial on late night TV. It said, "Forget everything you know about slipcovers." So I did. And it was a load off my mind. Then the commercial tried to sell me slipcovers, and I didn't know what the hell they were. -- Mitch Hedberg

Well, imo there is no question that the vanilla Xcom 2 is a great, great game and well worth playing in it's current form. It depends whether you're willing to play through it now and then a second time with the expansion. If you can only see yourself playing it once (shame on you) then wait.

Yeah, there is enough here that I will purchase it. But I might wait for a sale. It's a lot of content, but it is the same story, and even with the new tactics, I am not sure I want to beat the story again...

But new and shiny...

Who am I kidding, I will buy it on release day... Sigh..

Loved the XCom games, and certainly have pre-ordered just to get the discount, since I am not expecting that low of a price for many months after release. However, Steel Faith Overhaul is just about ready to get their glorious TW Warhammer mod updated for the recent expansion, so that is going to occupy my game time. Then Battlestar Galactica something-something is due out at the end of the month, and then TW Warhammer 2 is also on the near horizon (with eventual SFO goodness, of course). WotC, since it is just a layer added on to a great game that I already played to death, is pretty much going to have to give hand-jobs to usurp all those other titles, and I'm gathering they chose to expend their resources on letting you pose your troops for selfies instead.
Sims 3 and signature unclear.

So... this isn't additional content, adding things post-campaign to extend it? Since it said "refresh" in the first post, this actually changes what XCOM 2 is all about, it would seem I have a hard enough time playing through a complete game once, let alone twice, so it seems the decision here is to go back and just play through the original version, wait for this and play through that instead or... both? :|

I used "refresh" in the sense that the changes added by the expansion, it seems to me, would make a replay of the campaign more fun than just going through the same types of missions and opponents. Between having the three new factions to play and the Chosen to fight against, the player should be seeing lots of new stuff, like new combat environments. And in addition there are new game mechanics, like soldier bonding and ability points.

I don't see X2WOTC changing what XCOM 2 is all about, which is the campaign to defeat the ADVENT forces, avoid Dark Events and eventually run through that final sequence of missions. If I am wrong someone please correct me; this is just my impression.

That's me, probably. Between the base game and Long War I've beaten the boss level at least four times now, and I really don't relish playing it again. But because the process of getting there is so enjoyable, I'll grab this mod when the price falls into the $10 range.

If they had just included an alternate boss level (not even a whole new story) it would have been a Day One purchase.

I'm your huckleberry.

I'll definitely get it on Tuesday, will try to play it at some point during the day and night. Not sure when I'll post some impressions. But I will eventually. I really dont mind if there's no added story with it. I just love the gameplay overall. The additions sound like interesting tweaks. Hmm I guess i should scrub my xcom of mods then.

I deleted all my mods so I can get a fresh look at the game. I am glad that there is an option to double the length of the mission timers, that was one of my real issues with the game. I also liked the mod that increased squad size, but I guess I'll try it without at first.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply any kind of fundamental changes to make it a different game, more like you go from having one faction to now there are four to unite and the "Chosen" were added to the fight with some new mechanics sprinkled in. Any idea if you have the option in-game to play the base game or the Chosen version, or does the latter replace the former? Worst case I'll just wait for Newcastle to take point and report back.

I guess you could always deselect the X2WOTC DLC install option to back it out of the XCOM 2 installation, but I'm betting that Firaxis is going to make it just a selection from the main menu. I'm also wondering if the non-WOTC specific changes, like soldier bonding, will be added to the base game even if you don't want to play the WOTC option.

And I'm weak... I'll only have two days to play WOTC before l leave on my trip, but I pre-ordered it anyway. So look for a few impressions from me 8-)

I think if haven't played XCOM2 already you might find all the options added with War of the Chosen completely overwhelming. That is just my guess though. There is a LOT more going on with the expansion.

The changes with the expansion are pretty expansive and there is a lot more going on, both tactically and strategically. The new Factions give you new soldier classes, but they also give you covert ops missions which give you more things for your soldiers to do. Oh, but your soldiers get tired now so be careful just how much you send your soldiers to do. In XCOM2 you could beat the game without ever using more than 6 soldiers. That is not going to happen in the expansion. Also, the Chosen are popping in on your missions making life difficult, Similar to the alien rulers, but more often and less powerful. They can attack the avenger and injure your engineers and scientists and steal your supplies. You need to hunt them down or they will ruin your campaign.

There are also new continent bonuses, new mission objectives, new mission mechanics, new skills, skill points will let you get abilities you skipped. Why choose between combat protocol and aid protocol, get both. Soldiers have a combat intelligence stat that impacts how many skill points they get. Smarter soldiers will get more skills.

I'm going to stop now. Can you tell I am excited for the expansion? My last campaign was Campaign 8, though I think one of those was an early loss on legend, so I have completed the game 7 times, one of them with the long war 2 mod. No game even comes close for me.

DAMN! i didn't know it was that deep the expansion. REALLY looking forward to it. Those are some sweet ass additions/improvements.

@ Sudy
I would jump in now with Xcom 2 vanilla. That way you get a real good feel for the game. And heck even beat it. That way you'll have gotten your feet wet, have a good sense of it. Then you can turn around and pick up the xpac and do another play through.

Heh, well, I mean, I like pressing the "quick load" button repeatedly too, but maybe I'll opt for 6-man squads instead.

It's only that bad in the beginning. Late-game, your overpowered teams do tend to roll over the opposition, and having 4 people just makes it harder but not "constantly loading" harder. If I recall correctly, I went into the last mission with 3 Psi Ops people and maybe a Specialist. The Dominate skill and other Psi abilities are power multipliers, adding to your team without base upgrades.

Yeah, I'm not saying it can't be done, I just wouldn't want to ironman it. (of course, I wouldn't want to ironman XCom anyway, given how often I make simple and stupid UI-related mistakes)

So, I guess I'm slow, but it looks like they modified the opening Gatecrasher mission. If you already knew this, then just move along :)

New Gatecrasher

EDIT: It's been so long, I don't know if it's actually new, but the title seems to indicate it.

There isn't a change to the basic story of the game, which might be what those folks are referring to. The story is the same, it's just everything else that has changed.

It has been referred to as XCOM 2.5 and I think that is a legit description.

I agree. The chosen add a ton of possibilities, and with the new way to do missions, I think that 2.5 is a good description.

Hopefully no more DLC that is just new customization. I do think the posters and pictures thing is silly, but I am sure that some will love that feature. Everything else I have seen is very cool.

Now that I`ve had a chance to play with the propaganda tool, I`m far less impressed. How it was described versus what it does is wildly out of sync. For example, I read that you could pose your soldiers. Changing how they line up is not what I think of when I think of creating poses.

Oh well. It was a good idea that fell far short of its possibilities.

I`m going through a bit of a gaming funk now, having finished my time with a couple of extremely great games, and if I`m still there when this gets released, I may pay full price. Xcom 2 is a great game and these changes seem to add all sorts of interesting new mechanics both in battle in the metagame.

Line up is not the only option. From the edit soldiers menu, you can choose each soldiers pose from a list of like 20 each with some class specific variants and you can also rotate them to face the direction of your choice.

I quit watching the videos part way through the second one, I didn't want to spoil the surprise. Good to know that there is a definite new feel to the missions.

By the way, decided for yuks to start up an XOM 2 campaign on Normal, just to get my feet wet again. Lost all four of my troopers on the second mission (the first non-tutorial one)

On Normal? Umm... you need to spend your vacation thinking about what you have done... and by that I mean failing to properly use cover, allowing yourself to be flanked and grouping your soldiers leaving them susceptible to explosives.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun just posted their impressions in Wot I Think – XCOM 2: War Of The Chosen. It's a long article that starts with...
I can’t help but think of a sausage. A huge, fat, glistening sausage, bulging with meat (or the nearest vegetarian equivalent) to the point that the innards have burst through the skin, forming deliciously fatty globules on the surface. There is surely no room for more, but nonetheless even more has been stuffed inside it. It clearly shouldn’t work. It’s almost obscene. It looks like it will fall apart or even explode if even the slightest pressure is applied. It is sausage-based madness. The sausage is XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, and it is as delectable and satisfying as it absolutely bloody insane.
And ends with...
I said right back at the start that ‘DLC’ desperately undersells War Of The Chosen, this fat and bursting sausage of turn-based splendour. I think I might have found ‘XCOM 3’ a mite more appropriate.

I am not loving the sausage metaphor, but I am dying for this game. Just a few more days. I didn't read the whole article because I already know everything I need to know and I agree with the spinning plates comparison he makes a little further in.

There is just so much more going on. The biggest thing is the way it addresses the fact that before you really only needed 6 soldiers.

Yeah, I'd like to say that I'll have the patience to wait for a patch or at least a hotfix to address any really glaring issues, but that's probably not true.

Re: XCOM 2: War of the Chosen - A new war? A new thread!

I've watched COdd play around 20 missions and all the strategic layer stuff on top of that and the only thing I have noticed is a slowdown if he puts everyone on overwatch too fast (overwatch - next soldier - overwatch - next soldier - overwatch - next soldier). The game seems to be pretty well baked. I haven't seen everything like chosen takedown missions and some of the later facilities. The RPS article mentions new stuff in the proving ground. I haven't seen any of that yet.

I'm sure there will be something, but my love for this game will likely blind me to it. My last playthrough was with Long War 2. It will be interesting to go back to the short war. :D

Sheesh, this is one small box. Thankfully, everything's packed in nicely this time. Not too tight nor too loose (someone's sig in 3, 2, ...). - Hepcat
