I'm with Blackhawk on this one. And to paraphrase one of the greats:

So if I played Fallout 4 without ever using VATS doe sit become an RPG or is it a FPS because the gunplay doesn't require VATS to be effective?

On a whim this weekend I dusted off my Commodore 64 and fired up Legacy of the Ancients. It actually holds up pretty well! There are obviously lots of design decisions made because of the limitations of the hardware, but they did a fine job of creating an interesting world, and rewarding you for exploring and advancing the plot.
Interestingly my recollection from being a kid was spending months slowly working my way through the game, but I managed to get through probably a third of the game in 4 or 5 hours of playing. I'm sure part of it is having a good idea of where to go and what to do now, but I think the other part is just my gaming time when I was a kid was half an hour here, half an hour there, which made the games last a lot longer.
