Fallout 2 > Fallout

Fallout 4 = Fallout 3 > New Vegas

Fallout Tactics

Note that they are intentionally in three separate lines. Also, I never played any of the console BoS games.

I hate to rank them, because I enjoyed most of them pretty thoroughly.

That being said:

Classics: Fallout 2 > Fallout 1 (just barely) > Fallout Tactics
Modern: Fallout 3 = New Vegas = Fallout 4
Crap: Fallout Shelter, "Brotherhood of Steel" (the one on the original XBox)

A "non-judgemental ranking" is an oxymoron. :) #AllFalloutsMatter

Fallout 2 is probably my favourite, but I've yet to meet a Fallout that I didn't like.

I forgot to list Shelter. I'd have put it in its own line, too, and I had a fair amount of fun with it for the price I paid (which was zero.) I don't like comparing apples to oranges, so I don't compare Fallout Tactics to Fallout 4, or New Vegas to Fallout 2. They're completely different beasts.

I loved Fallout 1 and 2, but played them years after their release, so it missed that nostalgia factor for me. Still, hold up really well, and very few "older" games I'll play to completion; so it's a hat off to their writing. That said, I've explained my bias for the list below.

Fallout 3
Fallout 4
Fallout 2
Fallout
Fallout: NV

Fallout 3, for it's time, was pretty awesome -- didn't think Bethesda could pull it off, but it was fun. Fallout 4 was the better game, but a lot less impressive for it's time I think. NV wasn't a bad game, it just felt too long-winded for me. Might have just rushed it too much while playing it, but a lot of it seemed pretty forgettable. I honestly want to go back and play it, but every time I do, I feel like I'd rather be playing any of the other Fallout games more.

Fallout 3 - I don't think it has aged well but great when it came out
Fallout 4
Fallout NV - The mechanics are better then Fallout 3 but it always felt linear in a way that 3 and 4 didn't.

Fallout 1 = Fallout 2 - I can't rate them against the new versions because it's been so long.

If you play for a good story, NV is better. If you play to explore the world and discover, Fallout 3 is better.

I enjoy the exploration more than the story. I have hundreds of hours each in Oblivion, Morrowind, Skyrim, and the Fallouts, and I've only finished the main storyline once in most of them.

I didn't want to chime in (I don't trust the non-judgemental ranking claims!), but I absolutely love exploration (it's my primary reason for playing computer games) and would rate Fallout New Vegas higher than Fallout 3. I think mine looks like this:

Fallout New Vegas = Fallout 4
Fallout 3
Fallout 2
Fallout

I rate Fallout 4 about the same (maybe slightly lower) than New Vegas only because I loved exploring it and it looked beautiful - so much to see. However, in terms of story, I still haven't finished Fallout 4 because the plot suuuuucked. I loved roaming around New Vegas, though I'll fully admit it was MotS in terms of environmental stuff. If someone could make a New Vegas story in a Fallout 4 engine, I'd probably die a happy man.
Maybe next year, maybe no go

I fully fall into the good story camp. Fallout 4 was a fairly big disappointment for me because the story is so craptacular. So, yeah, I agree with your analysis. I can see that there were more cool exploring things in F3.

In Fallout 3 all I really remember is Megaton and the DC full of super mutants and a HORRIBLE metro system that I got SO sick of. Yet I can tell you Fallout 1 and 2 from start to finish.

Fallout
Fallout New Vegas
the rest

The problem for me is the others didn't offer enough in the way of a new experience or didn't top the experience of the one I liked. New Vegas for example, is the first person Fallout I'd play again. Not to say the others are bad, but New Vegas was more of what I wanted in an fps based on Fallout.

Back in the day many people poopoo'd FO Tactics....myself included. it wasn't FO3 and was a tactical game. Im betting many today still have never played it or hold it in contempt. Please drop that thinking. I played it perhaps 10 years ago myself and kicked myself for waiting. Its a great game and very fun to play. It does have a small story with it and its interesting being part of the BoS.

Every since I played it Ive wished for a full sim of BoS. Imagine it as Brotherhood of Steel Mercenaries if you like. You start with a crappy little base i na crappy little area with only like 2 recruits because of some tragedy. From there you upgrade or move your base, hire more people, and involve the locals in a bid to win them over, protect them, and take back the wastes. Im talking I want a full sim and not simply a party based game like Wasteland 2.....which I need to play someday.

Anyways tactics...try it .

I played it and finished it. I enjoyed it, but I do remember thinking that it was significantly longer than it should have been. It also played very loose with the Fallout canon.

Considering either a replay of tactics or one of the original Fallout as a total jerk face.

Fallout > Fallout2

Fallout3 > Fallout NV

I haven't played Tactics.

I just picked up Fallout 4 and will be playing it very soon.

It is hard to compare Fallout 1 and 2 with the games that followed simply because the game play actually changed. I have recently gone back and played Fallout 1 and enjoyed it, but the turn based play is so much different than what you get in Fallout 3.

Agree, Fallout Tactics is very underrated.

Fallout>Fallout 2> Fallout Tactics>>>Fallout 3=Fallout NV

No interest in playing Fallout 4
