EPIC to become a publisher too

Post by Daehawk »

This is sorta how I always imagined a publisher should be. They have zero control. It appears Epic will let devs keep 50% of profits. I still dont think publishers should be funding games...simply marketing and publishing of them. But I guess a lot of devs couldn't make a game then....which is strange.

Epic Games announces they are now a third-party publisher, announcing Epic Games Publishing is partnering on upcoming projects from gen DESIGN, Playdead, and Remedy Entertainment. Similar to the Epic Games Store, they plan an aggressive royalty structure, promising developers at least half the profits after expenses. "We’re building the publishing model we always wanted for ourselves when we worked with publishers," says Epic CEO Tim Sweeney. Here's an accompanying Announce Trailer and here is what they are revealing of their plans for now:

Full creative freedom and ownership. Developers retain 100% of all intellectual property and full creative control of their work.
Fully-funded projects. Epic Games Publishing will cover up to 100% of development costs, from developer salaries to go-to-market expenses such as QA, localization, marketing, and all publishing costs.
50/50 profit sharing. Developers earn a fair share for their work -- once costs are recouped, developers earn at least 50% of all profits.

Well, they're certainly stirring up the market.

Also, it's Epic, not EPIC. Unless it stands for Everyone Plays, Infinite Cash.

For the record it's not remotely strange. It's hard to make a game when you are starving and don't have a place to live.

Since I started gaming Ive always thought a development company should have money to run itself like any other company. The publisher should only advertise and publish the game. basically now days publishers should be a thing of the past with digital distribution. Its always been a reverse system to me.

Now if one company had a division that was devs thats different. Thats inside their own company. Strikes me as simply outsourcing games right now except the place they outsource to already has the idea for the game.
