Original Fallout free on Steam till end of September

Post by jztemple2 »

Yup, if you are the one person who never got the original Fallout, or just want it on Steam, it is free for the next day. Download and install and it's yours to keep.

Cool, thanks for the heads up. One can never have too many copies of Fallout. :)

I bought it for a few bucks at some point. Fired it up several months ago, but I just couldn't get into it -- graphics and interface are too primitive to enjoy.

The Fallout Fixt "megamod" helps a little (since it does include a Hi-Res Patch, among many others).

I found it mentioned on Blues News, I check the site a couple of times a day for the latest news.

The Steam version has the hi-res patch included. You may need to go into the install directory and run the hi-res config tool (f1_res_config.exe) manually, though. When I launched the game with the default settings, I got a blank black screen. I had to run the config tool and either set it to windowed mode, or change the graphics mode from DX9 to "basic" in order to run it in full-screen mode.

It ran in an itty bitty window for me; I had to lean forward and squint, and it was still hard to maneuver. Maybe I'll take another look and see if that patch was enabled.

Wow Blues....I had no idea they were still around. Always loved them and VoodooExtreme3d back in the day. There was another site too which I cant recall.

Ah i see Steam is giving away Allegiance too now. I beta'd that around 2000. Was ok for a mp space game.

It's not enabled by default... I'm having the same black screen problem and no amount of config changes are working for me. Yet. :x

Bummer, at this moment only the 'classic' version works.

It took me a couple of passes at the config tool before I noticed that I actually had to enable the patch, as well as set options, before anything worked.

Here are the settings that are working for me:

I replayed Fallout about 2 years ago, with the hi res patch among others, and it worked great. I am one who rarely if ever goes back to old games, partly because I can't handle some of that old school UI design, but in many cases the graphics are just so bad. Was not the case here. It was just as I remembered it, and amazing. Wish I could say the same for X-Com. :(

I replayed Fallout 1 with no mods a couple months ago. It is "old fashioned" but having played it before it was easy to get into. Really a great game.

Dont forget that once you get the water chip and remove that timer there is still another game wide timer that if you take too long you will fail the game. Im not sure how long that timer is and I never knew about it back in the day and never ran out of time.

In v1.0, the overall limit was 500 game-days. That was patched to 13 game-years.

I'm making money easily this time thru .. sure, I pickpocket a bit, but mostly it's from selling desert eagles and green-leather armors. I'm waiting for the inevitable amber alert, since I kept Tandi as a free companion .. but we're in love .. she's with me willingly.
