2020 time! I finished quite a few last year, but also abandoned a bunch, too. I'm in a bit of a video game rut right now, and have been focusing a lot on tabletop stuff instead, so we'll see how this year goes.

Finished (PC unless specified):
  • Void Bastards
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag
  • Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  • Metro: Last Light Redux
  • System Shock 2
  • Strange Brigade
  • World War Z
  • Dungeon Defenders
  • Metro: Exodus
  • Mafia 2
  • Tick Tock: A Tale for Two
Playing:
  • Pathfinder: Kingmaker
Side Games (multiplayer, coop only etc):
  • GTA Online
  • Rainbow Six: Siege
  • Sea of Thieves
  • Dungeon Defenders
  • World War Z
1/4 - Void Bastards. Great game. It's described as a rogue-lite, but I don't think that's entirely accurate. It's a game where you die repeatedly, and your character gets reset each time, but the main element of your progress remains. That makes it a good strategy at times to intentionally die achieving some objective in order to start out with it complete on the next run. If I had to describe it, I'd say that it's a little like System Shock mixed with a lot of Paranoia (the pen-and-paper game.) It was a lot of fun, although I was ready for the end a bit before I actually finished it.

Currently playing:
PC/Mac:
None at the moment [I don't have a gaming PC at the moment after my Razer Blade crapped out and Razer proofed that they are a bunch of a**holes]

PS4:
MLB The Show 20 (partly improved --like the batting-- party a bit disappointing --RTTS feels neglected)
World of Warships: Legends (I'm having a lot of fun with this one)
Stellaris (not ideal on a console but fun with the latest patch)

Nintendo Switch:
Animal Crossing (I feel bad for enjoying this ...)

PS3, PS VITA & 3DS XL:
[Nothing]

On the short list:
The Witcher 3 - PS4 (what a great game, need to get back into it)
Pillars of Eternity - PC (played this quite a bit but stopped, want to pick up again)
Marvel's Spider-Man - PS4
Red Dead Redemption 2 - PS4
Banner Saga - Switch
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Switch (really liked it so far, need to pick it up again)

Completed:
florence - Switch (nice little "interactive" story)
The Division 2 - PS4 (started this when it came out and played a lot, then paused for a long time. Now finished the "story" and I'm now in the endgame)

Thanks for reminding me about Void Bastards, need to get back to it, especially since I just found out it's on the Microsoft store and I have Game Pass. In general I don't play games that 'finish', as I like games like Astroneer, Factory Town and Autonauts. I played all of those a ton, along with Dragon Quest Builders 2 (although that game does finish, I didn't finish it).

I've really moved away from what I call the 'execution' style games (where how well you do is based on how well you execute stuff) to the more creative sandboxy type games where I can experiment to my hearts content. I like those games a lot. The other games just leave me annoyed an frustrated when I can't 'do it the right way'.

Finished 2020

Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 (1/20/20) - Definitely better than I thought it was going to be. Not great, but it held my attention for almost 30 hours
Borderlands 3 (6/15/20) - Would recommend, particularly if you enjoyed Borderlands 2.
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (7/20/20) - Strongly recommend. It took me ~70 hours to play through the story on Easy. Still working my way through DLC
Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone DLC (8/11/20) - At around 10 hours, this deserves to be mentioned here. Amazing that it's DLC
Far Cry - New Dawn (10/18/20) - Doesn't add anything new, but the sidekick characters are enjoyable and the story is decent

5 games finished in 2019

Finished
  1. Firewatch (Jan 2) Rating: 5/8 (opinion)
  2. Hate Plus (Jan 10) Rating: 4/8 (opinion)
  3. Life is Strange (Feb 2, PC) Rating: 7/8 (opinion)
  4. The Pedestrian (Feb 15, 12 hrs, completed without hints) Rating: 6/8 (opinion)
  5. Undertale (May 28, PC, 15.5 hrs) Rating: 7/8 (opinion)
  6. Starfighter Research & Development (July 6, IBRJE) Rating: 3/8. This vertical shmup, in which you fly through a "simulator" to unlock upgrades, is not a good game. It's far behind even Warblade from 15 years ago in gameplay and presentation. Still, it's oddly addictive. You can get powerful weapons fairly quickly, lighting up the screen with colorful bullets. The tech tree has some humorous writing. And the "Mega Boss" is pretty cool.
  7. Can Androids Pray: Red (July 23, PC, IBRJE): Rating: 3/8. This visual novel is a 15-minute existential conversation between 2 pilots of wrecked, stranded mechs. I like that the backdrop resembles a polygonal mech game instead of the usual manga. But the dialogue does little for me.
  8. There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension (Sept 6, PC, 7hrs) Rating: 4/8. (opinion)
Rating system: 6-8 = Dank; 4-5 = Slightly dank; 0-3 = Not dank.
IBRJE = Itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality (chart of recommendations)

Playing
  1. King's Bounty: The Legend: Playing on Easy difficulty. My mage blew the whole dwarven slave conspiracy wide open. (I should have named him Cochise.) He helped Violetta get her groove back. Now he's in hell searching for a lost pair of keys.
  2. Lost Odyssey: on disc 4 of 4.
  3. Tidalis: I'm on level 86 out of 115, having skipped 8 levels.
Backburner
  1. Lunar Silver Star Story Touch: I'm near the end, but am in a frustrating boss battle and am done trying to complete this overrated classic. I'll YouTube the rest.
  2. Path of Exile: I started playing during the Legion league and had a great time, raising my Necromancer to level 60 and reaching Act 7. But the transition from Legion to Blight is forcing me to do a respec. I don't feel like doing that, so I've put the game down for a while.
Abandoned
  1. Fortune-499: This is an RPG with deckbuilding, rock-scissors-paper combat, and office satire. From positive YouTube reviews, I was expecting to like it, but got fed up with the difficulty and unfairness after about an hour.
  2. Gris: I gave up near the end. Thoughts here.
  3. Chains: match-3 game with some wobbly physics. The game now crashes so I can't play it. Just as well, I couldn't even get past the second level.
  4. Cherry Tree High Comedy Club: free visual novel/dating sim on Steam. Seems too laborious to enjoy.
  5. The Yawhg: Too buggy. I returned it. It's not great interactive fiction, anyway, though I'll buy the soundtrack.
  6. A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build: a cleverly disguised box-pushing (aka Sokoban) game. You push snowballs (which get bigger in snow) to form snowmen. It's nice, but still just a box-pushing game. Snowmie don't play dat.
  7. Life in Captivity (IBRJE): for some reason I played another Sokoban game. It's a mix of Sokoban and Conway's Game of Life. It was neat enough to try a few levels and get the gist. Weird visuals, weirder soundtrack.
  8. Fate Tectonics (IBRJE): This is a god game in which you build your world one tile at a time while trying not to anger the gods who have conflicting priorities. I enjoyed the challenge of maintaining the balance even though I had to sometimes fix the damage when the gods got angry. I also liked the 1990s aesthetic which reminded me of Master of Magic. But the tile-laying can be tedious and the game has a tendency to corrupt my saves.
  9. Beglitched (IBRJE): This match-3 hacking adventure has you match icons into tools to help you locate and blow up the enemy that's hiding behind one of the icons. It's a neat mix of luck and deduction with a cute pink aesthetic. But if you lose all your health, you have to restart at the beginning of the chapter, which can mean losing a lot of progress. That's tiresome, and the wacky writing doesn't grab me, either. Stopping in chapter 4.
  10. Minit (IBRJE): Acclaimed black-and-white Zelda-like game in which you have just one minute to live. Each time you die, you respawn back at home with whatever loot you've acquired. Really fun at first, and the music's good, but I grew tired of the restarts and the artificial barriers to progress that are endemic to Zelda-likes.
  11. Brushwood Buddies (IBRJE): Craft the goal object by breaking things down into ingredients and forming the ingredients into tools, following recipes as you go. A tedious test of logic and memory. I stopped after 8 stages of the campaign.
  12. Helltaker: free on Steam, this is a well-disguised box-pushing puzzler about a man trying to build a harem of demonic women. It goes for a sexy, provocative, and humorous style with its art and dialogue. Unfortunately, the 10th and final level is a frustrating arcade sequence. I quit and watched the ending on YouTube, which was interesting enough.
Time machine: 2006 (15); 2007 (14); 2008 (20); 2009 (23); 2010 (13); 2011 (15); 2012 (17); 2013 (25); 2014 (25); 2015 (9); 2016 (8); 2017 (9); 2018 (2); 2019 (22)

Bard's Tale IV

Abandoned
Corruption 2029 - played all but the last three or four missions and it's become too much of a slog. It's a lesser game than Mutant Year Zero as there is no engaging dialogue, the characters are too similar, and the maps are recycled. Bought it for bargain bin cost so not unhappy with the purchase but I could have been happy with the game ending after the 'Darkwood' set of missions. 5 o'8 tentacles

"FINISHED"

Played with my kid;
JAN - Pikuniku - meh. The music is kind of catchy though.
FEB - Chuchel - another short puzzle game. Very weird.
FEB - Grow Home - Subnautica for kids. My only real complaint with this one is the camera controls are not very good, but I don't know how it could be better.
FEB - Horizon Chase Turbo - light retro racer
FEB - ABZU - (mostly) relaxing aquatic adventure
MAR - Mutant Year Zero & Seeds of Evil DLC - meh. Main problem is that the most fun way to play the fights is also nearly impossible. Sneaking around the edges to pick off loners is fun a few times, but not every time.
MAR - Wuppo - another one that I played through with my daughter. It's a weird one and it took a bit to get into (lots of front loaded nonsense words) but it was actually pretty good and I really enjoyed the odd quirky world. Also, this game makes you wait in lines... and not just for a few seconds, but minutes! That's an eternity in a video game. And somehow, it works.
APR - Slime Rancher - as much as this type of game can be finished. Story arc complete and all areas explored. Still have some secrets to find and techs to unlock so may be playing for a little while yet.
MAY - XCOM Chimera Squad - A bit tedious toward the end, but I still liked it. Certainly better than Mutant Year Zero.
MAY - XCOM 2 w/ all DLC including War of the Chosen. I don't think I ever finished this when it first came out, and I don't think it would have held my interest without War of the Chosen. After I killed those three off the game became less fun but I was so close to the end.
JUN - Cat Quest - Played through this with my kid. It's not that great and the writing is pretty awful, but she liked the cats.
JULY - Supraland
JULY - Void Bastards
JULY - For the King - first campaign. I don't think I like this enough to do more though.
SEP - Lines Infinite - All 100 designed puzzles, plus the first 25 of the infinite puzzles to get all steam achievements. The infinite puzzles are not that great and don't have much variety in how to solve them (despite being unique).
SEP - 60 Parsecs - Won on my second game. Not sure how much replayabilty there is to this, but I had fun with it for a few hours.
OCT - Legend of Grimrock II - Had to look up a few of the trickier puzzles, and am not going to hunt down every little secret. Liked it quite a bit.

Operencia: The Stolen Sun
With my heritage being Hungarian, I very much appreciated a game that featured Central European folklore. The artwork, writing and voice acting are top notch, as is the vision. Battles are easy at the start if you're an experienced dungeon crawler. Each map has numerous secrets to uncover. The character growth is handled very well. The movement on the grid are fantastic as you can WSAD along with your mouse. Hard to explain but, it made the movement so more fluid.

On the down side, I found the passive skills non-intuitive as to how they worked with equipped skills; knowing what skills belonged to what (house)? still eludes me. A few of the features (and puzzles!) you would expect an experienced RPG creator are, in fact, non-intuitive but the whole is extremely impressive for a team launching their first RPG. But, they're Magyar, so how could they fail ;)

Oh - two of the potions you can craft are Paprika and Slivovic.

Purchased on Epic during their Winter Sale for ~ $5 so one of the best bang/$ ever, imo.

Last year was a banner year for actually finishing video games for me. So far this year I am not even coming close to finishing anything. Hopefully I will finish something before the year is out.

In Progress:

Finished:
Death Stranding - 20200327 - Wow.
SUPERHOT - 20200411 - Short but pretty awesome experience.
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts - 20200412 - Pretty short, but interesting experience.
Bard's Tale 4 - 20200419 - Fun turn based tactical combat
XCOM Chimera Squad - 20200427 - XCOM light, but cheap enough to be ok
Gears Tactics - 20200506 - A solid turn based tactics game that got a little old by the end
AO Tennis 2 - 20200520 - A not terrible tennis experience!
Minecraft Dungeons - 20200531 - Diablo Lite - short but kind of interesting
Tales of Berseria - 20200613 - Meh. Lots of meh.
The Last of Us Part II - 20200627 - Not what I expected, but enjoyed it anyway.
The Pedestrian - 20200628 - Another great puzzle game
Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem - 20200701 - buggy Diablo 3 clone...
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun - 20200711 - less than I hoped it would be, but still a challenging bit of fun
DLC -- Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds - 20200712 - I finally got back to HZD to run through this and it was a treat
Red Dead Redemption 2 - 20200717 - FINALLY
God of War - 20200719 - also FINALLY
Half-life: Alyx - 20200724 - a pretty impressive experience
Life is Strange 2 - 20200725 - not nearly as engaging as the first game, but worth the time
Uncharted 3 - 20200726 - No idea why I bailed on this initially, finished it in a single day.
Uncharted 4 - 20200730 - Dragged on a little longer than I would like, but still good.
Nioh 2 - 20200814 - It's Nioh, but MORE!
American Fugitive - 20200820 - Short and light but fun.
Wasteland 3 - 20200904 - Never finished 2, but loved 3.
Risk of Rain 2 - 20200913 - Fun co-op rogue-ish. Beat it on the easy difficulty, may keep going.
Green Hell - 20200918 - A very different story based survival game. Very cool and realistic.
Batman: Arkham Knight - 20200923 - Finally! In the end a good story. Also, screw Mr. Nigma.
Mafia: Definitive Edition - 20200926 - Very nice trip down nostalgia lane
Starcom Nexus - 20201010 - Fun little explore, fight, and improve your ship, top down shooter
Hades - 20201020 - Way better than I initially thought. Hard to put down.

Abandoned:
Dicey Dungeons

Release Tracking:
Watch Dogs Legion - 10/29/2020
Assassin's Creed Valhalla - 11/17/2020
Cyberpunk 2077 - 11/19/2020
Kerbal Space Program 2 - 2021?
Dying Light 2 - *shrug*
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 - *shrug*

Finished my frist game of the year, Pikuniku.
A simple puzzle platformer I played with my daughter. I paid less than a dollar for it, which is good because it's very short, also, it's not very good. Mostly because it doesn't know if it's a kid's game or not. Puzzles are too simple for adults and too hard for kids, all the dialogue is text (my 3 year old can't read yet) and has some mild profanity, and the game teaches you gameplay/puzzle solving skills but never really builds on them.

plot spoiler if you care;
Spoiler:
There is one part I really like though, and it happens right at the beginning. Your character wakes up in a cave and your first task is to find your way out. As you make your way into the nearby village it becomes clear that you are a legendary BEAST that all the villagers are scared of. It's kind of clever and fun, but it's the only moment in the game it's able to really do anything surprising.
It wasn't terrible and my daughter enjoyed some of it (especially the few and far between drawing mini games), but overall I don't recommend it. If you are looking for something similar with more style, better story, and better gameplay I suggest Botanicula instead.

9/10 Kentucky Route Zero (PC) - Now that the game is actually finished, I'm finally done with it and all the interludes. Truly unlike any other adventure game, uniquely beautiful.
5/10 Tender Loving Care (PC) - If you didn't care enough to play this DVD game back in the day, don't bother now. You will not feel like starting over when it fatally crashes.
9/10 The Dream Machine (PC) - Fantastic adventure game that would have been a 10 if not for Flash and one confusing stretch in one chapter.
8/10 The White Door (PC) - Pretty satisfying for a short puzzle game. Rusty Lake games are all bizarre and worth playing.
10/10 GRIS (PC) - It's rare that a puzzle platformer keeps my attention for more than three hours and leaves me wishing it hadn't ended yet. Beautiful.
7/10 Arcade Moonlander (PC) - Got it when it was free. Good physics, short. Worth a try if you liked simple arcade games like this back in the day.
8/10 The Gardens Between (PC) - Another beautiful but short puzzle game, this one based around a very clever mechanic for manipulating each little world where two children play.
7/10 Alice's Patchworks 2 (PC) - Manages to neither break nor improve on the design of the first one. Decent game if you like jigsaw puzzles.
9/10 The Journey Down: Chapter 2 (PC) - Really impressive second part of a game that pay homage to Grim Fandango and later Monkey Island, but also great by its on merit.
6/10 Where Angels Cry: Tears of the Fallen (PC) - Good artwork and okay story but mediocre minigame design and a lot of recycling of images in the hidden object scenes.
7/10 Nightmares From the Deep 3: Davy Jones (PC) - I mean, it's about as good as hidden object games get, if you don't mind a whole lot of the same. Some decent puzzles.
8/10 Glass Masquerade 2: Illusions (PC) - Good jigsaw puzzle game if you don't mind placing irregular pieces by shape rather than by image.
8/10 The Journey Down: Chapter 3 (PC) - After such strong first and second chapters, the gameplay in this one was short and rushed, but it was still a good ending.
7/10 Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith (PC) - Lots of frustrating, but generally worth playing since I did enjoy Jedi Knight 1 and 2 back when they were new.
7/10 Bone Act 2: The Great Cow Race (PC) - Really pretty good, and actually funny, but it's a shame Telltale never came back to it and finished the series.
9/10 The Room Three (PC) - Fantastic finale to the series, beautiful and expertly designed puzzles. If I had felt more tension in the story sooner, it would be 10/10.
8/10 Stasis (PC) - Another impressive adventure game that narrowly misses a 9/10 for being a bit glitchy, and even though the deaths aren't too punishing, some are annoying.
8/10 Downfall (PC) - The good is that it's the follow-up game to The Cat Lady. The bad is that I didn't like it as much as The Cat Lady. But it's still really worth it.
9/10 The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles (PC) - Narrowly misses a 10/10 due only to one bad puzzle and the annoyance of swapping inventory items between characters.
8/10 The Procession to Calvary (PC) - It's really a great follow-up to Four Last Things if you like the cut-out-classic-paintings animation style. But kind of too short and pretty easy.
8/10 Lorelai (PC) - Very well done except for some major struggles I was having with the game running, despite it just being a Unity game. And not as twisted or psychotic as the first two.
7/10 The Walking Dead: A New Frontier (PC) - The game was okay, but I didn't relate to the characters and the binary choices nearly as well as in earlier seasons.
10/10 Tales From the Borderlands (PC) - More satisfying in every way than the later Walking Dead seasons, as long as you can still enjoy that kind of gameplay. Well done.
9/10 Portal Stories: Mel (PC) - Seriously, the only thing I don't like about this major free mod is that apparently story and advanced mode are just a bit different in difficulty, which isn't clear.
8/10 Penumbra: Black Plague (PC) - Relatively short, but quite good if you liked Overture. The physics engine can be fun or frustrating in fairly equal measure. A bit dated now.
5/10 Penumbra: Requiem (PC) - The most inexplicably dumb game I've finished in a while. Four hours of gray rooms completely lacking what makes the first two games good.
10/10 The Turing Test (PC) - Excellent 1st person puzzle. There's simply nothing wrong with it. Other than having an AI character and you're trying to open doors, it doesn't even rip off too much Portal.
8/10 Simulacra (PC) - Like most FMV interactive movies, I can't imagine playing over and over to get different scenes, but at least it is actually interactive and cleverly done.
6/10 Simulacra: Pipe Dreams (PC) - I mean, it's free and structured the same as Simulacra, but the tone and subject are dumber, making the game less creepy and more annoying.
7/10 Devolverland Expo (PC) - Yes it's a short free advertisement, but it's neat and I'm counting it.
8/10 Simulacra 2 (PC) - Higher expectations, higher quality. Not the most fun subject matter, but at least this FMV game has some idea how to be a game.
7/10 Contrast (PC) - The game is probably better to most people, but as much as I like the style, I really, really suck at platformers.
7/10 She Sees Red (PC) - Kind of decent interactive movie, totally reliant on the choose-your-own-adventure mechanic to find four endings.
8/10 Frog Fractions (PC) - A surprisingly entertaining little 1-2 hour free game that you shouldn't read anything about. Just play it all the way through.
8/10 The Park (PC) - Short horror story that starts in a theme park but turns out to be about depression and hopelessness, with Lovecraft and Slender Man references and effective jump scares.
8/10 Samsara Room (PC) - Short, free Rusty Lake game that is certainly worth playing for an hour and a half. Just enough of the creepy from the other games to be interesting.

Finished Horizon Chase Turbo.
I must have picked this up in a bundle somewhere. I was looking for a quick time waster and then before I knew it I finished the first World Tour campaign.
It's a simple, retro style racer. Movement is satisfyingly chunky and keyboard/mouse works fine but controller was better.
For the most part tracks are right in the sweet spot of being difficult without being frustrating. Most races I was able to place top 5 on my first go. With a little effort and better unlocks it's not too difficult to get top 3 finishes in everything.

As you finish races you score points based on performance, these points act as thresholds, once crossed you unlock more races, cars, and upgrades.

The best part about it is I beat both JetFred & Smoove's fastest race times by a solid 30 seconds.
Eat my dust suckers. :)

Recommended as a fun distraction.

Yes, but in how many attempts? My actual play time is probably 30 minutes. :P

Otherwise, my only complaint was that the AI difficulty seemed REALLY rubber-bandy.

Attempts? I don't know. Maybe 2 or 3 tops. I had a huge advantage coming back with faster - upgraded car though so it wasn't a fair match up.

The AI is VERY rubber-bandy. This isn't a race simulator though so it didn't bother me.

Dunno if I'll actually finish anything this year, but I''ll at least stake a claim in this thread

Games finished
- Final Fantasy XIV (through patch 5.2 on main, and through ARR on alt)
- Thief (2014) - B+ - PS4 - April 9 - It's a shame this was branded as a Thief game. It's really a fun, tense, stealth-action game...but it's not Thief. Still really fun. (13 hours)
- Sparkle 2 - B+ - PS4 - April 23. A knockoff of the old Zuma match-3, with surprisingly high production values and a high fantasy theme. I’ve always been a sucker for those, had a blast with this one. 5 hours
- Final Fantasy VII Remake - A - April 25 - A wonderful new way to experience my all-time favorite game. With an ending that absolutely blew my damn mind. 34 hours.
- FIFA 20 (PS4) - B- - May 11 - Finished a full season as Liverpool, coming in second (behind a Man City team that would have set every conceivable EPL record). Enjoyable, but frustrating. Never did really get the hang of finishing.
- Legacy of Dragonholt (board) - B - July 18- Very neat idea of the world's most involved and complex "choose your own adventure" game. Got a terrible ending though. 10'ish hours.
- Madden 20 (PS4) - C - July 29. Finished a season, winning the Super Bowl with KC. Good substitute for the lack of sports, but a wildly unrealistic game.
- Ghost of Tsushima (PS4) - A - August 8. Probably my second favorite game of the PS4 generation. Absolutely beautiful and a blast to play. Wonderful game. Probably around 50 hours.
- Dragon Age Inquisition (PS4) - A - August 23. Second playthrough, this time as an elven mage. Completed all the DLC as well, which was fantastic. Probably my favorite high fantasy open world(ish) RPG. 68 hours.
- Sagrada (iOS) - A- - August 29. Excellent implementation of the board game. Played through all the campaign levels.
- Devil May Cry 5 (PS4) - B - September 5. Fun, stylish, and just the right length. Have no interest in going back and chasing high scores, but definitely had fun running through it once. 10 hours(ish)
- Control (PC) - B - September 10. Quite the head-trip of a game. Wasn't crazy about traveling all over the confusing building, but unraveling the story was quite fun. 13 hours.
- Star Wars Squadrons (PS4) - B+ - October 12. Climbing into the cockpit of an X-Wing or TIE was absolutely incredible and the story was fun. A for the campaign, but a C for MP...mostly because I'm absolutely terrible at it and don't find it fun at all. Probably 10 hours all told.

Resident Evil 2

I had never played the Resident Evil series, having (somehow) categorized them as pure action-shooters, fighting off wave after wave of mobs. No. I don't know how I got that impression, either. Marketing?
In any case, I saw enough of RE2 to give it a try during a sale and am very glad I did.
A nice balance of puzzles, adventuring, and of course shooting the alluded to formerly-alive or mutant-enabled with a good variety of boomsticks.

Thoroughly enjoyable. 'll keep an eye out on the franchise as a result.

The Magician's Apprentice

Interactive story game (no graphics, sound, just text) telling the story of you as an apprentice to the Magician of Florence who, upon his death, must uncover his secrets and determine your path forward.
Nominated for a Nebula for game writing (as was her work for The Road to Canterbury last year). She is also the author of the Alice Payne books.

Solid game set in 1512 Florence with political machinations in play and magic as an overlay. Three (3) hours for one play-through but, with the myriad of paths offered, offers good replay value. On sale now for CDN $3.48.

Finished ABZU

Started Subnautica with my almost 4 year old, with the intention of just playing around in the shallows (and not advancing into the kelp). That didn't really work for two reasons though, but mostly because it was still too scary. I had forgotten about the little fish that rush you and explode. The second reason was of course we couldn't progress very far.
So we played ABZU instead, and I'm glad we did. Each new area was ooohed and aaahed, fish were excitedly pointed out, and she was invested in the story of us and our robot friends as we chased the shark into deeper waters.

Uncharted 1 - I wish I hadn't bothered and just read the recap. 13 years haven't been good to this game. It is easily one of the worst games I've played in years. I'm pretty sure I would have hated it at the time. It features boring, repetitive, and mindless action. Drake's exasperated comments about the endless waves of soldiers was unintentionally mirroring how trying on my patience this game was. Still after killing an entire European army over the entire game, the end game is a ridiculous try and die real-time event button mash (I died about 15-20 times trying to figure out what I needed to do) against a 'what a twist' villain that the player sees for a total of 5 minutes beforehand. It's awful.

Mark of the Ninja (Remastered)

Really glad that I (re)discovered this on a distant Steam sale. I abandoned this the first time around as I just failed repeatedly. This time, I just took failure as a natural part of the game. The checkpoints are generous so very little progress was lost. A Klei game that doesn't disappoint. Art direction and story are superb, and I can run the game on my GTX780 at 2K. Beautiful.

I still am horrible at these types of games but look forward to going back to earlier maps so that I can unlock more honour and the rewards they come with.

Void Bastards

I bought this as part of a recent Humble Bundle sale and it's the star of the package.

Great comics presentation, solid gameplay, a randomized star map, varied ships with different layouts, supplies, weapons, crafting parts, and enemies. An Action/FPS at heart, mixed with a strategy gameboard.

Batman: Arkham Asylum - I got this right after it came out because I had fond memories of Batman as a child. I got about 15 minutes in and realized that I didn't have any clue who most of the characters were. I just felt like I was missing so much. So I put it on hold, and spent a few months reading Batman comics. It was the catalyst that got me into comics and made me a DC fan. After about a year I went back and played it and was able to follow along with no trouble. It was interesting going back now after another nine or ten years spent reading DC stuff. There is so much hidden in there for someone who knows the setting.

Batman: Arkham City - I'd also played this one before. I'm planning to run through the whole series, as I never finished Origins and never played Knight, so I hit this one as well. I had a lot of fun, but had no desire to go for 100% completion. The puzzles for doing so weren't great. Still, a fun game.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag - I did something different this time. Usually when I play open world games I spend so much time chasing side activities that I burn out long before I finish the story, leading me to either abandon the game (Witcher 3, twice) or forcing myself to slog through to the end without fun. This time I actively ignored anything that didn't sound fun. I'd open chests up if I happened to be near them. I upgraded the ship because the ship combat was fun. Other than some random piracy, though, I just stayed on the path and really enjoyed myself. That said, Ubi got on my nerves as they do with so many of their titles. How do you get money in this game? The fleet system, which you can play on your ship, or handle when away from your computer with the app. The app which they turned off support for two years ago. And the fleet system is slow, but sped up if you have active friends playing as well, and is balanced with that in mind. Hunting rare creatures takes absolutely forever unless you have friends playing, which populates your world with extra spawns. Of course, nobody plays a decade-old game anymore, and they never bothered to update it to rebalance for that. Many cool unlocks are tied to community challenges that no longer exist.

Ubi decided that this was going to be a social game whether you liked it or not (to get you to convince your friends to buy it), then once the social element died off, they turned off the cool features that required is and abandoned the game.

Heaven's Vault

Captivating. Overall, a very solid Adventure with puzzles focused on gathering clues and pieces to help interpret hieroglyphic-like words. A little buggy at end-game with the star map freezing so that takes off on tentacle. It took me a while to realize that green-lit Q were important as I was figuring out whether to Question or Reply.

I guess I am "finished" with Dirt 4 and WRC6. I've won Triple Cown in Dirt 4, and I'm not into Gymkhana stuff. WRC6 I've won WRC for the season. Technically I've signed on for 3 year contract, but since I won WRC, they have to release me at end of year 1. And I don't feel like starting over in jWRC with a higher difficulty level.

Driving model is kinda weird in WRC6. Cars just feel... ponderous, lots of momentum and very planted on the road, can't hardly ever flip them.

Going to start again in Dirt Rally (1). Never really played it much due to a sucky PC at the time. Will try to enjoy it a bit before moving onto DR2.
