Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League - Rocksteady

Post by Blackhawk »

From the makers of the Arkham games (except for Origins.) It has a lot of potential, as there are a huge number of villains who have taken turns in Task Force X.

I'm trying to see where this game would go... Is it going to be a bit like Arkham City where the chosen member to play as (and I'd imagine you'd only play ONE person, maybe campaign will have to switch back and forth?) fighting bad guys, but sometimes with a choice to let the guy go for a favor later? Given there are quite a few guys with diverse talents, I'd imagine you need some set missions and some procedural missions...

I don't know. I'd love if it was Arkhamverse and Arkham-like, but for all we know it may be a completely different type of game. I think we'll see announcements on the 22nd, which is when DC is doing its 'Fandome' virtual convention.

It would be easy to link it to the Arkham games, given that Oracle (the voice in your ear in the Arkham games) worked with them regularly (her first appearance was in Suicide Squad.)

I don't think the game would work if you're playing random characters and jumping back and forth between them on various missions, working on a collective story. Not only is it hard to feel a connection, but designing a game to try to make things interesting/fun for a variety of character types (powers, abilities, etc...) would likely result in a mess of a game.

Instead it makes more sense (IMHO) to have a game where you're playing a random D-list character that interacts with the more famous/well-known associates of the Squad. At some point, DLC for the game would have you playing as a specific character (like how the Arkham games eventually let you play Catwoman and Nightwing) in a side story specifically designed for them.

Or it's a completely different type of game. There are other ways to handle it.

It could be something mission based where there is an overarching plot, but each mission involves a different character (a little like the new Avenger's game), perhaps with support from other members (Deadshot on overwatch, etc.) Maybe with meta-game where you play Oracle or Amanda Waller.

I could be something comparable to single player GTA V heists where each character on a mission has their own task and you switch between them (so start with Black Spider, sneaking in and getting into position, then switch to Clayface infiltrating the security control room through various disguises, then switch to Deadshot covering Plastique as she makes her way into the power station to blow the transformer, back to Black Spider to carry out the objective, then to Deathstroke, holding open everyone's escape route.)

It is unlikely, but it could work beautifully as a turn based X-Com style game. You'd play Rick Flagg, commanding the team.

Bad option: It's another hero-shooter battle royale, ala Apex Legends/Fortnite

Worst option: Given my record for disappointments, it's a mobile game.

Shadows Tactics clone would fit. It would be a bitter disappointment, but it would fit a cast of oddball characters with different abilities.

It could be a Left 4 Dead/Vermintide type first person action. It could be a Diabloesque ARPG. I think most of us are hoping for a 3rd person action game in the Arkham universe. It would be interesting to see what they'd do with such a variety of abilities and personalities.

This will be a four-player cooperative game set in the Arkham universe that is described as a hybrid between the previous Arkham games and a third person shooter.

The thread titles has been updated with the full title of the game.

Delightful!
I probably won't play it since I have the reflexes of a very confused 2-handed slug, but the trailer was great.

I finally got time to sit and watch the trailer. First thought: looks like it all comes down to Brainiac controlling the League and the Suicide Squad being sent in against them. It'll be interesting, especially depending on which Justice League members you're going up against. Superman we know. A Green Lantern? Martian Manhunter? Either one could be just as challenging as Superman - if not more so.

Positive: Looks good!

Negative: Ugh, I wish gameplay trailers were actually gameplay with actual in-game cameras and a HUD instead of quick-cuts with custom angles and no interface. This shows us the engine and some character abilities. It doesn't really show gameplay. Is this objective based, ala Arkham? Is it L4D-like?

The internet is telling me it looks like a game called Sunset Overdrive, a game that was released in 2014. I can genuinely say I never heard of it. Apparently released on STEAM in 2018.

Delayed until Spring of 2023

We've made the difficult decision to delay Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League to Spring 2023. I know a delay is frustrating but that time is going into making the best game we can. I look forward to bringing the chaos to Metropolis together. Thanks for your patience.

Yes, an internet connection is required to play Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League solo or via online co-op.

I watched the "insider's view" and so far, it looks good. Not quite my type of game, but it does look good.

Not really a spoiler, but I'll mark it anyway.
Spoiler:
Suicide Squad was sent by Amanda Waller into Metropolis. When they got there, they found Metropolis has turned into a warzone. Brainiac is in town, and turned its citizens into zombie soldiers. Brainiac even corrupted the Justice League, and you'll soon find corrupted versions of Green Lantern and Flash. Obviously, that's going to your job... to kill them all, AND Brainiac, and liberate Metropolis...

There actually is a new video out that is generating some buzz.

It's a 20-minute video -- I'm giving you a fair warning because otherwise someone is going to complain about that, and I don't want to hear it. :coffee:

Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad game looks a lot more fun now
Batman: Arkham developer Rocksteady Studios peeled back the curtain on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in a new 20-minute video on Wednesday, a preview that sure goes a long way toward addressing the tepid reception to the game’s previous reveal.

Rocksteady’s inaugural Suicide Squad Insider video focuses on the story and gameplay of its 2024 Suicide Squad game. It re-establishes that the big threat in the upcoming game is a Brainiac-controlled Justice League and pretty much the entire populace of Metropolis, which has been “enhanced” by alien invaders.

The video also explains how the Suicide Squad (aka Task Force X) becomes so super-powered themselves: Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark raid the Hall of Justice museum to steal a bunch of gear from superheroes and supervillains. Harley will use Batman’s grapple gun and glider to move through Metropolis, while Captain Boomerang wields Doctor Sivana’s Speed Force Gauntlet and Deadshot flies around using Gizmo’s jetpack. King Shark is just King Shark.

In the new footage, the game’s fast-paced, vertically oriented traversal through Metropolis, paired with a mix of gunplay and melee combat, looks pretty fun. There looks to be a bit of the Arkham games’ combat mechanics in here, with warnings about when to shoot the bad guys and combos that will have the squad taking down multiple enemies at once.

There’s very little emphasis on the dreaded collectible gear that drew comparisons to Destiny 2 and Anthem in previous showings of Kill the Justice League. Rocksteady doesn’t appear to have given up on the loot and upgrades for Suicide Squad’s characters, it just sounds like they’ll be addressed in a future video.
