Revisiting Grim Fandango

Post by Rumpy »

Grim Fandango was one of my favourite adventure games back in the day. I was pretty excited to hear about the remaster, and when it was available for free on GOG a few weeks ago, how could I refuse?

I was very glad to replay it, and it still has a great story and man, that atmosphere! Still very unique in its style and ambition, and somewhat ironically with Disney's ownership of the LA IPs, we now have a movie with some Day of the Dead themes all these years later, and a Pixar one at that. I have to wonder if maybe Grim Fandango has given some inspiration in some way in having that produced.

Game still holds up fairly well, though the pre-rendered backgrounds do feel aged quite a bit. Higher resolution and anti-aliasing is nice, but I'd have gone one step further and maybe given the 3D characters a cel-shaded look to compliment the game's cartoony nature and would make poor Glottis look much better.
