Thank you Ys, and unexpectedly, Marignon for the Death gems!

Marignon, as you will note on your turn, your totally-welcome march through my province led you to easily crush an Independents Event that beat my meager PD. Any chance you would be willing to cede that accursed province? It is in two of my Fortress rings. I have a stealthy commander there already that I will "uncloak" if you are amenable, although I think the option to relinquish, should you choose to do so, won't be available until next turn. Thank you for your consideration.

LM, are you in need of money? I can always, always spend what I have, but I have some potent armies at the moment, and enough allies with Super Armies on my borders that I could spare non-magical recruitment to help out. Least I can do to pay-forward Agartha's help earlier, which allowed me to reach this stage of combat-readiness.

I killed Atlantis's disciple. Looks like they have a decent army in that capital. I am forging some siege magic items to help with a fortress I need to take.

Also, I am using some mercs to assault an Ashdod castle, and will claim the throne this turn. My disciple had to come out of the capital, so lost two turns of her mega research bonus hurts, but the throne will give my earth economy a big bump.

More death gems are on the way Frey land. I generate 6 a turn so they are all yours.

Yay!
How did you acquire mercs? Whenever I play with AI, it doesn't matter how much I overbid, the AI takes them.

I actually just overbid by about 30 gold. I think later in the game, the AI stops overbidding for them.

The one troop I got is just some silly Ape's, not that strong. The other group is a group of Siege specialist leader, and crossbowman, so they are decent support troops. :)

No, after I lost a castle, I seem to be OK licking my wounds and watching the big boys play. Next go round, I'll try to pick tougher, more aggressive race... Which would actually take some dedication to learning on my part.

Heh, I have some super strong troops, but they are expensive, capital only and need a decent bless to carry them in some of the tougher combat. So I have had some leaps and losses. The biggest issue was getting provinces around my capital captured. I start in the water, but had more land spaces around me than water. So that hurt me. But I am now getting on my feet. Without a coop game like this, I would have been killed and ousted a while ago. :)

Let me know what I can do to help anyone. I have hammers if anyone needs them, I can make them and send out to you. I should have enough earth gems to finance it myself if the demand is not too great.

My problem/failing with Dominions is an inability to make long term plans because I really don't know what's out there, particularly as far as construction of items goes. For example, I feel like I now know almost exactly the best strategy for me using the Machaka nation, regarding units and my Pretender build. And I'm capable of looking ahead at the spell schools and deciding what makes me happy. But I don't have a clue what is coming if I research the next level of construction, and outside of obvious things (magic bonuses, dwarven hammer, etc) I don't really feel comfortable with what item might really be good to use. Armor is a great example. Lots of different armor choices with my nation/Pretender, but most all offer less protection than what my leaders/thugs are already wearing. Sure, I could put a Blessed shroud on some dude and get blessing benefits even though he is not sacred, but that gives him a protection of only 9. Why would I do that? Gets frustrating.

Yeah, I;m not real good about know knowing what I want to grow in to as far as magic goes, so it's way underutilized. And then things you would like seem to be different by different race and there are literally dozens of racial approaches when you consider all three eras.

Kinda makes it hard to game the system though. But it does show who is quick to learn and adapt and who is, uh, slow and not so knowledgeable. :ninja:

Dominions 5 - Return of the Octopus Overlords

Post by baelthazar »

R’lyeh can be both easy and tricky. My high end troops are expensive and low protection, but use mind blast which paralyzes and does minimal damage. The paralysis means that the medium units (meteorite guards) can just rip through paralyzed forces. Against flying units, however, they have little defense and get hit hard. Of course I had at least two flying races (Xilbaba and Nazca) next to me.

R’lyeh also has a lot of (IMHO) worthless troops. Why buy the cheaper enslaved AtlantIians? The heavily armed starspawn are far too expensive for what they get you.

And my best forces are luck based - summoned through the void gate. I am still kicking myself for losing my Visitor, who had 4+ astral magic and natural teleport movement.

I think I'm at level 4 construction.

Also Zarathud. I think we are waiting on you (Ulm). I know I've seen you playing Dom 5 :ninja: I'm hoping it's not a synching error.

I'm researching Artifacts.

Tax season is well underway and each 1 project completed is generating 2 more to do. And my assistants are not doing much more than giving me more decisions.

Fan was racing like a jet engine this morning, so "reboot and see if it goes away" let to "Windows is updating" it did not finish before I had to go to work, so the server will down until I get home and hopefully the updates apply OK in my absence and I get you online by 18:00 Eastern.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Ulm is a dreadnaught that gets broken by summons and magic, but I don't think the AI can compete anymore.

I'm about 4 turns away from artifacts. Didn't have any air mages until recently, and tgst slowed me down.

Yeah, I think we just need to get the thrones and we win. We might have enough just need to claim them.

I am ready for a second game. :)

Ys and me don't mix. Blech.. Hate the overpriced troops. Heck, with my start-up it takes two turns to produce even a basic leader in my capital.

If we are close to over, I can yield my throne to Sclelera if you want to come take it with a someone his capable. Just let me know when you are close.

If we start another game, can someone point me to comprehensive spell effects page? For instance I know there is a sea summon spell that summons a leader who also produces blue gems. That's huge. I would like to be able to study these things for the next game so I can choose a better faction/leader/and actual meaningful magic path.

I will be up for another marathon session like this if others are. If we are really close to finish it might be good to start discussion and preparations now. I can run the server again if you like and don't mind the availability problems. I'm fine with the pace we had. I like no pressure.

The best resource for spells, items, units, etc is the Dom 5 mod inspector -

Code: Select all

https://larzm42.github.io/dom5inspector/
As for the next game, since we did Middle Ages, should continue like we did before into Late Ages, and yeah, let's start a new thread to discuss. Not sure if your server could handle 2 games at a time, but by the time we are ready to start the next one, if we haven't finished this one, we're probably close enough we could start another (remember, the early turns go REALLY QUICK; not like these later turns).

My Internet at home went flakey last night and is now down. When checking this morning I took Dom 5 off line and then went to work. I hope the Internet is back and to bring the server back on line by 18:00 Eastern, but I may end up needing to call tech support instead. I won't know until I have time to research.

Good cause I saw you were logged in when everything went to hell. I'm guessing WOW changed nodes around me and didn't feel like that had to tell me about the service outage or resulting IP overhaul (that part I can't complain about. I don't pay for static IPs)
