Silent Hunter 4 -Finally!

I finally sunk a carrier in SH4. I've sunk the ones in the scenarios but when playing open world career I've never been successful, it is uncommon to run across them and then to be in the right place...it just doesn't happen often.

But on my way back to port to refit I ran across a task force bearing down on me so I dived below the thermal layer and then as they were passing by, I went to periscope depth and there is the carrier Hiryu 3800 yards to my aft. Which was perfect since I only had 4 aft torpedoes remaining. I fired all 4 in a spread and waited. All 4 hit, walked then from fore to aft and sunk it. Woohoo!

Screen shot as she capsized.

Wow nice. Good pic too. I thought this was a new game coming for some reason and thought "Too late for me". I always wanted a high graphic detailed sub game where enemy ships had holes blew in them and an animated crew fighting fires and abandoning ship and such. My favorite is still Aces of the Deep then maybe some Silent Hunter II and Silent Service II.

It's been a while, but I share your joy. I got deeply into Silent Hunter 3 several years ago and posted an extended thread with lots of pics over on the Gaming Trend forum. Sadly it seems that GT has nerfed their forum, but I did post to the OO forum a shorter play by play, Silent Hunter III - Return From The Deep!. These missions were with SH3 vastly expanded with the Grey Wolves mod. I cruised the North Sea and went around the top of Scotland. On return I found my base has been moved to Kiel so I got a chance to ride the entire Kiel Canal, which is pretty cool. Later cruises included operating out of Penang in Malaysia and then out of La Spezia in northern Italy.

I remember reading that.

That is a cool gaming moment. I remember years ago playing SH2 I came upon a huge mechant fleet with escorts in the middle of a huge fog bank. I was able to submerge, let the escort pass over and pop up in the middle of the fleet and use my deck guns to sink ship after ship. The escorts could never find me and I was able to zip around and the escorts couldn't find me. I imagined the AI task force commander losing his mind. I went home with the highest tonnage totals I'd ever got. Wish I had a screenshot from that time.

When it went under I saw the aircraft slide/float off the deck.

Always wanted to try this game, but if the learning curve is steep, I'll just buy a burger instead.

I'm cheap, but that's how I amassed my millions...…
I got a coupon from Microcenter today that is $20 off any purchase. Anything under $20 is free.
I have been agonizing all day between getting a keyboard for $21 ($1 my cost) or getting the better one for $24 ($4 my cost)…

It can be as difficult as you want it to be. I use auto targeting so the learning curve is really not that steep. With the learning scenarios and the single missions you can pick it up easily

The only way Ubisoft will let me buy it is if I let them keep my credit card info permanently on file apparently. :grund:

$1 is enough of a bargain for me to bite. I played Silent Hunter 3 for a while, but I remember basically nothing about it. And the lessons I learned from Cold Waters are close to useless with this WW2 tech.

I'm already banging my head against a really challenging mission. It's called, uh, "Tutorial." I assume that's a codename for the battle of Midway or Coral Sea or something.
