I started up a game on normal on Friday but only played a few hours (i'm nowhere near Coop's ability to play 28 hours of a game within a 24 hour time period) with normal difficulty. The combat has been fairly easy so far. Should I bump it up to hard? Or is everyone just sticking with normal?
Definitely bump to hard. Once you get a few levels under you. The first few levels can be challenging on hard, but then the difficulty really flips once you start getting gear, levels and skills.

It gets way too easy later on. It's a short enough game where some challenge will add to the experience. I'm no FPS pro, but hard really feels like normal after the first few levels.

Also abuse your companion special abilities and give them decent weapons. You will not regret it.

So, a word of warning about the character flaw system built in to the game - I'll spoiler it to be safe:
Spoiler:
I took the robophobic flaw, thinking it wouldn't be a big deal, and hey, 1 extra perk point! Well, it happens to affect your character when using SAM the robot on your ship as a character in your party. According to the game description, it's only supposed to affect you when you're being attacked by robots, so it may be a bug - but for now I can't use him because I don't want the permanent hit to stats. Yeah, that's rough. That was my #1 choice for end game DPS.

I agree, now. :) When it presented that first flaw to me I only had 2 perk points, so 50% more seemed great. Oh well. Maybe it’ll make me do another play through later...

I took 3 flaws with no regrets, possibly because I was playing on normal. Two of them were extra damage of a specific type (+25% plasma and +10% something) and the third was -10% melee, which I never used after about 10th level. There were a couple of others I declined. One was reduced stats at elevation and I can't remember the other one, though it was reduced stats in some situation I didn't think was worth it. There is an achievement for taking three flaws, which I discovered by taking 3 flaws.

I was looking forward to this game but I dont think its for me. Granted I dont own it so cant say how it truly is but I have tried to watch it many times on Twitch streams. Tried. it seems its more a 'talk to npc sim' than anything else from all Ive seen. Over the course of a week Ive clicked on 10-12 streams to see it played and every time they are just talking to a big npc head. 2 or 3 times I sat there a good 10 - 15 minutes to see them actually play the game and do something but they simply kept talking to the same npc. Once I saw a guy stop talking and move 10 feet and talk to another npc. Its ridiculous.

I watched one guy 15 min and he actually got a quest to go kill a mob and collect and item. So he stopped talking, walked 10 seconds outside of town and killed the mob and went back and started talking again.

Just now I thought Id try ONE MORE STREAM. Found one that the thumbnail showed a outdoor scene in the pic so I click and what pops up...a big old npc head conversation. F it LOL.

I think you may just be getting unlucky - there's no more NPC conversation in this than most other RPGs, and what's there is typically pretty brief.

I've tried watching streams of many games and I always, frickin' ALWAYS, have a similar problem. For example I was watching a stream of an fps and the streamer is just mindlessly walking around, and items and other things like doors are being highlighted and they just walk past everything without clicking on it. And yes, the other common thing is they are always on a static conversation screen or static inventory screen.

If I'm walking down a hallway in a game and a door gets highlighted, I'm stopping and clicking on the door to see what happens. I spend little time in conversation or inventory screens. This is one reason why live streams of games aren't for me. It's maddening to try to get a feel for the game when the people spend X amount of time trying to read the conversation text and X/10 amount of time actually playing the game. I'm not a speed reader but damn, sometimes I've read the text and they're still not even halfway through.

There are segments of the game that are VERY dialog-heavy though. Especially when you enter a new zone or planet. When I first got to Groundbreaker, I easily spent over an hour doing nothing but talking to NPCs, getting quests, and exploring the new area. That’s not a bad thing for me, as I really enjoy the extensive dialog options. But I can see how it might rub others the wrong way.

If you’re unlucky enough to join a few streams at those times, I can see how it might leave the impression Daehawk came away with.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through (according to a walkthrough I glanced at), and am having a heck of a time finding the motivation to finish. I think my problem is twofold:

1. The lack of a defined villain or threat. I've run around doing a metric shit-ton of "stuff", but it feels like the string pulling me through it all is incredibly thin. After 20'ish hours, I couldn't tell you really who I'm fighting or what I'm really fighting them for, and the entire game seems to boil down to "Go to new zone, have NPC A send you to Point B to kill a bunch of bandits/mauraders/bugs/etc, rinse, repeat."

2. I normally like world building, but this one feels mostly tedious. About the 83rd time I had to listen to an NPC ramble on about some evil corporation or another, my eyes simply glazed over. I couldn't really tell you which company is good, bad, or otherwise because it's gotten to the point where it all runs together and I simply don't care. Also doesn't help that most of the companions are about as interesting as plywood, so I'm not really feeling much pull to do a bazillion fetch quests for them either.

The gameplay is still pretty fun and I might still end up picking at it for a bit, but my interest has waned pretty significantly. Still, I got more out of this one than most other games I play, so...success?

They patched most of it, the errr... "easier" side of that fix. From the linked article:
players on all platforms can now embiggen the fonts used in conversation text, cinematic subtitles, bark subtitles, and terminal text. You'll find the option in the Settings menu's UI tab.
There is still a ton of teeny tiny text in the UI. And yes, those colors on the "amber" monitors that harken back to my earliest days in the IT world are a PITA to read for me too and I'm playing on a 75" 4K TV. Damn old eyes. Need to see how much bumping up the text size helps or if I'll still need to keep my spectacles handy. :|

Just started this game, and I’m really liking it so far. Feels a little like Fallout and Bioshock has a baby in space.

I’m going the route of a dialog specialist and sniper. We’ll see where that gets me. I’m very early in, but so far so good!

Oh no. I got sidetracked by Jedi: Fallen Order just after I got off the first planet in Outer Worlds. I then got further sidetracked by The Talos Principle (due to all the great reviews of it on OO), and that's what I'm currently working through, but I am intending to get back to Outer Worlds on my XBONE next.

But, now that I know it's coming out on Switch, that's mighty tempting . . .

I think there are some flaws that work, but none are a slam dunk. I took one that made me more vulnerable to canids (or whatever they call the dog-like mobs). Seemed a manageable trade off for a perk point that upgraded my bullet time skill.

I'm having a tough time finishing this. I'm 29 hours in on my first playthrough. I'm on
Spoiler:
Monarch.
Looking at a mission list, I'm maybe 1/3 of the way through ("Radio Free Monarch".) I got absolutely hooked for the first 15-20 hours, but it's just gotten... I don't know. Less compelling. Nothing is blatantly bad, but nothing so far is great. The combat isn't great. The writing is good from minute to minute, but loses something in the larger picture. The sidequests so far haven't really had much of a hook. It's like each one is a humorous story that never quite hits the punchline. The NPC companions are interesting, but their stories are thin, and their interactions just feel like background noise. The whole game feels almost there, but not quite.

I don't want to abandon it, but I'm just not being drawn in.

I felt the same way after about 15 hours. It was all fine but just wasn’t super compelling without enough variety to keep it interesting. It didn’t help that it was so similar to the Fallout games that it already felt familiar from the outset. I ended up just racing through and skipping side quests just to finish it.

I saw that! I rather liked The Outer Worlds. It wasn't the open world Fallout experience in space that I would have liked but I wouldn't mind spending more time playing the game. Now wondering if I should buy the DLC or wait a while and get em both so I can play them straight through. Hope either of the DLCs go into some detail about what happened to "Earth that was" since in the game there haven't been any communications from Earth in a while.

I saw that too, and I also read that if you don’t have a save earlier than the “point of no return” in the original game, you have to start over!? I don’t know what saves I have but that could be a major bummer for me. Maybe they’ll figure out a way to patch it and support using an end-game save? Word of warning, I only saw a small blip about this in a reddit thread, and haven’t had a chance to independently verify it yet.

I just read this on Kotaku. I’m not sure if it generated a save file before the end game but I think I’m happy waiting until they patch this out. Well, I hope they do anyway because as much as I liked playing I don’t feel like playing the whole Tartarus level over again after finishing the DLC.

I snagged the expansion pass on EGS today. With the coupon I had saved from the last big sale event, the pass cost the same as buying a single DLC (CAD $20).
