Need iOS recommendations

Postby Isgrimnur » Thu Jul 05, 2012 4:25 pm

I've completed Cut the Rope and Experiments. It's probably the best of the iOS games that I've played. I'm working my way through the Disney Where's the Water, but it just doesn't grab me the way that CtR has.

So what games along the physics/puzzler vein does anyone suggest to bide my time until they release new boxes for my Om Nom?

These aren't physics based, but have you tried:
Trainyard
Helsing's Fire
Ghost Trick
World of Goo (I guess this one's sort of physicy)
Contre Jour (World of Gooish)
iBlast Moki (physics be here)

I freaking love Plague Inc. And for variations on the physics shooting and breaking stuff, I spent a lot of time on Amazing Breaker and Siege Hero.

I doubt this is what you are looking for Isgrimnur but in a Angry Birds vein I enjoyed Stupid Zombies. Does anyone have any recommendations for tbs, srpg, or rpg games? Ones I have tried and liked are Rimelands, Defender Chronicles, Battleheart (love this one), and Battle for Wesnoth.

Not in the physics vein, but one of the games I got hooked on most was Run Roo Run. Your goal in each level is to get your kangaroo from point A to point B while navigating a variety of obstacles. One tap starts your Roo running (she doesn't stop), and additional taps make her jump. That's it.

The levels are only one screen wide and last only 5 - 10 seconds each, but you will have to try many of them repeatedly to get your timing perfect. Not for the easily frustrated, but considering you beat Cut the Rope I imagine you don't have a problem replaying levels until you beat them. The game has a great progression, introducing new challenges and skills frequently to keep you hooked.

I despise Angry Birds. Maybe it's a defect on my part, but I find the difficulty level way too high. Like, yesterday I pulled down Seasons, and it took me probably 30 tries to even pass the third level, and that was with me just getting one star. For a game like that, I want quick satisfaction, not frustration.

At some point, I got Feed Me Oil for free, which is sort of a physics puzzler, with you using platforms and stuff to redirect liquid into a target receptacle.

Rebuild is an excellent turn-based zombie survival strategy game.

Similar to Cut the Rope:
Slice It
Burn the Rope (loved it)
iSlash (wood cutting - very cool)
Ice Breaker 1/2

Others not that similar, but physics based:

Crush the Castle and Siege Hero are superior to Angry Birds in every way, to me personally. And not just because I prefer the themes to....angry birds. Might want to check them out.

Osmos (though I have not tried this on iPhone, only iPad, but it is great)
Gears
Geared 1/2 (not the same franchise, but awesome game)
Paper Toss
Ragdoll Blaster 2 is hugely popular, never clicked with me

Water physics based:
Sprinkle (I liked this one)

You are not alone in despising the game. I don't find the difficulty that high, I just don't find the game the least bit entertaining. So far New Star Soccer is the only game that has captured my attention. Cut the Rope is actually #2 for me, but I didn't finish it.

Rebuild is indeed very good, but although you can play it for short intervals, I wouldn't really consider it a quick fix.

Thanks for the recommendations. Started with Trainyard. Seems kinda simple to start. I'll see if it holds my interest. As for the rest, I'll keep the list in reserve and see what hits/misses.

I saw an Experiments update, but it supposedly just added hidden stars and microtransaction "Superpowers". No new updates in the app store, and the DJ box is the last one available in the main game.

Some of my favorite iOS games to this point:

Super Crate Box - Very simple, very fun platformer.
Rebuild - Excellent zombie apocalypse TBS.
Zuma Revenge, Peggle, Plants vs Zombies - Classic PopCap games.
Fairway Solitaire - Very well done golf solitaire game.
Space Miner - Asteroids style gameplay modernized and with a fun story and ship upgrading mechanic. And a banjo soundtrack.
World of Goo
Osmos - Beautiful game that's mechanically similar to Katamari Dumachi in that you start off small and then absorb everything smaller than you until you're the largest. The challenge comes from the zero G physics and the fact that if you get too close to something larger than you, you'll be the one getting absorbed.
Swordigo - Well done platformer.
Sonic CD - An amazing port of a classic Sonic game. The other ports are just ROMs run on shitty emulators.
Sonic All-Star Racing - Is currently broken (always crashes on the fourth race of the second cup) but if Sega ever fixes it, it's a fantastic game.

Other mentions...

Civilization Revolutions - I have it but haven't put much time into it yet. Seems solid.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars - Same as above.
Grand Theft Auto 3 - Decent port, though the frame rate and controls aren't ideal. If you loved the game and it's on sale for a buck, you'll probably want to give it a shot.
NBA Jam - I've played a couple games with it and it's enjoyable.
Worms 2 - Takes a while to get used to the controls, but a decent port otherwise.
Wolfenstein 3D and Doom - I haven't bought Doom yet, but if it's as slick as Wolf3D then it's definitely worth picking up if you're a fan of the game.

Oh and as for the more casual physics game, I enjoyed that game where you protected the oranges from the acid rain or whatever. Forgot the name...

I just bought Squids: Wild West and it is a lot of fun. There is a an original Squids as well.

It's referred to as a mix between Final Fantasy Tactics and Angry Birds, and to some extent that is true. Each squid in your party has unique characteristics and powers. Movement and attacks are accomplished by pulling back on their tentacles and sling-shotting them where you want them to go. Each mission (of which there are many) will have you accomplishing certain goals such as killing all enemies, getting to a certain location, or accomplishing certain goals. In addition, each level has sub-goals such as "all squids must survive," finding a bonus star hidden in the level, or finishing the level in a certain number of turns. This adds an enormous amount of replayability as you try to ace each level. Pearls found in each level and by killing enemies can be used to level up squids or buy new accessories and items for them, so there is a heavy RPG element as well.

It's one of those games that is difficult to describe why it's fun, but once you play it you're hooked.

My favorites so far:
Space Miner - really great game
Quarrel DX - fun word game
Plants vs Zombies - tower defense variant
Kingdom Rush - tower defense
flight control HD
Harbor Master HD
Wheres My Water
Ticket to Ride Pocket edition (boardgame, fun for whole family)

Also, you really need to go to appshopper.com and set up an online account. You can tell it what apps you want and then when the price drops, you get an email instantly. I have been able to get 90% of my apps for free using this service. It's really great.
Now Playing:

If you own an iOS device and don't know what Jetpack Joyride is, you're not doing it right. And I find it hard to believe that it can be topped (for its genre at least). HERESY!

Although admittedly, the sheen of the game does wear off pretty quickly, as does any game based on endless levels, IMO.
